1 day to a month: to many to count

1+ month:Several.... Ive played many mmo's, most of which lasted up to a month

6+ months: 7 which were UO, AC, EQ, EQ2, WoW, Vanguard, and DAOC

1+ year: EQ, EQ2, and WoW

UO was my first ever MMO and I played that for around 7 months, next came Asherons call which I played for about 7 months as well... Then I decided to give EQ a try and played it off and on for about 3 and a half years..

EQ holds the reins as the greatest and most challenging/exciting MMORPG I've ever had the privilege of playing..

    - Make crafting a class choice rather than a side-game

    - Create event content that requires the participation of members from entire factions on a regular basis

First, I'd like to say If I was creating a MMORPG, I'd hire you right away! lol...

           1) I'd still allow players the freedom of soloing, however, I'd make it so you get much less xp than you get if your grouped.

          2) I like the auction house in some ways, but I agree in removing auction hourses.. EQ paved the way when they created Bazaar's in the Nexus.. I still miss those days sitting in Eastern Commonlands for hours buying and selling items for a profit, lol. People would sit there for a while and eventually keep dropping their prices on items. I'd buy them as cheap as possible and resell them for a nice profit, haha.. Made some nice cash doing that :)  But the point is, taking away Auction Houses will force people to go somewhere to sell their goods. Eventually, after you've spent hours grinding it out, you can go to an area and just relax for a while and have some fun socializing with other people while trying to buy or sell your goods!

         3) I really hate Bind to equip and No drop soulbound items!! I hate it with a passion, you don't even understand! If I was creating an MMORPG, BOE and Soulbound items  would only be long epic quest items rewards! Obviously they should be no drop. BUT, every item that drops off bosses and rare named mobs should be tradeable no matter what.. If I use that bad azz weapon for 20 levels, then get myself an upgrade, I should be allowed to sell it to another player or give it to a twink! Just like it was in EQ!

The way I see it is that a bad community can drive one away from good gameplay, but good community doesn´t make up for bad gameplay. So yeah I would go with gameplay more important then community. Not saying community isn´t important though.

All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.

    They don't... anymore.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

i agree with the "1st" theory

if WoW was your first.. chances are you're not going to enjoy another mmo

Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.

I used to agree with that until I found a few MMOs that I really enjoyed, sometimes more than WoW.

I think it has more to do with a) lack of choices back then or b) lack of knowledge about alternatives. For example, WoW was my first MMO. When I first started playing I only knew about UO and EQ. Both of those seemed ancient compared to WoW so I stuck with WoW. I had no idea about AO, DAoC, EQ2, Ryzom, SWG, CoH, EVE, etc. It was only after I had completely burned out on WoW that I seriously started hunting for another MMO and found out about the others.

And now, a new MMO player has a lot of options to choose from. If there's an inkling of boredom, they can easily pick another and jump ship. That wasn't so easy back in the "old days".

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

SWG UO and WOW are the only ones that have made it past the 6 month mark, with LOTRO coming in right on the edge of that number.  No eastern MMO has lasted more than a couple months except Lineage 2 which lasted close to 4 months.  Everything else usually lasts the first month and is normally cancelled and uninstalled within the first 2 weeks.

It depends how good the game is ofcourse and how many classes/builds there are. In mmorpgs I always level every class and every build with every race possible to max level. ( or a certain pvp lvl ) It`s so fun.. =D

    1+ month: 5

    6+ months: 0

    1+ year: 1

    Longest: WoW (3 years)

I joined WoW not long after it was released, went to an RP Server where my brother played, and it was probably one of my best gaming experiences ever. However, my liking of it dwindled upon BC's release. I tried WotLK and dropped sub not long after I hit Lv. 80. What I missmost was the vanilla times, before raids and epics, when I just ran around in ignorant bliss.

    Asheron's Call - 4 Years.

City of Heroes - 2 Years

    WoW - 6 Months

    LOTRO - 2 Months

    Vanguard SOH - 2 Months

Darkfall, Champions Online, Lineage II, Eve, Star Trek Online, FFXIV, POTBS, Age of Conan, Aion, DDO, GW, EQ2, SWG, and a few more I can't remember off the top of my head - Less than a month

I'm admittedly a graphics whore who is still waiting on a game with amazing graphics and great gameplay.  For some reason, even in 2010, devs still seem to make us choose between graphics and gameplay.  Most great games are ugly, and most gorgeous games are crap.  Go figure...

I give all MMOs that I have been following 3 months to determine if I am going to invest fully. I feel this is enough for me to casually dabble in the gameplay and features, develop relationships/ get active in a guild,  and give dev team to deal with launch related bugs. If the game ends up being more work than enjoyable, I move on. If I am thinking about the game at night, at work and scouring websites for more info then I am invested.

The only exception was Champions Online. i left the game on while working and my kids got on, now I can't shake them off it.

I showed them the vids of GW2 and threatened them with harsh penalties if they steal that one from me.

So that is the only one I am paying for now. Shamefully, it is a babysitter while I have the little darlings at work ).

I've not played any for quite a while, even though I have the urge to.  I don't feel like I'm getting anything out of them anymore, I have experienced achievements on Xbox Live and want more, I think there should be a system similar for MMO games in general.
