I don't see this game going f2p. If XI still isn't this really won't. I know it won't be a WoW killer but I don't think it was every planning to be. SE does their own thing and you know what they're a large enough company to make mistakes. Weather this is one I don't know yet but I like what I hear honestly.(I know it has issues but it's truly not a game for the average MMO player of today)
No you're not better off. Games get improvements from increased revenue. Warcraft took off after the Southpark episode because of the massive influx of people flooding the servers. Those profits paved the way for updates & content which would've never occured otherwise.
I was an avid XI player until that point. i was so glad I swapped over. Since I quit WoW, I've played EQ, Aion, EvE, and Jade Dynasty in search of something that was representative of up to date graphics. I'm hoping XIV is it, but my initial impressions are dissatisfied.
The fact that SE is bumping the monthly cost up (3 bucks for an alt!?!? wtf!), removing our AH (ease of purchasing/selling), placing a stranglehold on our progression (exp caps.. you must be shitting me.), archaic & slow combat, and giving us false stats for minimum comp specs (see below).. is making me think twice before getting my own copy. Don't even get me started on their decision to continue rolling w/ Direct X 9 instead of 11..
Here's the scoop, both my wife & I agreed to upgrade our comps in order to play XIV. I'm going with a custom Phenom X4 rig that I'm building, & she opted for a serviceable notebook from Bestbuy. Her Gateway clears the minimum specs by a fair margin & has a graphics card which exceeds the requirements SE lists on their website as well.
LAG
I ran the FFXIV benchmark program for her and she scored in the low 300's. Usable is above 1k I think. Weak. Now she's pissed off & disappointed because she just wanted to play the damn game. She's also bummed that she won't be able to her standard 2 mules rolling again due to the retarded pricetag on alts.
yes, we understand how retainers work.
While I only started playing Final Fantasy games a couple years into the release of XI, she's been playing since FF3 and has purchased religiously ever since. We even attended a distant worlds concert in Dallas, TX. We had the highest hopes for FFXIV as we've been falling through space ever since our departure from WoW. We're beginning to see that Square Enix is nothing more than a Cash Cow that loves pumping out games with quality graphics, good storylines, and epic grinds that keep the customers paying & paying & paying & paying. I wonder how much they saved by keeping all the basics of XI in place instead of reinventing..?
At least WoW gave you a solid 3 patches with extended content before hitting you up for another $39. A shantoto ascension!?!? give me a break.
Final Fantasy_zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, sorry guys. I love mmo's, Have pretty much played through all the big names, subscription and free to play. I have loved the FF series ever since they released back in the day, However nice this game looks its as interesting as watching paint dry, Been playing since beta and just cant find the will to stick with this game. Hey just my opinion.

for a game thats as boring as watching paint dry the fact that you played it for at least over a month says quite a bit about you.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling" Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
For 6 months of FFXIV I will be spending $72 with 2 retainers. Right now it's capped to 1 retainer so I only spend $66 if it gets billed that way.
No need for another character, and gl keeping 2 characters even decently leveled. To level a dow/dom you will generally have to level 3-4 extras for pickup skills. Same with DoH... I am an armorsmith and to be self sufficient I need armorsmithing, blacksmithing, goldmithing, weaving, leatherworking, and carpentry all around the same level. Lets not forget about the DoL! I need botanist and mining to supply those hands...
An armorsmith that needs to be a botonist too. Hmm, does that mean you press flowers into your armor? Just reading that list tells me how broken their trades systems are.
I think it shows that I based my opinion on wanting to like the game and to give the game a chance, not basing any misconceptions on FFXIV that other people seem to do without even giving the game a go, or slagging it of when they havnt even played it for more than a day..comprende.

You can't seem to read properly. He stated that in order to be a self-sufficant armorsmith he would need to level various other craft skills, such as leatherworking and carpentry, which would require botonist. Sure, pressing flowers into armor would be silly. But, making cloth or leather pads for the armor, making rubber souls for boots, and adding fur finishes all require botonist to collect the mats.
FFXIV is not suppose to be played alone, that's kinda the point.
I think part of the reason they didn't go for the AH was because if their in depth crafting system... You build relation ships with people in other crafts and this allows you both to build higher quality items. And, I don't really see a need for alts when one care can be every class(I might still get one but not for awhile and even if I do it will still be about the same monthly rate as every other mmo).

I'm sorry, but I have to chuckle at this a little bit. It just reads like so many posts I've seen, where the writer seems to have completely dined on SE's bs without even a thought as to what they are being told.
Removing the AH in no way helps crafting, I'm sorry. I know they are trying to spin the lack of an AH like it's a design choice, but that's a mistake. Crafting thrives in a strong economy, and a strong ecnonomy is very much supported by an AH. Trading with other players doesn't stop when you have an AH. It remains very much alive, without making it inconvenient for players to find things. That's how it should be.
As for having a single character, they are doing the same thing with the spin. They are trying to make it seem like a design choice, instead of a business one. Having multiple characters doesn't kill the RP elements of a game, and I can't think of any other MMOs which force you to pay for more than 1 character slot (excluding FFXI, same company).
The lack of substance in this game is just so blatant, I don't see why so many people are content w/ it. Some of the features do carry over from FFXI, but FFXI had at least a good amount of content to make the game enjoyable. This game doesn't even have that atm (though it was supposed to happen @ launch).
I have a strong feeling that this game will actually close down within the first two years. I bought the SE edition and its absolutely horrible. I play EQ 2 as well as WoW. So I know the easy games and the harder games. Ive also played about everything else in the book. This game however, however I look at it, just isn't fun. I made it about a week of playing(what they would allow me too with the fatigue system and all) and then I realized that I simply was just not having fun because I didn't have any freedom in the game. Therefore, I chose to re-sub to EQ2 where I am very pleased. In fact I don't know why I ever stopped playing it. Too many hyped games out there that are just turning out to be trash. FFXIV tops the list however, seeing as the content is just pitiful. Leves Quests are a poor excuse for questing. Anyways, enough out of me. Ive played a broad range of MMO's and gotten to lots of end game in them. I am just trying to save some people money that are on the fence with this one. Don't buy this game. Save your money. I still want a refund, lol.
I really feel sad about this whole FFXIV thing. People are trying to defend it, but its just obvious that game at its current stage will probably appeal to very big fans of FFXI only since FFXIV is basically just a remake with the same game mechanics and better graphics. FFXIV is definitely not made for a broad audience. This game created so much negativity that I don't even want to return to it even in March. We'll see. I think I am done following this game and its progress for a while. Played it in OB, and nothing has changed after release, which I of course expected. This game is not worth the time nor money. I am done with it. Don't think I'll miss anything, cause there is nothign really there to miss.
But you are limited in the number of classes and level you reach in them by your overall level are you not? As your overall level increases you can put up the class levels. But it takes longer and longer to level until you reach a cap, the xp you gain from all of that can't get you to top level in every class. Or does it work another way?
Having to pay extra for extra characters is just a 'preview' of the soon to come item shop.
Just like the item shop in FFXI!
Oh wait....
I know, right?
FFXI had the option you could pay extra for another character, but for what reason? All jobs could be leveled on one character.
Only reason I ever had the one alt was for storage & extra AH slots. FFXIV I will probably stick with one character and one retainer. Oh, and for those who talk about how the game is so terrible.... okay, we understand, you do not like it. I will agree, the UI is messy, the combat can be a bit frustrating at times, and there is some lag. However, I am still having FUN. That is the point of playing a video game, to have FUN. If you are not having fun, then do not continue playing it, simple as that. I am of the mindset that I like exploring, taking my time to discover new things, and I absolutely love having some mystery to the game.
The game isn't perfect, a far shot from it. Oh, and for those of ya who say "wait 6 months"... go ahead, but don't badmouth the people who are paying the monthly fees so that the game can stick around and receive more development for those 6 months.
I bet huge majority of people bought this game simply because it was named Final Fantasy. If it weren't named this even the fanboys would say the game is trash.
.....but a nice feature is that the quest monster or harvesting node spawns only for you. Other players will not be able to see that specific spawn.
Had to stop reading the article after that line. If a reviewer considers that 'A NICE THING', then that person's taste is a complete opposite of mine and no point in reading something that completely contradicts your own views when you are trying to learn about the game.
reading this gives me no reason to even want to try this game, since the only defense the people who like the game can give is, if you don't like all the flaws, don't play. No one even really seems to deny the flaws, they just accept them and deal with them. Not saying thats a bad decision on their part, but at the same time they are not saying what they find fun about the game, just that they are having fun.
That is mostly because its still new to them, and thats all they want is new, I would wager.
plus you can't jump. I've beaten that horse enough, but still, I think its dumb that in a huge game where your toon can master the arcane, the art of swordplay, and communing with the divine to heal your comrades, and sort of vertical lift if beyond your capabilities.

And for people that are still defending the bad stuff about FF, and think that this is the "Japanese Styles". Look at the player ratings and comments from Japan's biggest game site.
If you can't read japanese, just look at the very colorful graph illustrating player ratings. Oops not colorful, all red...lol
And a lot of these Japs' are hardcore FF fans. So, a bad game is bad across cultures and nationalities. Different does not equal innovative nor does it mean the game is more fun.
Each person can only hold enough knowledge to add one small rung to the ladder, but together we can climb to the moon.
