Top 3 past PvP games IMHO:
1. Shadowbane
2. NwN
3. Diablo2
I have been playing shadowbane for 2+ years and until some recent lag issues, loss of player base, and horrible patches implemented into the game, I was VERY happy with the PvP. I am now searching for the next PvP game (preferably in a fantasy setting, medieval or not).
The down time till the next game means ill be playing RL and saving for a new computer so I can buy a new pvp game and play it without having to cry.
Upcomming Pvp games:
Dark and Light
.. not sure what else is out there plz fill me in.

Darkfall seems like the best bet, if you like shadowbane. The release dates have been pushed back a lot though and people think it's vaporware.
Seems like theres nothing for PvP'ers atm
My personal top three games of the past:
1. DSO (cause I played it for years)
2. NWN (The original on AOL, cause it was the most awesomess PvP game ever, where PvP was actually a bug!)
3. Ultima Online (In the first 6 or so months.)
Upcoming games that may look to be interesting would be:
1. I'd have to say that GuildWar "might" be promising.
2. Dark and Light looks to be "ok".
3. The new Age of Conan may have alot of PvP value into it, but it is too early to tell.
Edit: Ultima Online is spelled Ultima Online, not "Ultime Online".

Current/past
1. eve online
2. uo (pre UO:R)
3. shadowbane
upcoming:
1. dakrfall
2. dark and light
3. not sure
You consider Diablo 2 to be one of the best PVP games ever? Its easily one of the worst hack/gank fests ever.
I tihnk UO is one of the best, upcoming i'd have to say Dark and Light and Guildwars.
If you count FPSs (since it just says PVP games) then Counter-Strike, UT2K4 or Quake 3.
Current/Past
1. Ultima Online pre UO:R
2. Shadowbane
3. Planetside
Upcoming
1. Darkfall - looks awesome
2. Guild Wars

Well I have played alot of games that have had pvp in it but I never have really pvped. Like I played EQ for 3 years on and off only becuase I was young so I never got alot of play time. and I never pvped. But now I play WoW and I love the pvp in that, only thing I don't like are how say a pally and warrior are fighting and unless the warrior has a priest theres no way for him to win, becasue all a paladin has to do is Shield, heal heal heal, fight fight fight, shield, heal heal heal, and gank. so its not fair to me as a warrior. But any ways.
My line up in no specific order of best.
WoW
Shadow bane
DAoC
I loved PvPing in DAoC, I think that was the first game that I really sat down and really pvped. and I did alittl bit of pvping in SB but that was mostly my friend cause he uses my accoutn and now I play like i said WoW.

Keep the game names commin! Im looking at all the suggestions (except GW.. Pretty gfx, horrible depth value, no staying power atm)
My idea of a good pvp game is one that:
1. Allows the end user to select wether he feels like pvping or not by entering zones that pvp is allowed in.
a) Lower zones should be made for lower characters.
b) They should have lower lvl gold/in game currency drops, and sparse magicical item drops.
c) Higher zones drop better equipment and gold but the price for being in these zones is the chance that someone might kill you.
2. The end user has something to lose thus upping the stakes and making the game more exciting.
a) If you "Own" something in the game world such as a building, city, or piece of the map you should have to fight to keep the ownership current. This also makes the game have more real concicoinces for actions in and out of game. (Board Warriors beware)
b) In some High Level zones make not only xp penalties for dying, but also whoever killed you able to cash in on the kill and take a bit of money. Ultra cocky players could enter the zone with thousands of gold on them or a deed of their in game property on them just to taunt pvp. Learning characters can enter the zone with less just to get their feet wet and possibly earn some cash/deeds.
c) Make the same High Level zones a breeding ground for would be bounty hunters. Allow one or more players to place bounties on the heads of whom they choose. Possibly someone who has killed them in the past, or robbed them, or commited some other offense.
3. Would keep a recorded history of who you have killed, how many times, what level difference there was and somehow score the best pvper on the server, as well as rate them on some sort of 1-10 scale for Griefer vs Solid Pvper. This would be sure to keep people comming back, climbing the ladder of players to strive to be the best. There would be a bit more of a clear definition of who is "the best" and who is just an outright lying board whore. It would be impossible to not get wrapped up in the race to be the best. Good competition would be so simple in a game like this.
a) As part of this system, where ever you go, what ever you do, you carry that numerical representation of your pvp standing and wether you lowbie grief or truely PvP. If someone wants to /who you, they can see "Oh, this person is 15 levels lower than me and is only ranked 450/7000 and I'm ranked 6300/7000." At this point it will be up to the superior player to move on and find someone more at his level in order to get a good fight, and possibly raise his score. Otherwise his ranking will drop due to the level difference and his pvp rating would shift towards "Griefer". For some this would be a great way to curb lowbie griefing, and arguably un-necessary behavior.
b) At the same time If a player decides to kill the lower guy his ranking will suffer and his standing as a solid pvper would also suffer. If a character were to do this too often it would be blatently apparent to everyone that he enjoys killing people lower level and needs to be punished for his actions. Npcs in game could charge more for items, repairs and services to those who choose to have a higher "griefer" rating, while other players can choose to place bounties, attempt to destroy assets, and intentionally go looking for a fight with said "griefer".
4. Allows the end user to choose the path of the crafter. Like any other MMO there is a suprisingly large audience for this sort of thing. Even some that like to PVP or PVE they need a change of pace and the ability to create things in game as well as destroy them. These crafters would fuel the economy, and be able to create highly sought after items, as well as open the door for more quickly equiping the players who want to pvp and pve.
Combined with a balanced skill/discipline/race mix and good graphics, this game could draw in droves of pvp lovers and a good number of non-pvpers who are looking for a very dynamic gaming experience.

Past, I'd say (no particular order) Shadowbane, Asheron's Call 1 (Darktide), and probably Eve Online. My guess is UO belongs in there too, but I've never played it so I can't say.
Upcoming? Guild Wars, maybe... I guess that's sort of a pvp game, even though it's basically just one arena fight after another.
Darkfall, for sure. The only game I am sure of that'll be full pvp that's in production.
Hero's Journey said they'd have a full pvp server.
Um... Kinda stretching here... Heard Roma Victor might have full or close to full pvp.
Why would anyone have DnL on a list of best upcoming pvp games though? It's just another carebear RvR game.

As its been said, Shadowbane and DAOC rank high on the past/current PvP MMOs out there.
Future? I'm keeping my eyes firmly glued to CoV and Auto Assault. Let's face it, PvP in the fantasy setting has had its time to show up for the party, and for the most part has failed miserably. PvP is supposed to be about action packed, adreneline pumping forays into beating the snot out of other people. The way I see it, the faster the gameplay (which CoH is, and AA is lining up to be), the better.
Current/Past (from the games I've played):-
1/ AC - Darktide
2/ DaoC
3/ Planetside
Future:-
1/ Darkfall
2/ Dark & Light
3/ Guild Wars
