Lost in a world with nothing to do an no one to talk to

crunchyblackcrunchyblack Member Posts: 1,362

This is summing up my experience starting out MO.

The in game user guide only goes so far.

There is no frame of reference as to where i am and where i am going.

I have rerolled mabey 12 times.  During my exploration of the vast empty world, over several starter towns, i have managed to kill myself by falling, drowning, attempting to attack a wolf and a mountain spider.

The mobs killed me in 2 hits, without me doing much, if any damage in return.  All times i have died, i have found it quicker and less "pain in the ass" to just reroll, rather than find a priest.  The few times i have tried to find the priest, i end up in water, and moving at a snails pace to my destination, only to be stuck in the water, figuing it would be faster to reroll rather than slowly and somewhat blind patrol the shore line looking for a spot that will allow me to exit the body of water.

So here i am not, a halfbreed, in the town that starts with an F (i have no way of checking where i acutally am, such as a map of any type.  I am currently at half life, chasing rabbits and trying to engage combat.  Not sure how to rest up, only other people have to be farming bots, they all look exactly the same (deafault characters) and never respond to anything i may say, however no one does.

So, for someone who is interested, how long should i expect to be wandering around what seems to be a vast and empty world.  Are there mobs anywhere i can actually engage in combat without a 3 shot death?  What do people do exactly in this game, i mean theres not even a way to really communicate with other players.

Exploration is an other huge part of MO progression. There is no map so what you expected? You just have to get use to the game. At the start, you should not even roam too far from the starter town. Try to start lumber jack or mining to raise your stats. After a while, you will be strong enough to kill pigs.

Number 1 hint to starting Mortal-- make sure that you have only your sword equipped. If you have the sword and pickax equipped you won't do any damage in combat. If you're in Fabernum, there are weasels just outside of town, which are an easy kill.

I understand exploration is important, but a frame of referance is nice, any.  I dont even know what the name of the town im near is, nor can i really ask in game.  This is why im resting and asking stuff i would normally ask in game, here.  Luckily there are people responding.

I understand this game will have a learning curve, and i am not close to rage uninstalling or flipping out about this game sucks.

You suggest starting as a lumberjack, mind you ive rerolled about 12 times in a "sandbox"  i think i chose ruffian this time and a fighter race and stat build, i would like to stick with it this time.  I would not be against making a new character with a new focus and keep lumberjacking in mind however.

So what i am assuming to be the usual woodland "prey" mobs are what are the starter "mobs", as such i will grind on those for a bit.  I wasnt sure what to expect in terms of starter mobs, as i had absolutly no frame of reference.

    * oh and i killed one of those "players" that had to be a bot, i got a murdercount, is this bad?  The bot in question didnt respond or fight back and had nothing to loot on it or anything i could try to loot.

I would agree with this statement in its entirety.  This helped.

    A few tips;

1.) Mine or Lumberjack to get primary attributes up such as strength and con

2.) Fight pigs to get used to combat then ask how to get to Springbok (Springbok give decent money for starter characters)

3.) http://mortal.thamal.de/SkillPlanner.php  is a useful tool for planning out a character. Press 'L' to see what skills you currently have, all skills can be adjusted by changing the symbol in the top right of the box to a Lock, Plus or Minus sign.

Purchase skillbooks to help you achieve your chosen build. Eaither ask around ingame for what books you need and where the libriarian is.

Some abilities have prequisities before you can learn them, look at the skill planner carefully to see what is what.

4.) I suggest you join an established guild unless you're hellbent on solo play. MO is very group and guild based for now and direct communication over ventrilo will help you jump the learning curve.

5.) As for your location you'll have to learn the local areas to find your way however the map in the politcal forums is very good to use. http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/49588-political-map.html

Most people wacking away at tree's or rocks are semi afk.  They probably won't talk to you.  If you go in town and ask for help you'll probably receive some.  You may want to join a clan or check out this link.

When I played Meridian and Lineage I had no maps either (they might have added them later however). I liked that part of them.

And you have to get used that no one tells you what to do in a sandbox. But you should really try to get into a guild, soloing sandbox games kinda sucks and guildies usually helps out the new guy with questions and such.

Well so far, ive camped a tree, farmed it a while.  It made my movement much faster.  Not a huge fan of the trade exchange system, but its not horrid.

So now im farming bush pigs, with a few spare swords.

Im curious, will i be fighting mobs that drop equipment any time soon, or is it more or less "prey" mobs for the time being.  Id like to eventually get a club, since i chose ruffian i believe (any way to check?) Possible some armor.

I also have some questions about skills and stats.  I see a +,- and lock icon.  How do they work exactly, it seems like the have no effect.  Will i have to manage the set maximun of attribute points?  For instance, i was camping a tree for a while, my woodcutting skill and gathering skill have raised, is there any way to lower (i assume the minus sign icon, however it doesnt seem to do anything)

Still the lack of any form of communication with the community is making this one lonely game.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. Just wondering if there´s a starter place that should be avoided? As in no people there at all. I´ve decided to check it out again since I didn´t have the power to run it fully at launch.

All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.

Im literally playing in the backround, using this as a global chat.

Also i think i can help you a little.  Ive rolled about 12 characters for various reasons, and have tried a few starter areas.  Roll a halfbreed and start in Fabernum, cant remember what it is exactly.  Its an absolutly beautiful starting area, its populated, however i havent run into a single ganker.  Mobs to fight are literally down the path a decent ways.  Trees and rocks to mine right outside the town walls.  I suggest doing that untill your pick axe breaks for the stats.  All the other starting towns ive choses over the various races were dead, and there seemed very difficult to find anything to kill.

Also rolling a halfbreed is less confusing, 2 of your parents are set, the other two you choose between like 4 or 5 obvious classes.

Normally I would answer some questions for the new player in this thread but I'm too tired right now. The best advice I can give is ask questions on the official forums here and look into logging into the Mortal Onlien IRC channel which would be much more responsive than asking questions here especially since there are so many people trolling this board.

    Alright, after day #1

I have aleady maxed out str, from endless chopping of wood, and selling it.

I have read a crafting book, how to make weapons, although i cant make weapons yet, so im reading about blunt weapons.

Im not sure how to approach crafting, to be honest.

All i can suggest for a new player, is to start in halfbreed land, first step is not to dual weild the weapon(sword) and havest tool (pickaxe).  Your first goal should be finding a tree to chop with your armed pickaxe (hit L for skills).  Camp there untill you use you axe, sell wood, but more axe's repeat.  Do this for a while, youll gain lots of base stats, and some cash. THen follow the path and start killing mobs.

So my str is maxed, my cont is close, if not maxed, and my dex is behind, psy and int are locked.

At this point, i really want to either start crafting weapons (not sure how far away this is) or farming better equipment (are there any mobs that drop equipment? or is it 100% crafted?)

For crafting will i need to read a bood on handles, heads, basic skill category, and basic weapon category?  Or is there a way to start crafting with out having to read several 9 hour books?

     *************************************************************************************************************************************8

I also seem to be having an issue with some of the trade npc, where i buy 3 pickaxe, i end up with 1 but having paid for all 3 (i can see in the trade window 3 pickaxe, and the price for them, i then add the silver to balance out correctly, both price and pay will match exactly, i accecpt, recieve one axe but have paid for all 3)  THis a known issue?  It is not me accidentially not matching price paid and goods recieved.

About this issue... pickaxe is suppose to be priced at 100C or 200C?  I think theres an error in the price of the pickaxe causing this problem, just happend again, bought 1 pick for 100c, balanced out 400C to match my 500c stack, price paid matches vlaue of goods recieved, i recieve axe and 1s not 4 like it origonally showed.  Either way theres an issue.

Yes there is a bug that only allows you to buy 1 pickaxe from a vendor at a time.

See you in game.  Despite the negativety I still enjoy the game.  It has its anoying bugs that they need to fix,  but still a great game and I still have fun.

Weapons and armor are 100% player crafted.

Remember, you cant be everything in this game. Its very difficult to be a gatherer/crafter AND a fighter. You just dont have enough skill points to spead out like that and be really effective at anything.

Your best bet would be to keep your fighter and raise the skills he needs and buy weapons and armor.

Just kill animals and keep selling what you loot (to either players or vendors). You can also keep woodcutting as a way to make a little extra.

Use your other 2 character slots to make gatherers/crafters that you can use to supply your fighter.

As for the Pickaxe. Its a bug. Pickaxes dont actually stack, so when you buy them stacked off the vendor all but 1 will vanish when it xfers to your inven.

    Buy 1 at a time. 1 silver (100 copper)

    So two things now.

I have blunt weapons skill 57 and handle and pol 22. How do i make use of them, what is the process to start making clubs ect.

Since i have spent a majority of my time chopping trees for stats, i obviously have a lot of points in gathering, as well as the 3 books ive read towards making a weapon.  This means i will not be a very good fighter right?

If so, is there a way to trade with other characters on my account.  Will i be a crafter that cannot fight and cannot easily feed any other characters on my account?

    I havn't gone deep into crafting so I can not help you for weapon crafting. However you won't be a via PvP character on your crafter and to get items from one character to another you need;

    a.) Two accounts

b.) A guild member or friend to hold items for you

first things first. you are very limited with what you can do with every character. you only have 1000 primary skill points ( 10 fully maxed primaries) on any given characters and this will severely limit what that caracter can do. you must choose what you want that character to be, either a melee fighter, mage/healer, bow crafter, armor crafter, miner, tamer, extractor, weappon crafter, etc.   10 primaries are used up very fast. wile there is the possibility of a little tweaking with the fighter's builds( fighter with a little magic healing, or mage with taming and creature control, and so on) most crafting profession will take up ALL you primary points and you will still be forced to choose a  specialization.

second. the only thing you need as a crafter is intelligence, after that is all about just reading books and skilling up your primary crafting skills by actualy crafting stuff. remeber that any material you want to use requires a "material lore" which sometimes requires a primary skill. google "mortal online skill list" for a very useful skill list.

for example lest say you want to craft 2 handed sword out of steel. you will need to learn: Weappon Crafting ( primary), Basic Blade Crafting (primary), Advanced Blade Crafting (primary), Greatblade Crafting (secondary), Metallurgy (primary), Iron Based Alloys (secondary), Steel Lore (secondary), Handle and Pole Crafting (primary), 1h Blade Hilt Crafting (primary), 2h Blade Hilt Crafting (secondary). that's 6 primaries right there. you can see how fast you'll use up 10 primaries.

third. yes if you make a crafter you will suck at fighting. this is why you get 3 characters. choose wisely what you want to do with them. you can try to have them complement each other. for example make 1 slagh hauler to get your metals, 1 weappon maker, and 1 fighter but you will still have to relly on others for your armor and horses. or you can make 1 bow crafter, 1 armor crafter, archer/tamer but you will still have to relly on other players for your materials and so on. you will never be completely self sufficient in this game, this is why being in a guild is extremely important.

fourth. the only way to trade between characters on the same account is A: get one other player to hold your stuff wile you switch to the other character, B: suicide in a secluded place and then log on your second character and loot your first character's bag. WARNING: anyone can loot that bag wile you are switching characters so make sure you do this in a very secluded place preferebly at night.

Just going to plug my guide here, and catch me on IRC if you need some help in game.  Mobs don't drop armor or weapons, just materials you can either vendor for silver, or use the raw materials to craft with.  Getting good materials is easy, and it's not too hard to find crafters willing to help you out.  Being in a guild helps tremendously as they make sure to have 1-2 of each type of crafter and usually have spare sets of armor and weapons.

I'm with ya OP. I feel like I just got ripped off big time. I'll mess around for the first month to give things a chance, but my first thought is WTF???

My first experience was soooooo lame.

Starting city, nothing going on at all.. no hint at anything about any game system or goal or anything at all really. I wanfered around to learn the NPC's and then set off to find something to kill.

First thing I encounter.. two players just sitting there at the exit area to the starter city. Gank...

these elite pvp'ers spend their time killing 5 min old noobs.. encouraging eh? The game is so pathetic that the only people in sight find killing lootless, challengeless noobs to be the best use of their time.

Part two - I get out of the area so tweedle de and tweedle dumb don't grief me anymore.. Great way to kill a game that is already about to die imo.. just harrass every new player so we can keep the pop as close to zero as possible. (only two players I ever saw BTW).

Now I find a mob (just one) after walking for ten minutes. Kill it in two shots and get some road kill bits as loot. With my pocket full of guts I set off to increase my skills some more! I find a mountain spider, which I figure will own me, but WTH.. I beat on it for 5 minutes doing almost no damage to it's health bar. It never hits me, jsut runs away until it gets stuck on a fail piece of terrain (lots of shoddy terrain!!!). So I decide I will exploit this bug as any self respecting, paying customer would do in a game that offers so little opportunity!. I continue beating on it and finally the health bar drops a bit. Might give me some valuable loots for a noobster so I keep going. Then it just disappears...

I walked for a long time after that.. Never saw another mob, never saw a player again. Finally I just logged out.

    lol...

I hope this "EPIC" patch breathes some life into this thing and gives the uber goobers something to do besides encourage players to NOT log in.

I suspect this thing is a dead man walking already, but we'll hang around for awhile anyhow.

  • cirsyndiccirsyndic Member UncommonPosts: 261

Im really suprised by that, about a few weeks after release there was big talk about how things need to be improved because 3 out of 4 players are lost in the first 4 hours in-game. Lots of talk about NPC's handing out "tasks" and Counselors being in every town to try and chat people up.

I didn't expect they'd completely overhaul the experience, but your description feels alot like Closed/Open Beta was towards the end. Shame really. :/
