BEIJING (Reuters) - A Shanghai online game player stabbed to death a competitor who sold his cyber-sword, the China Daily said Wednesday, creating a dilemma in China where no law exists for the ownership of virtual weapons.
Qiu Chengwei, 41, stabbed competitor Zhu Caoyuan repeatedly in the chest after he was told Zhu had sold his "dragon saber," used in the popular online game, "Legend of Mir 3," the newspaper said a Shanghai court was told Tuesday.
"Legend of Mir 3" features heroes and villains, sorcerers and warriors, many of whom wield enormous swords.
Qiu and a friend jointly won their weapon last February, and lent it to Zhu who then sold it for 7,200 yuan (US$870), the newspaper said.
Qui went to the police to report the "theft" but was told the weapon was not real property protected by law.
"Zhu promised to hand over the cash but an angry Qui lost patience and attacked Zhu at his home, stabbing him in the left chest with great force and killing him," the court was told.
The newspaper did not specify the charge against Qiu but said he had given himself up to police and already pleaded guilty to "intentional injury."
No verdict has been announced.
More and more online gamers were seeking justice through the courts over stolen weapons and credits, the newspaper said.
"The armor and swords in games should be deemed as private property as players have to spend money and time for them," Wang Zongyu, an associate law professor at Beijing's Renmin University of China, was quoted as saying.
But other experts are calling for caution. "The 'assets' of one player could mean nothing to others as they are by nature just data created by game providers," a lawyer for a Shanghai-based Internet game company was quoted as saying

I exaggerated a bit... terribly sorry if I offended any asians in the crowd. But there is documented and factual evidence that asian society is a LOT more combatative over RPG's than europe and america...

Yes if you look up the results of the last few olympics you will see that China really sux at sport. Assuming you measure it by them getting worse the more medals they win....

Ping pong is not a sport. Gymnastics is not a sport. Badminton is not a sport. Shooting is not a sport. Trampoline is not a sport. Okay, you got me. So they are good at various random activities. I'm part Asian, but thank god I've got some Irish/German/Scottish in me, otherwise I would probably never have played sports. But I'd be insanely smart.

No I'm stating a fact: Violence over arcade and online games is not that uncommon in Asia (noteably Korea). There was recently an article in a major rag about it. I don't remember which one or I'd give you the title. I just happened to stumble across it.
When I read it I didn't believe it. But you can google for violence related to online games and there is tons of stuff about it going on in Asia. Evidently it's a problem akin to our gang problem in the US. Pretty sad.
And no, I don't think we're better... I just wonder about the sanity of people who are willing to maim or kill over a **video game**.
And you are absolutely right. The USA has the highest murder rate in the western world.

Played EQ so much that he gave himself Migranes... which caused him to have trouble sleeping... so he slept during the day (missing work) and, instead of resting at night so he could go to work the next day when the migrane was gone... he'd get back on EQ
Vicious cycle... and sad... eventually he got fired and I kicked him out of the apt. since he couldn't pay his half of the rent.

However before I do this I wanted to state why I am locking this thread.
Some of the posts can be construed as offensive to other members here. Remember not to concentrate on the faults of one race or nationality because 1000 more people can point out faults of your own race and nationality. This will result in a completely useless thread of attacks across the fence (as it pretty much has become).
The truth of the matter is the internet and internet gaming has pretty much merged us all together. You cannot localize faults or even generalize faults to a certain race because in mmorpgs all races merge and we all do the same exact thing.
Griefing, PKing, immature smack talk, mmorpg romances, mmorpg suicides, mmorpg addictions, mmorpg related negligent man slaughter can happen to anyone who is not mentally well, regardless of race, creed, color, sex, religion, politics, etc.
No one race or nationality is more "radical" than the other in mmorpg gaming or internet communications. On the internet we all become "just humans" were anyone can make a cruel remark or act.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
