If you take every thing that made FFXI unbearable and add in even more ways to make you hate life you have FFXIV. I didn't play FFXI until years after launch but when I did the cost of another slot was 1 dollar and you couldn't cancel your account unless you deleted your character. The beta for this game was so far from what I find acceptable in an MMO it made me sad thinking about how many hours I had spent playing FF games in my past with no chance to add more fun under the FF name.
The first thing that stood out to me is that I didn't find a single gear vendor outside of the basic ones in the starting city. The reason they gave you access to every single class is that if you don't play every one all the way through you have no chance to have any gear for you character. To those above saying crafting classes don't count, try gearing up a character that didn't bother spending more time than not on those classes. My first class got to level 20 and had enough money to buy 2 of the dozen or so accessories that were meant for level 9 I think. At first I was stunned at how much player vendors were charging for armor but I realized those that crafted had a monopoly on gear in this game. You must level your crafters either to make the stuff yourself or to sell the mats gathered to buy gear from other players. It seriously took more time to get my gear than it did leveling my main class that I wanted to play. I wanted to play a caster/healer but after level 20 being a healer was impossible for me. Every group I tried to get into, I died very quickly.
I thought maybe that later in the game things like that might open up but after not seeing any story or gear for the first 20-25 levels I gave up. I had to spend a dozen or so hours getting my conjurer to that level and another 80 leveling the other classes just to afford some jewelry that was meant for a player half my level? Much of my time was spent outside of the game looking things up on wiki sites just trying to figure out what I did. I understand there will be some people so dedicated to FF they will jump through whatever hoops are put in front of them, but for me, FFXIV saw the end of the time I waste on this franchise.
I think this is one of those games you really gota be a fan to enjoy, I beta tested it, and just could not get into it, was just a little slow pased for my taste, but I know lots of people like it and I hope it does well for them..:) Like I have always said not all games are for everyone and this is one is not for me..:)
Played the Closed Beta, then the Open, and now that it has been released i cant get off it in my free time. I love it and players that are not used to the gameplay might take some getting used to but its such a broad game and a fantasy worth exploring in my opinion. People can be picky but these are the basics of the game and as expansion packs come out you can kiss the last generation's MMOs goodbye.

I forgot to point out that it has improved since the Beta tests in terms of less slugish gameplay, choice of the full 3 cities as opposed to the 1 in the closed beta and i belive that the majority of the bugs have been fixed

Not really. I've never been a fan of final fantasy games. I hated FFXI. But I really like FFXIV. I've been playing MMOs for over 15 years and I enjoy this one more than most of the others I've played. I can definitely understand why many people don't like it. It's not anything like most of the other games on the market and it certainly has some problems that need to be worked out. There is a type of player than enjoys this sort of game though and I am one of them.
