The official Arena.Net Guild Wars 2 blog has been updated. This time Kristen Perry shows off the dye system that will be employed in the game. Perry discusses changes in the dye system as compared to the original Guild Wars and starts the blog off with a bang: There will be no more mixing as there won't need to be with over 400 colors available. And in a most interesting twist, players will 'unlock' colors to be able to use them. No more storage problems!
Colors will be unlocked, not muled.
Storage was always a factor when it came to dye colors in Guild Wars. The new system would cripple most inventories if we required characters to lug all the dyes around. Fear not! The dye hues themselves will be unlockable through various means, both in-game and out. Once you unlock the color, it will be available across your entire account, not just the individual character.
Colors are sortable by hue, temperature, or materials.
Because players enjoy a lot of freedom with customization, we tried to offer greater choices in organization for the dye UI. In the hue sorting option, the colors will be displayed in typical neutrals and rainbow breakdown and will also include designer category sets such as the midnight hues, jewel-tones, and more. The temperature sorting option keeps the tones divided into warm, cool, and neutral tones. The material sorting option organizes them into cloth, leather and metal groups. Again, just because it has an affinity for a material, that doesn’t mean it’s restricted. You can definitely place all colors on to any material; the colors will just change to suit the material.
We know sometimes it would be nice to have ready access to the hues, so we’re creating a “favorites” area in the dye UI so you can hold a working palette of your choice.

Anet never ceases to impress.
finaly a company who actually seeing that customizing is PART on an MMORPG.
Karma to ANET for this one.
to reply to my own post.......its been since UO that i have seen this simple yet so fine option in a game
Like i say'd Karma for ANET.
As much as I hate to admit it, dyes are one thing I've been missing in most MMO's since UO. That on top of social clothing. I know, I know, it's fluff.... but I've come to accept that I enjoy certain amounts of fluff. It's something I came to realize after many MMO's that came after UO. I miss my house, my social clothing, diversity in my pets, etc. I even miss sitting down in game with an old friend and playing a game of chess lol.
Anet did a good job with social clothing in GW especially in conjunction with the dyes and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do in GW2. The dye aspect looks to be a good start. Now heres to hoping for some social clothing that will fit over your armor.
On a side note we found practical uses for the dyed social clothing in UO.... it let guilds come up with guild colors and uniforms to make it easier to identify each other on the battlefield.
why aren't there more developers who know what gamers want?
I am glad that dye sytem is expanded so much over original. Best news is that dye doesn't take space in inventory anymore.
And we finally got to see some Norn clothic.
That's a great practical application.
I foresee great opportunity for this same system in the World vs World PvP, where massive scale warfare will be common.

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Now I know how they are going to fund this game. Selling some 400 dye colors!.LOL
Not that I care, just pointing out the part of the article that states you can " unlock" dye colors in and OUT of the game.
Okay, i think its wonderfull how they remove a favourite feauture from the orriginal guildwars game and by being honest about their reasoning turn the replacing feature in a hot item....
Now thats marketing ...
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
It will propably work like unlock packs in GW1 which isn't too bad to be honest.
I love those armours. Look interesting and functional. =3
Yep more than likely it'll be like skill packs in gw1 but far less useful and even that wasn't particularily useful. I mean it's account wide and it's been hinted at to not be particular difficult to acquire. I mean whose going to be dumb enough to buy such a thing.
Well it's been confirmed there will be some rare dye packs so it might take you some time to get all of them (like true black will be hard to acquire) so people wanting all colors from lvl 1 will buy it.
actually the long hair for male is what got me most interested, Finally

Because in general Developers aren't Gamers much anymore. Their blood does not run with that special something the old Devs had back when Devs were Players as well as Devs.
For that matter many of the Players have changed as well. We can't go home again.
Back to topic... apparently a few of the surviving dinosaur Devs found their way to the lost valley at Anet, and congrats to Anet for keeping them. Very good dye system indeed. Thanks Anet
On a side note to Anet... your product is beginning to look top notch... no I won't fall to the hype but I am seeing promise... no GW2 isn't a sandbox MMO... but it great to see a Publishing House make a product that actually WORKS and so far seems to fit the bill for so many Players. Take as long as you need to get GW2 done right and you will have my coin.
I am the Player that wonders... "What the %#*& just happened?!"
