Good PvE game similar to WoW? F2P

TrojanLordTrojanLord Member Posts: 26

I tried WoW a while back and loved it. I liked the feeling of building up my character and all the different items. Loads of quests, some very good and in depth ones. Liked the giant world, the big cities, the feeling of it. Lots of things to do, places to go, quests complete and monsters to kill.

If I could, I would play WoW, but I'm not able to play a P2P game.  I need either a f2p-game or a one-time purchase (like Guild Wars).

I've looked a bit around, and Lord of the Rings sounds like the best option, but it doesn't seem like F2P is out yet, and it looks like the free play will be very limited.

I've tried some WoW-clones, like RoM, but it just didn't have the same smooth feel to it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Going from wow to another mmo is the same as going from a ferrari to an old skateboard...

Playing other similar games makes you feel they are made by half brain monkeys..the animations suck, the sounds suck, the overall polish and feel of the gameplay suck...

By saying this i mean: if you really enjoyed wow and know what a quality game feels..then its hard to find another...

I advise you to try some other mmo that doesnt look similar to wow, even if they all suck..you will not compare it to wow..because its a different type of mmo...

Exemples: Darkfall, Mortal online, fallen earth etc etc.

I feel for you, and i wish i could help you more, GW is not bad. WoW is the undisputed champion regardless of what some people might say. I've tried many, and i mean many, f2p. You are as out of luck as i am. If theres a f2p as good as WoW it would be as known, and have the numbers to boast. I wish you luck, and perhaps another poster can help you more. GW is a solid alternative IMHO.

LOTR is done nicely and is the 3rd most played MMO to date.. and rising.. You can play it for free all the wall through if you grind turbine points right... IT is possible.. LOTR is even a good game for a sub, though only did this to make more money the game wa  s not in  trouble or anything..

Far as ROM thats not really F2P  you spend more than 15 bucks to get anything out of the game once u get up in levels or plan on any PVP or raiding... These F2P games are ajoke, only F2p games I would touch would be LOTR or DDO, maybe  crimecraft...

    @Besttheiswow

I understand. It sure seems that way ):

Also, all the games you listed as examples are p2p games, but thank you.

Is there any good PvE content in GW? I thought it was mainly PvP based. I might look into GW2 when it's released.

    @Darkcrystal

LOTR does look like a nice game, but getting all the points to unlock everything would require several characters on several servers. Putting in a lot of effort to play the game isn't very appealing. Thanks for your input.

As you said, LotRO is probably the game you are looking for. It's a better PVE experience than WoW in my opinion (at least it was as a p2p title). Personally I cancelled my subscription when they announced it was going f2p, so I can't say what it's like now, but as far as I know you can play it already. You just have to create a US account if you don't want to wait for Codemasters to change the EU version to F2P.

    Free to play?

You should wait for Gw2 or Vindictus.

Im going to play ffxiv till Gw2 comes out.

And who knows i may  play both of them :)

    Also try Allods Online

"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

Your not going to find a F2P with the quality of WOW. They do not exist.

WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

Try something with a completely different style. In spite of all the hate I have for the latest turn Atlantica Online has taken, the before lvl 100 game is still breathtaking.

It's a turn-based MMO, F2P. You can use automove to get to your quest giver or to the mobs, or to the nearest town. Before lvl 50 you get free scrolls every half hour. Once you hit about 96 or so, the game changes, but that's another story:)

Right now they're having a recruit-a-friend drive, so you can talk someone into helping you out with gear in return for using their friend code:)

Basically, the newbie experience was always good, and they've recently buffed it even further, along with graphics upgrades to starter areas. Its the end game that took a serious beating--

*edit* Forgot to mention, you have up to 8 mercenary NPCs that quest with you. You can change them out, pick their skills/gear etc. Parties max at 3 people, 27 mercs. Until the recent Troy update, adding Main only dungeons....

    Lord of the Rings Online

    Except better in design...

I'd say Allods but the EU population, at least, is almost dead and the cash shop really is a massive moneysink.

LOTRO; if you want everything for free then firstly a) not gonna happen and b) LOTRO has reasonably-priced stuff...and you can still subscribe. If you're not willing to work for stuff in a f2p game then quite frankly you shouldn't be playing one unless you have a large wallet.

RIFT was a *crushing* disappointment; a shallow, loveless, generic MMO the likes of which hasn't been seen in a P2P format since, well, forever.

Eagerly awaiting: World of Darkness, ArcheAge.
