Free-Roaming?

B1ackMondayB1ackMonday Member Posts: 44

Please don't flame me if this has an obvious answer, but is Guild Wars free-roaming? I mean this in a sense like the EQ games, where you can just wander around the world freely and attack any monster you come across.

Thanks for any replies ::::20::

i would also like to know this, i just purchased the pre ordder, and saddly i purchased it 2 days after the last beta event... damn me. But another thing i would like to know is if it has different servers adn if you make games like you do on diablo 2, or if its just a huge open world like EQ or FFXI. Finaly the weapons what are they like, are the unique like UO or D2 where every item is different or are they like FFXI where you get a short sword and there is a short sword +1 with 1 extra damage??

Yes, you can wander. The majority of the PvE is free roaming, and the 25 storyline missions are fairly linear - BUT.. roaming around usually results in finishing the bonus portion, and gaining an extra thousand XP.

    1) Servers - As far as I know they're planning on just one server (well, one shard). However, since everything except the towns and outposts are instanced you get the world to yourself (or to just your group) if you so choose. Obviously you can still meet people and put together groups in outposts and towns.

    2) Weapons - It's both of what you said, really. The basic weapons are just .. Flat Bow 7-11 damage, then maybe you find one that's 8-12, 9-13, 9-14, 9-15, 10-15, etc..  but you can customize them with things like lightning damage, poison duration, etc. Also there are blue-labeled weapons with extra bonuses on them aside from that slight damage adjustment. 10% damage bonus while your hexed, for instance. Then there are rare and unique weapons as well.

Hopefully that answers your questions. =)

Ok thanks Slack, but are there any limits on how far you can wander?

Yes you are in one map at a time between towns while doing a main quest with additional/optional secondary quests.
People have said that single play up to lvl20 is more of a tutorial than "real action", any "beta-veterans" wanna expand on that? (Like there is a ton to do at lvl 20 but not that much up to lvl20).

think of the areas in GW more like instances than EQ type worlds, you can only adventure in ones aera at a time and there are only set ways inand out of them too

also the weapons are basic but there are a few rare elite weapons but these are not that awesome as the game is balanced toward player skill rather than lvl grinding and leet armour and weapons, a lvl 15 char can easly beat a lvl 20 char if he/she has the skill in playing the game rather than the best weapons

no there is tons to do up until lvl 20 but when you hit lvl 20 you are wmore or less ready to do anything, this is PVP really comesinto it's own. the game becomes more then quest taking and allows you to start to think about pvp or gvg battles and what skills you need for them and where to get those skills.

up unti recently therwe as not mauch high end conent in the betas but they recently added a huge amount more for igh and low end players, and it all runs on 1 server, us, euro and korean players all in 1 place, not too shabby huh?

you can sometimes roam many zones between towns and outposts.

I'm not *exactly* sure in what manner you  meant this, so I'll try to answer it as best as possible.

If I start in City A, find a duo partner, and enter the adjacent Map 1.. I can walk through the whole map and kill things, with no limits on where - aside from vertical-axis limits. There is no respawn. Once I find the clearly marked (via a sign) map 2, I can choose to go there or look for another zone to go into. Most maps have two others that they connect to. Sometimes it's one map between outposts, sometimes two or three. The zones, on the whole, are pretty large. Once you enter a new zone the one behind you spawns again, so if you re-enter it's populated and not "clear" like when you left it. You can travel from one end of the map to the other (with only one exception I can think of, and I'm not even sure about that) by foot, at any time and the quests you're given direct you in an advancing path across the map. However, just because you get a quest in Map X doesn't mean you have to go to map X that very moment.

I hope that answer suffices. If not, could you be a little more precise with the question? Just trying to help. =)

Oh, and contrary to what several people have said on this board.. if you like soloing (and you're GOOD at it) it's not very difficult. You can pull two or three out of any group, if you're patient. Sure it takes longer, but it should since there's only one person! ( I know this had nothing to do with the question asked, but you haven't mentioned groups or anything, so I figured I'd include this just in case you're the solo type. )

Yep, that's pretty much how the weapons are.

As for money.. people mostly sell crafting material, dye, armor modifications, weapon modifications, shields, and of course weapons themselves, since the farther along you get the better the drops. Gold drops as well. Obviously, you can get gold from selling things to players too.

As for stuff to buy from merchants (and other NPC's).. armor, a fee for customizing at the weaponsmith, salvage kits (for crafting materials, weapon upgrades), identification kits (for the non-common weapons), making a guild cape, starting a guild, etc.

Do you guys think the money will be based on money ( or gold or what ever the monatery currency is) or will it be items or what?

Yes !!! You can free rome, infact you can free roam through the game instead of doing the missions, thoguh i do not recomend this becasue you gain significant xp from missions, however you can take a huge short cut to the temple of ages by free roaming !!!

Free roaming is great in this game. When I'm waiting for a friend to come on so we can PVE or guild members to go on so we can Guild War or PVP, I usualy help people in the missions or roam around. Like some people said before, you can get from the start of the game to the end just roaming from town to town, youre not locked on that place. Sure the world is cut up into bits like you go through one place thne pass a portal-like thing that downloads the next area into your PC so it doesnt lag as much. But you can get anywhere in the game without really being stuck to the missions.

This by far is the greatest game I have ever played in my life. I have played in 3 of the betas and cant wait until it comes out. I posted some screen shots of my characters in the Guild Wars sshot area if you want to see.
