FFXIV or Aion

PabswikkPabswikk Member Posts: 108

I know this may initially seem like a really weird choice (or a bad choice depending on your viewpoint) but I am at a stage where I can either renew my Aion sub, or go and try FFXIV instead. I like the setting and backstory of each compared to other MMOs, and both seem to have a fairly solid story running throughout. So basically, which one do you guys think I should choose and why do you think I should choose that one?

One is focused on pvp the other not.

That is one of the major points to try x or y it's a matter of preference.

Aion has a lot of problems...but its light years more complete than FFXIV.

FFXIV currently has no content at all, the economy is broken, the game is undocumented and its probably going to be some time before these issues are fixed.

If you are trying to decide between the two, Id recommend Aion hands down.

Okay but is there ANY PVP in FFXIV? And it is at all meaningful, or is it just like battlegrounds and tokens and stuff?

If your really looking for a game with PvP go with Darkfall.  FF14 as far as I been playing it is a good game and I am having fun in it.

Not looking for PVP per se, just like to have a bit of it at least in my MMOs

There is no PvP in FFIV at all right now.

@Pyrostasis: what do you mean by content ? There are 17 classes to level up, a beautiful world to explore, you van make your living in the game as a crafter or gatherer as well, not only as a combat character, there is a huge main questline with great cutscene and interesting story...what kind of content are you missing ?

There is no PvP to speak of to date in FFXIV. Based on the gameplay mechanics of FFXIV, I feel that PvP would suck in the game and be very frustrating and painful experience.

If given the choice (or having the choice forced upon because I would not willingly have anything to do with Aion of FFXIV again) between resubbing to Aion (I was subbed to it, for a month) or playing FFXIV...I would run back to Aion with open arms.

Also, I gotta agree with Pyrostasis, the amount of content in FFXIV is pretty thin and amounts to more grinding than Aion could ever force you to do hehe.

A character to level isnt content, content is an activity, a dungeon, a quest, etc.

Currently you get 8 combat leve quests per 36 hours. Grouping is penalized due to exp, and it takes an average of 3 - 10 minutes per level solo. lets say 5 minutes. Thats 45 minutes of quest led gameplay per 36 hours.

There are 0 non story line quests atm. So you get a quest at 1, 10, 15,20 etc. In between...nada

    There are currently no dungeons.

Post level 20 exp drops to a crawl, you get 100exp roughly per mob, and need somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 to level. Enjoy that.

So, as I said prior, the ONLY content in game atm is levequests and the story quests. Neither will keep you busy for very long. Grinding would be an option, but there are no dense areas with mobs. Everything is very spread out, and you are competing with everyone else having the same problem.

Grouping is penalized due to the way class exp is earned, so if you group you level at a fraction of the rate of a soloist, and if you group more than 2 people, there is currently a bug where you may simply get no exp at all.

If you enjoy crafting... then FFXIV may be fun...however, even as a crafter there are woes. For instance, the market is horrible right now due to the current implementation of market wards, making it damn near impossible to find the matts you need with out massive time sink. Second, level 12 crafting tools require a level 21 crafter to make, so expect high failure rates due to this. Every item requires at least 3 sometimes as many as 5 different crafting classes to complete, so, you are either going to be forced to level them all, or, spend hours and hours and hours on the forums and /shout trying to find someone who is selling what you need to complete the item you want to make.

Finally... even if you make said item, unless you are using it yourself, you get to go through the selling process which is also a pain in the butt....

I can go on and on...

    Pick Aion.

I think it depends on the server and faction you played on in Aion. Have a look at the forums for the faction issues. I think most of it has stabilised somewhat at least for Siel and Ishraphel. Nezekan is a ghosttown, there is talk of a merger, Zikel has a severe lack of Asmos, and Vaizel, is where all the Asmos went for Easymode (Yes yes, I know, open server transfers for 1 week made it all screwy, so it wasnt intentionally easymode, but refusing to Xfer off has made it so)

I'd say FFXIV needs about 6 months to bake before being worth playing for anyone besides the faithful.

    Go with Aion for now.
