Final Fantasy XIV: Eorzea Preview

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Now that Final Fantasy XIV has officially launched, MMORPG.com's Carolyn Koh has a first hand preview of Eorzea. In this comprehensive look at the new game world, Carolyn covers basic information about races, classes, the armory system, combat, harvesting, crafting, questing, travel and something called "old school gameplay". Check out Carolyn's impressions of her first day in her Eorzea preview.

The realm of Eorzea is a vast land comprising Aldernard and its outlying islands, and it is a land divided, with wars waged in the names of the gods and goddesses. Although an uneasy peace now holds most of the land, the pantheon of the Twelve is worshipped devoutly by most and memories are long. Three strong cities have risen; the thalassocracy of Limsa Lominsa, a marine city-state made up of tiny islands connected by sturdy bridges, the forest nation of Gridania with its dense woodlands and labyrinthine waterways, and the bustling commercial sultanate of Ul’dah with its towering fortifications. You, young adventurer, what will you do? Which city will you call home? Will you explore in peace or will you wage war in the name of your god?

    Fair review -

A tip on character creation. During your 30 day "trial" you are allowed to create more than one character for free. Just have to remember to delete the characters you do not want before trial ends. Otherwise your Crysta balance may shrink beyond your intentions.

you dont really need another character in this game , kinda like FFXI had a  job system where you could play all the classes with 1 toon , FF14 is kinda the same you can switch classes as you need .

simple weapon/tool switch does it in FF14

some people like to roleplay and creat different characters with different looks, race different story  instead of being limited to 1 character, race, look with multiple personalities

Yeah, the ability to have one toon switch between classes is a oor excuse to limit the game in a stupid way. Its like a kick in the shins imo. Oh well.

I prefer the 1 character system because it helps to control the levels of asshattery when a person is bound to 1 character.

People develop a reputation and that reputation tends to stick. You can't hide behind alts.

  • miconamicona Member UncommonPosts: 677

believe me i love alts , just saying no need to spend extra money if you wanna try different class routes .

plus if i remember right when i was cooking in FFXI i was lacking storage at some point so just a mule is useful for that too .

plus 1$ isnt that much anyways if you really like the game your playing .

Wow, this is a way different game than I expected. Even from their last MMO they have changed a lot of things.

The learning curve is super steep as they have their own way of doing everything. Most MMOs you can jump into but this one you actually have to learn how to play the game. Which means you have to read the text. Hell even figuring out how to talk to npcs was hard to figure out. There are so many options you are sure to be overwelmed.

The game is so beautiful. It appears to mostly seamless too which is really nice.

My biggest issue with the game is lag lag lag. Everything lags. You walk into a building and nobody is there. You stand around and wait and wait and wait and then NPCs start slowly appearing and then bang all the other players show up. The feel of the game is kind of clunky and slow in way that turns out to be kinda of boring.

I hate to say that but even combat feels sloooow and boring. Yet it is pretty. The world is very detailed and yet boring. Even when you have things somewhat figured out. You end up doing mindless quests going from point A to point B and then conversation and then go to point C. Click click click.

It makes Vindictus which really has no content start looking better. I will keep trying the game for the next month but I am sure I will dump it once Guildwars comes out.

I have a feeling that Tera is going to be what Final Fantasy XIV should have been.

LoL... you don't know how stooopid I felt during the opening tutorial when my character just stood there and the game prompted me to get into the active stage.  I think I scared the cats yelling...  "HOW???!!!" at my screen before I figured it out.

Oh, being here since six years and post number 1! :)

So far, I must unfortunately agree. I am sort of split. Some times I feel really good playing it, other times it feels like a chore. More like fighting the game system than the mobs. I didn't expect an easy game, but not to fight the game mechanics! But it seems unready games release is the norm these days. (Hello Civ 5! +__+  )

is there anything or new that we don't know?  i believed we are more or less well informed about FFXIV from OBT days to the current CE & SE  (paid to play Beta) players experience.

  • YamotaYamota Member UncommonPosts: 6,593

For those saying you dont need more characters than one. There is more than one race and if you like to play those then you have to shell out, not a one time fee, but a fee every month for every character you have over one.

It is the ultimate money grabbing scheme.

From playing the game I found no new innovative features for this MMO beyond the graphics. The level of detail may go beyond even Age of Conan which I believe was the MMO that had the best graphics. Other than that, I can't see anything. In way Age of Conan is superior with it's graphics because it's zones are HUGE and wide open vs the tunnel system that Final Fantasy uses.

Don't quote me though, someone else may have played game longer than I have and found the mechanics of some other aspect innovative. I haven't tried crafting yet. The ability switch careers may seem innovative but that was in their previous MMO.

I guess people have still yet to realize that characters are $3.00 a pop so that they could offer a $10.00 a month subscription to people who only use one character..

  • RyukanRyukan Member UncommonPosts: 858

Having to pay extra for extra characters is just a 'preview' of the soon to come item shop.

Lol... fail.  WHY can someone please tell me WHY!?!?!?! people don't think things through before invensting millions of dollars on a crap shoot? you know what this combat system sounds like? it sounds like the lead combat programming enginner couldn't figure out how to consistantly check the players status without lagging the client, so he decided to make it manual.... gg dude, it sounded good in your head but failed in application.  Perhaps instancing a server that is going to have multiple platforms on it to reduce the lag would of been another great idea..... And limiting the player essentially tells them how to play your game. (Restricting a player to 1 character is a really, really, really, REAAAALY bad idea.) It's another one of those "Sounds good in your head, but fails in application" things.  I give this game... 4 months.

Sounds good in your head, but fails in application! give me your money and i'll make you a game that will consume the masses!

    gm lol 4 months lmao

  • RyukanRyukan Member UncommonPosts: 858

It will go f2p long before it ever closes down. The foundationi for the item shop is there already with the Crysta system and the pay for extra character slots system.

LoL! And they call this a review? Seems author have to say only good words. So review appeared quite short and slim. Because, if you look just a bit deeper in any part of the game you can’t miss negative words.

I encourage all the SWG vets to try this one out.    The muliticlass system, the crafting, and the player economy will remind them of the good old days.   The combat may not be as fast paced (although it can be in a group setting) and not all the animations are flashy, but it still requires more than just mashing a button.    As a melee character mixing abilities from various professions reminds me of Fencer / TKA / Swordsman mixes.   If you want an Archer that can cast healing spells, you can do that as well.

True there are no tutorials, and you WILL have to ask for help every now and then, but overall, I've found the game experience to be rather satisfying.   If you are used to the way WoW plays, then you will be in for a shock.    It may take a little longer to adjust to the way FFXIV plays.

Regardless of what people say, this game is not catered to the hardcore.   I can log in and play for 1 hour and still feel like I accomplished something.

And kudos to the reviewer, for focusing on the good parts and not lingering on the bad.

If FFXIV has SOMETHING that appeals to you then give it a shot,  but give it an HONEST shot, don't log in with any bias for or against the game.     Who knows, you might like it.

Ummm, shouldn't it use equal parts of both to seem unbiased?

No, actually they don't call this a review. They said preview, many times, including the article's title "Eorzea Preview".

I just love it when someone tries to be a smartass and ends up looking the opposite because they lack the ability to read and process the information correctly. Perhaps it's because they're so in a hurry to be negative.

It's no wonder some of you are having such a difficult time with this game.

Hate on the game all you want for its technical faults, i.e. lag, cumbersome menus, etc., but don't give me this, "the game sucks (because I'm too lazy to read and figure things out on my own)" excuse. I have no problem with those of you complaining about the game's mechanics and how its doesn't feel ready for primetime. That is a 'game' problem! However, this game sucks because I'm lazy and don't want to read and therefore can't figure things out; that is entirely a 'you' problem!
