For a game that wants to support hundreads of caharacters on screen at the same time the characters details look amazing..

The art style of the environments is awesome, characters look a little to much asian style to me, but its the character annimations that makes this game world come alive.

Most people at the conventions where blown away by the graphics and the artstyle....  that must have some reason..

I've seen the first picture somewhere. It's pre-rendered.

The fact that they will be able to run on pretty much every computer that ran Guild Wars (1), I think the graphics are pretty astounding.  Mainly because of the artists, not the computer tech.

The character detail looks fine,  the enviro looks bland  (at least it does to me).  Way too much use in the lighting special effects, makes it look like a chinese game IMO.

I'm going to echo what a few others have said - water colour style looks lovely and really does provide a sense of depth, the artists are amazing so I'm sure there are going to be lots of breath taking scenes. I love attempts at graphic realism (AoC) but as long as the art style is good, which so far it is, I'll be happy.

I greatly prefer the art style used in GW1 over that shown in GW2, so far.  I find that I keep needing to remind myself that it is still in Alpha, things may get better.  I hope.

I like what I see but I only care about eye candy if it doesn't hinder game play.

Nothing kills a MMO like tech problems.

For example, AoC has the best character models and animations but that doesn't help me much when I ragequit in middle of a siege because I run at 10 FPS or crash every 10min...

Darkfall on the other hand, so so graphics but a higher end PC will run at 60 fps in a siege of 200+ players involved in a non-istanced world... no eye candy can beat that.

I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today.

    Looks okay.

It's not AoC, not by a long-shot, but it's serviceable.

Guild Wars 2 graphics is better than AoC graphics.

What everyone seems to be missing is that all the graphics we have seen come from demos. At those demos, ANet was more intrested in saying, "Look at all these awsome gameplay stuff", than, "Look at our awsome graphics". Yes the graphics are a bit cartoony, but that is the reason why it is not out yet, they are currently "touching it up". So I am going to reserve my judgment on the graphis for when they are completely done.

  • QuirhidQuirhid Member UncommonPosts: 6,230

The graphics have been recycled and enhanced. Leaves more time for polish and other stuff I guess. It was a slight disappointment when I first saw it but if the previous engine was fine, then it is fine. I must have been expecting something totally different. It looks functional. I hope the sparkle and the effects wont hog too much room in the screen since they do tend to get in the way and annoying after you've got used to them.

As long as the game plays smoothly (and I mean smoothly), I don't care about the graphics

Most my own friends turn down the graphics all the way in mmos because THEY DONT CARE ABOUT GRAPHICS. Gameplay is more important then shiny pixels.

No need to sacrifice either in this day and age :)

I like GW 2 design choices, hi rez all the way or the ability to turn everything up. Original GW's didn't have much options I hope 2 is different here.

I know this has been said before, but seriously who cares about graphics? It's way at the bottom of the list along with character custimization in terms of importance in an mmo.

You are confusing graphics and art.  AoCs polygon count is a lot higher so from a technical point of view is the graphics better.

On the other hand is GW2 already running smother at least 6 months before launch compared to AoC with 2 years out, so GW2s engine in itself is very well made.

Someone early on said that they seem to be sticking close to the actual artwork done for the game and I can see that in some of what I have looked at for the game. I can also agree that its nice to see them doing that. The artwork for this game is really just beautiful, Im probably going to end up caving and buying the artbook at some point. As for the in-game graphics though, its a little cartoony I'll give it that but graphics have never been a huge deal in my book. I just want whatever style the designers go with to be polished and done well in its own right. If the effects all act smoothly and seemlessly together using the graphical style they have chosen, thats way more important than a game that is hyper realistic but has odd clipping issues or effects that make you just feel an unrealistic disconnect from the game. So as long as they do what they've chosen to do, well, then I will probably be perfectly happy with how the game looks and just focus on playing it and making my own story.

Lol, i am looking forward to GW2 as much as the next person but to say that the graphics are better than AOC is going to far. Wait! let me meet you half way and say that AOC character models are the best i have seen in any mmorpg but the landscape and foiledge are not that good at all. I think LOTRO is the best scenery and landscape you will find in any MMO to date with Vanguard coming next. When it comes to realistic armour then Vanguard rules hands down, it looks very good if you have the PC to pump the graphics up to max.

I am quite attracted to the painterly graphics style they have chosen. It looks like an epic Frank Frazetta cover. Many game companies lean on graphic tech like a crutch because they don't want to pay for a modest staff of graphic artists. Sure lots of shiny etc, but many of those game worlds look souless and uninspiring.

    Archlinux ftw

Are they the best graphics  like FF14, AoC and crysis? No

Are they one of the most artistically, painterly out there? Yes

I dont care much about graphics but those are pretty cool to look at.

I was hoping for a bit more advancement in the graphics but seeing the gametype and PvP type they are doing it's understandable. The graphics are great for what it is and should be a well made game.

I must agree with some posters here when they say that the graphics are as good as they need to be. I've got a pretty decent rig, but I don't want to have to upgrade it just to play the game at high settings. It looks good enough. Whats most important to me is its art and animation. Thats what is really going to keep people. Graphics only take you so far when the art or animation sucks. So far, I am perfectly satisfied with the art. Some of the animations need work though, but very little. The cool thing about minor changes in animations is that its not hard to do when you already have the art models completed. So I"m not worried.

I have to agree with rbc, just because Im tired of constantly having to wait for the required specs on each new game and hoping that my PC is up-to-date enough to run it. A clean looking game without mind blowing graphics is fine by me as long as it is fun to play. And its the same when I think about my friends playing it. We're a bunch of college kids, money isn't something we are exactly flush with, so its nice to know we probably wont have to do major upgrades to handle GW2 [the lack of a monthly sub is an extra bonus].

Also rbc I loved the Night Angel Trilogy. Hah

Haha. Glad somebody recognized the quote. Durzo is probably the coolest and yet, deepest character I've seen in a very long time. The Night Angel Trilogy is in my top 3 favorites in book series so far. Whoever likes a good fantasy series needs to chew on that one for a while.

But yeah, GW2's graphics are good enough. Its the game's art that will make it shine amongst the rest.

Hm...I enjoyed GW1 (a lot) but the plans re graphics of GW are perhaps the only thing that could turn me off the game.  I'm confident in Anet's ability to release a quality product without too many bugs.

From the preview vids, the graphics look to be of very high technical quality, but the artistic style is not really to my tatse.

I mean.....personally I'm happy with the animations for necro and ele, but find that too much when looking at warriors and rangers - to me it feels overdone.

I guess I just prefer low fantasy to high fantasy. Re the races, it's similar - I have a feeling that I may end up preferring the "humans only" set up of GW1 to seeing Asura, Charr etc. also looking for groups.

That said, I still plan to get a CE when the game starts and play a mesmer (again), assuming that the class is in the game (which I'm pretty sure it will be).

I guess I'll suck it and see, but am cautiously optimistic.
