Virtual property theft (short) survey

Good morning/evening everyone!

I'm a researcher at Deakin University in Australia. I am conducting research into finding a solution to the booming crime of virtual property theft in virtual world games and environments (WoW, AoC, Eve, Guild Wars, Second Life etc).

I am keen on hearing from all MMORPG players!

The Survey is quite short (5 mins if that) and flows well (very little if any writing will be required).  I would very much appreciate your participation and input.

As you can see the link is legit. I have viewed forum rules and it appears it should be acceptable for me to post this here.

Thank you very much for your participation and lets all help to put an end to this crime!

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

    Done, Interesting Research

Finished, but I don't feel the 'in game currency' part was very accurate. I've had many millions

Also, the idea of "owning" virtual items is a bit hazy depending on what legal system you're in.

Done and hope you got your IRB cleared (then again not sure if they have em in Oz). I won't ask about your sampling plan though =)

Done. I took the survey because I was amazed that so many people are willing to take it. Good luck with the survey.

Up to 500 results so far, more needed though! Aiming for 1000 :)

Nice new type of research project.

I get sick of seeing the MMORPG demographic/mentality survey "research" crap. It's old and tired. This is something I haven't seen or heard anyone doing before.

You may want to expand on #10 though. Is that real world money or is that virtual money?

5000 gold in WoW is equivalent to about 250mill in EVE. In real world money, they are only worth about $5-10.

Thanks.  Yeah the demographic/mentality stuff has been done to death!

Appreciate your feedback, will let everyone know when the results are available.

The survey seems heavily skewed towards people who have a single WoW account.

The questions are also highly biased towards the answers they're seeking...  for example: if you pay a subscription fee, do you think the host should provide better account security?  Well of course everyone is going to answer yes, because you worded the question in a way that answering no is illogical: no, I'd expect them to provide WORSE security measures IF I PAY THEM!  Of course not: the qualifiers make that answer highly illogical.  I don't expect them to provide BETTER security features either (better than what?), but I do expect them to provide specific security features like "not throwing the data servers in a lake" and "being able to access my account if somebody hasn't stolen it."

It definately wasnt intended to be skewed towards a particular virtual world like WoW.  It has slight preference to it, since it has the highest population of any other and the results so far, most of the theft occurs in WoW.

I guess that question was intended to state something along the lines of, do you feel if you pay a subscription you should recieve effective protection from thieves more so than what you have now. The argument might be that they cant provide better security with the current subscription price and may have to boost it up to allow for better features which people would not prefer.

Thanks for the feedback, as I have said I didnt throw it together in five minutes I had a number of Dr's check it along with the ethics committee and friends.  This is about the 15th version, by that time I figured it cant be perfect for everyone.  Still has provided alot of useful and interesting results.

Done... but oddly enough, the survey felt like you were probing to see if it would be worth it to try and come up with a third party security measure that you would be charging for.

    Oderint, dum metuant.

I got suspicious at the question "would you pay extra for better security measures?"  Makes me think this is a marketing survey.

    Important facts:
    1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
    2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
    3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
    4. Community is more important than you think.

Bingo... that's a question of pocket books, not a simple gathering of information over stolen accounts.

If asked the question whether or not I'd be comfortable having my account security go through and/or be willing to pay a third party vendor for added security, a resounding "Hell no!" would be in order.

I can assure you its not a marketing survey.  The key to my thesis is designing a security mechanism which comes free with new VWEs or as a patch for current generation VWEs.

  • JimmacJimmac Member UncommonPosts: 1,660

Yeah, this is about as much of a marketing survey as the hype meter is accurate of what games will be good. Come on.
