SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Sony Online Entertainment has revealed that DC Universe Online will be delayed until 'early 2011'. Originally set to release in November 2010, Sony has guaranteed that players who preorder the game prior to November 15th will have access to the beta beginning November 30th. Additionally, players with VIP cards and who have registered on the official site will receive beta access as early as next week.

Anyone pre-ordering the game after November 15 will gain beta access one week prior to the launch date and will be able to participate in the special beta ending event entitled Battle of the Legends with the rest of the beta participants. As an additional bonus, all beta participants will be recognized post release with a special emblem for their character when the game goes live. Beginning October 7, 2010, instructions on how to qualify and receive your pre-order beta key, visit: www.dcuniverseonline.com/betakey.

Those wishing to register for beta without pre-ordering have until 11:59pm PST tonight. This is a general queue and does not assure access.

Beta access one week before launch. Gives you less time to cancel your pre-order. Too late, I already cancelled mine. Nothing I've seen makes this look worth $15 a month with an item shop on the side.

    Probably a smart move

The magnifying glass placed on new MMOs has never been larger. Any shortcoming, no matter how inconsequential is being amplified disproportionatly. Many people are ready to call and post "FAIL" based on little more than the cinimatic trailer. The launch of a game (and the 1st month) is the most important factor in determining how well a game will be over the subsequent years. If DCUO is not ready for prime time, it is in their best interest to hold back.

I think most of us expected / wanted this, and we are now breathing a sigh of relief now that they have officially announced the delay. I think the game will be better for it.

Good! I expect it would be more awesome once it releases given the time for last minute changes.

Cata release date announced earlier today for December. DC Universe announces a delay.

    obvious news is obvious.

it was due in November, no Open Beta as of yet (amusingly they thought they'd give away various items for preorders at various stores RATHER than dealing with things like Open Beta PRness).

obvious. Probably be a semi success on the PS3 but PC wise... haha... not a chance. sorry.

Lol, that it is. Plus gives them extra time to finishing polishing out the game +/or add additional content/features.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    ..

damn damn damn... What am I to do now? I was so ready to play it in 4 weeks. :(

One the one hand better delay and make it good than buggy and not ready. On the other hand in early 2011 it starts to collide almost already with SWTOR and many other stuff, like GW2. Maybe not such a smart move. A longer time before TOR & GW2 would have been better IMO.

Blast... what do I do now with my time. I was so excited to roll a hero. *sob*

EDIT: So the silence WAS indeed forboding bad news...

Disappointing but not very surprising. At first it was coming out in April, then November, now in the spring again. They need to try and avoid the Cataclysm and Star Wars backwash I guess.

Better than release the game too early.

Must be your first SOE game. Welcome to the club.

And get used to those silences.

I highly doubt they are depending on WoW players. Thats like Apple Bee's or Chili's not wanting to run their store next to a McDonalds. Sure, McDonalds gets more costumers, but the people that know better still go to the places with better food.

It really really annoys me that people that think their gamers because they got into online games with WoW think that that WoW is the ultimate game that affects everything. They just got lucky with advertiasing and reaching a lot of people (they are the ONLY mmo game to advertise in the United States). Just like those crappy brwser "games" FarmVille and Mafia Wars (which makes over 500 Million a year by the way) the masses will play garbage, even though better things existed years before it and better things exist after it.

The delay is obvious because the date was closing in and they clearly werent ready.

  • bobfishbobfish Member UncommonPosts: 1,679

They might not be relying on WoW players, but they would be relying on the press, retailers and everything else that you need at launch to not be completely void because Cataclysm has nabbed all the spotlight.

Doesn't matter what genre the game is and whether it crosses over with your intended market, you always should avoid launching near blockbuster sellers and we all know Cataclysm is going to sell more than any normal game would.

They may avoid Cata now but, a spring release will put them close to The Old Republic. Careful.

  • tyanyatyanya Member Posts: 199

It was inevitable and although I hear the comment above re Old Republic, it would be a major surprise if that title didnt also find itself delayed....marketing announce these things way too early. I just hope that the delay will result in a fully rounded game on release rather than a bare bone Cryptic style bolt on to a totally inadequet core.

  • GrayGhost79GrayGhost79 Member UncommonPosts: 4,775

Yeah, it isn't very likely that the delay had anything to do with Cataclysm or SWTOR but the delay was expected at this point. No CB or OB or any word of either prior to this and release was right around the corner.

i was really  hoping to see dcuo in november .

with so many mmos coming out early next year im going to have to save some money

to afford them all at the same time

Yep! I'm glad to see they pushed it back, rather than try to rush beta.

Perhaps they learned from Funcom's mistake; Funcom shoved AoC out of the door in order to beat WAR's launch, and they saw a large number of players flock to WAR when it released. It is also a good idea to give whatever new WoW expansion that has released a couple months of playing before releasing as well.
