What is keeping this game alive?

MentatMentat Member UncommonPosts: 516

I had some friends playing this game hard core for a while till WoW came out. What is keeping this game alive I wonder? The only thing I can think is the name "Star Wars". I would love to play in a star wars universe but, this one doesn't seem like it. So, what appeal does this game have?

The only reason i like it is becas the
killing. If any role playing, action,or anything
else doesn't,game's would just plain suck!

i'd have to agree with the original poster, it's just cashing in on a liscence, the game isn't that good.

I'd have agreed with you a year ago, that SOE was just cashing in on a franchised name.

The game has always had the best crafting system I've ever seen, but it was definitely lacking in the non graphics and sounds department.

Now I play a game that has gone from "hey its fun to play in the Star Wars Universe" to "hey this game is a lot of fun to play".

For me, an mmorpg is worthless without faction conflict as a large part of the backing story. Sadly for SWG, thats all the conflict was up until earlier this year - part of the backdrop of the story. Today, there is actually an ongoing conflict between the Rebel faction, and the Imperial faction. Each planet is controled by either faction, depending on who has more bases placed on said planet. Want to take back Naboo? Place some bases down. Still behind? Get a raiding party together, and hit enemy bases when they are vulnerable.

Finally, what we do in this game has an impact beyond being told our actions have an impact.

What else does this game have to offer? Great roleplaying. This IS a great universe to create a character in, and you can roleplay without having to brush up on your old English (well, maybe some malt liqour......). I don't even feel that you need a great grasp of the universe in order to roleplay, just a great grasp of who your character is. Granted, roleplaying experiences can differ greatly from server to server, but I've found this game to be very fulfilling in this respect.

As far as the knocks on this game, the greatest one has to be how unbalanced the combat classes are. They ARE coming out very soon with the combat upgrade (maybe you've seen it refered to as the CU), but at this moment, the PvP is still out of whack.

I played this game from release for nearly a year before quitting. There was no game-driven content, and all the players who were supposed to be driving the content were Hologrinding during the holofiasco, as I've come to call it.

I came back to it at the end of January/beginning of February this year, and was taken aback by the insane amount of content added. Missions that string together to form a story arc have been placed around the universe. The GCW (Galactic Civil War) has been made to mean something.

On top of these improvements, I found most of the bugs that made the game too annoying to play FIXED. I found the new dev team furiously adding content and features that make SWG BETTER, and not break it even more.

Now I haven't even mentioned Jump to Lightspeed, which is so different than the ground game, its like playing a totally different game. What a great way to not feel the grind: A story driven journey to Ace Pilot, that isn't even close to easy to get through. I can now take a break from the ground game with a different game, and STILL help my character on the ground. Not to mention that the space game itself, is tons of fun.

That's my take on the game, at least my take in 15 minutes. Of course, the CU (combat upgrade) is still pending, so everyone is holding their final judgements on SWG for now. The CU will most certainly make or break this game. If it deliver what it promises: An engaging, fun, star wars feeling, and BALANCED combat system; then SWG will thrive for years to come.

If it falls short, expect to see SWG closed by Christmas.

Based on what I've seen from this new dev team and structure, if I were a betting man, I'd bet the house that I'll be playing SWG this time next year.

Either that, or I'll be homeless::::15::!

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

    1) Fans....mostly that's it....

I'm not complaining i love it for what it is....but it's sort of anyones guess with the new expansion, The only thing i find at fault(with all the flaming) is the level based damage

Which honestly....I PRAY that they will improve or remove altogether...

Since it is after all the ONLY MMORPG I play (as i've stressed to the limit)  ITS FUN ITS ADVENTUROUS

ITS SUSPENSEFUL ITS FRIENDLY(people...not the enemyimage) but it IS a coin toss with this...i love the idea of cybernetic parts though thats bout it

I have to say i played it when it first came out for a year and I loved it. It was wonderfull. But i thought the expansion really messed it up.

Sound!? *curses* Most of the sound for the game is taken from the Episode 5 sound track (if you dont believe me, acquire it and you'll find that the login screen is entitled 'the rebel fleet' and is the last track). All of the music is written by john williams who is an excellent and world renound composer :P Try again mate.

err ?? Which expansion ? Jump to Lightspeed ? The space expansion has little cross links to the ground game ... seperate skill points, parts easy to aquire, money making in space only to pay for space parts perfectly possible. How did it mess up the game ?

The hologrind for Jedi in 2004 ruined the game for a while, because it forced people to do things they hated .. and it burned them out and made them bitter. That has changed and the game in 2005 has VERY MUCH improved.

Or did you mean the new expansion Rage of the Wookiees ? How does adding 100 quests and one planet and space mining mess up the game ?

    Have fun

I have been playing this game almost from the start. Been through a lot of things and changes in the game. But it never get to the same of excitement as I had in the beginning. It became very boring. The only thing that kept me ingame was the guild I was in. And that was one of the strong parts of SWG I think, the community. Something you kinda miss in WoW. The reason for that is that there isn't really any roleplay possibilities.
Example: not been able to build your own house, or make a town with the guild. etc.

I must say I am thinking going to play SWG again, but mainly because of the guild I was in. Not because of the CU, just don't have any faith in it. Sony never gave a reason for that.
