When I first heard about the idea of GW2 more than a year ago....I was excited because I thought I heard the game would have faction conflict(between players) in a persistent world pve/rvr world.I also assumed there would be open field warfare. As time passed I thought I read that almost all of these things were NOT in this game.So...I lost interest and have not kept up with the game. So...I ask.....is this a pve game only...is there player vs player faction conflict(i don't mean duels or arena fights) ? Would someone please educate me.Thanks in advance.

Well, there are server vs. server fights that last something of a week long. In the actual lore, the different factions kind of, work together, to defeat a greater evil.
Maybe I haven't been following this game as closely as I thought I was, but I don't recall ever hearing that any of that was going to be in this game......
There will be server vs. server warfare in a realm called "The Mists." From what I understand three servers will be punted against each other. There's really not much in-depth information available on PvP at this point.
It's definitely not a PvE only game. GW1 was a PvP game from the ground up and I expect no different from GW2. True, only a lot of PvE informaiton has been released at this point, but that's because Anet is working hard to make things implemented, not only planned perfectly for PvP before they start releasing details and making promises.
There's two types of PvP: Structured PvP and WvW.
Structured PvP is similar to PvP in the first game. Everyone is of equal level, has the same access to gear, and numbers are equal. So far there are two annouced sub-types:
Guild versus Guild matches - Two guild teams of equal size fighting it out on an objective map.
Hot Joinable - PvP teams of equal size fighting it out, similar to fps servers where the teams are almost always balanced but people can join/leave at any time.
WvW is three Servers or Worlds/'Shards' fighting it out for resources, caravans, keeps, etc. in a week long battle. This includes unequal numbers of players among servers, differing player levels, and different gear from PvE. After making your character and going through the basic tutorial, you can level up solely by playing WvW. The devs have said that they have drawn inspiration from DAoC's PvP in this area.
the proper question is, how close the DAoC is to gw2 xD

Player versus Player
There will be two types of PvP available in Guild Wars 2; World PvP and Structured PvP.
World versus World
From Guild Wars 2 Wiki
World versus World (Also known as WvW, World PvP, and Casual PvP) is a mode of Player versus Player combat which takes place in the Mists. Worlds, or servers, are randomly matched up against two other worlds. Those match-ups will be rotated every week to match worlds against those of similar strength. The combat is open and features many objectives and roles which players can do; "players may decide to fight alone against a supply caravan, join a single group and capture a mine or create a large alliance to assault one of the numerous fortress that could give an advantage in the zone." The battle is on a large scale, where hundreds of people can fight on each side in week-long battles.
Each opposing world starts out with castles, mercenary camps, mines, lumber mills and villages. Separating the starting zones are neutral zones controlled by no one, also containing fortresses, mines, and villages.
The resources gained from mines and lumber mills are used to rebuild walls, create siege engines, and generally defend the team's fortress.
These territories and control points will confer benefits to the world that controls them; "maybe everyone gets increased energy regeneration or healing rate or enhanced loot drop rate." Players can gain experience and level their character in World PvP. Guilds will be able to take and hold keeps.[1]
Players are free to come and go from the battle as they please and there is no limit to the number of players entering. Players enter with a character of any level and use skills they have available to that character. Characters can enter as a sidekick which will allow them to play as a higher level character.
World PvP is intended as a casual form of PvP, designed to be a more relaxed bridging point between PvE and the tactics and pressure of structured PvP. It is hoped that players of any level or PvP experience can participate and be useful.
Structured PvP
Structured PvP is similar to today's GvG. It will allow you to enter the game at maximum level with all skills, races, items and classes automatically unlocked.

In terms of PvP or RvR.....
DAoC was revolutionary because of its hardcore system of RvR, basically if you ran out into the RvR zone as a caster not knowing what you are doing, you would be one shot and be dead before you even know whats going on... Even with a group of 50 noobs, you would get destroyed by a solid 8-man group... There was a monsterious learning curve.
When you had a high level 8-man group roaming, they could essentially kill an entire zerg of 100 noobs with ease, this was done with long term Crowd Control spells and if you didn't know what you were doing, you would sit there and die like sheep. The long term Crowd Control was revolutionary with the ability of "Person Based Area of Effect" spells that would kill large masses of people at the same time. This way of RvR or PvP was great if you took your time looking for a good group and get set up, because with a solid group you could roam for hours without dying. The good teams stood out and became legendary across servers with their style of destroying huge numbers of enemies.
Nowadays, the average player hates this way of doing things b/c once they see the enemy, they are basically frozen and unable to do anything until the enemy stands right next to them and then procedes to kill them in about 2 seconds, and you would be unable to even cast a single spell. So, I would guarantee this game is WAAAAAAY different, b/c the cry babies would be way to loud for the Dev Team to deal with if they go the way of Hardcore PvP like DAoC. But, for each great group, there are hundreds of crying noobs getting owned, these sheep had a loud voice and buying power, so the devs don't want them to get destroyed in PvP endlessly and quit their game, so they make it more carebear... it's pretty simple...
Just like EQ, you die, you lose everything, want it back? go way into that dungeon and find it within 24hours or all your gear is gone.... WAAAY to much crying from the carebears now for devs to be hardcore like they were back in the day...
It's easy to make a hardcore PvP game, long range Crowd Control Spells, and ability to do massive damage quickly... and the most skilled/well geared group dominates... if it takes forever to kill enemies and you have no CC, then it's more like fight for 10 minutes and whoever has the most people win no matter how skilled or geared you are...
Personally, I would love a DAoC2, I loved the hardcore way of doing things, but I just dont see it happening.... just to many carebears from games like WoW.... old school ftw
Don't get me wrong though, I like the Arena type thing in GW2, which should be pretty cool with a good group, but if they did arena in DAoC, the fight would probably last like 30 seconds and one side would be dead, so I'm pretty sure the fights are going to last a lot longer and that means in Open World PvP it's harder to kill someone, which means, if you have more people, you win, which means zerg, zerg, zerg... which will not work, to get good Open World PvP going, you need to be able to take on larger groups with skill. If not, then alls people will do, will be to zerg...
here is a short answer:
Nothing compared in pve
PvP... well everyone knows about WvWvW right?
Its way closer to DAoC PvP then you'd think, because in this game its also all about being in controll with your CC spells.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Guild wars 2 only needs to get someone to buy the game in the end, if some noob can't win in high end pvp, arenanet won't give a damn. It's always taken dedication to be the best in pvp in guild wars. However, stun lock builds aren't skill and are nooby in themselves, so don't expect them at all. However you can expect a good 5 man team to hold their own against a swarm of noobs. Hell, a 4 man team in alliance battles can take a whole enemy force in gw1 with good players
I hope you are right, but I don't think stun locks are noobish, in controlling a crowd over 10 times your size, if you don't have control over them, there is no way you can take them down. I would like to see a group taking on 10times their size without any form of Crowd Control in GW, Post Video if you got it though..... And I doubt that in GW you are able to take down the huge size forces you can in DAoC with a high end group. Personally, I hate zergs, and I want to be able to take down huge zergs of noobs with a highly skilled group.
video is 8 vs huge zergs, up to 56... I would like to see that in GW... post videos of GW if you have it
