DC Universe Online: Game Delay Q&A

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Earlier this week, it was announced that DC Universe Online would be delayed to 'early' 2011 rather than in November 2010 as originally planned. MMORPG.com writer Bill Murphy had the opportunity to sit down with DCUO's Senior Producer Wes Yanagi specifically to talk about the delay and what exactly it means for the game.

The whole team’s excited about getting DCUO into more hands of the fans that have been so patient and supportive since the game was announced. They’re just as excited about the chance to see their efforts realized and everyone having a blast when the game goes live. Although it means more work, extending our Beta is the perfect opportunity for us to take that extra time to deliver a polished and awesome experience when we turn those servers on for real.

Nothing wrong in my eyes... more time to dev, polish, and add more content. So what it get's delayed? Rather that then be frustrated at an early release and wait for patches to fix the problems.

i think the DCUO guys answer may have revealed the problem with betas in general.  The part Im talking about is "Friends and Family".  No wonder we get games like ffxiv and sto when the majority of feedback comes from devs friends and family. It seems to me friends and family would be less likely to critisize, less likely to risk offending "the ideas"  and direction of a game. It seems to me friends and family would be more likely to tell them what they want to hear.

I knew the November release date was too soon when they've barely talked about beta by this point. So yeah, I'm glad to see the delay too. This'll make sure the game gets going properly.

Hey Wes, way to duck the GREEN LANTERN RING/POWER question. A non answer is still an answer, right?

Wrong. These devs are screwing this game up bigtime. One of the biggest icons in the DC universe and players wont be able to simulate his powers.

TribeofOne , the "Friends and Family" testing stage is for when the game is in a very rough state of completion, and so a very small circle of trusted (not to reveal the problems) people are asked to play the game, to find any glaring problems that the internal QA team has missed.  Once the game is sufficiently stable, it goes to Closed Beta testing, and then to Open Beta.

A change in direction can come at any time.  The game designers may realized that a new direction is needed early on in development (even before the game is announced!) ... or as we've just seen with Maple Story,  player feedback may indicate the need for major changes years after the initial launch.

The delay in DC Universe Online's launch should come as no surprise because the launch date was quickly coming up, and Open Beta testing had not yet commenced.

Damn!  How did my last post end up looking like that, and where's the Edit button?

Here's a prime example of an overcooked press release.  Read those out loud and think about how much it makes you sound like canned ham.  No illusion of the person "talked" to answering the questions at all - it's artificial PR talk that could have anyone's name attached to it.

Ya know, I'm all for a delay when a game needs it, but could someone interview Wes and ask him why he treated fans of the game like idiots for guessing a delay was coming due to no beta news?  They obviously were spot on, and I think he made the dev team look foolish with some of his comments about 'internal betaz' 'everything is fine guyz' stuff.

I think I need to summarise that interview:

    1) We weren't ready for launch.

    2) No.

    3) Please pre-order DCUO!

Is it just me, or are these "friends and family" betas recent? The first I heard about it was with games like crimecraft, APB, and Champions online. And I guess I dont need to say anything further about those games.

I am looking forward to the game but now with the preorder and get into beta bit I geta bad feeling. Too many games have come and gone that have done this. I love the idea of playing in a predefined universe with a comic book mmo. I think the whole reason I didnt get into COH and Champions online was due to lack of history. I want to play this badly but then again I get a sick feeling with the whole preorder and get into beta stuff.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. When I saw the question, I thought we'd finally get a straight answer about light powers. Guess that's too much to ask. Thanks to the interviewer for trying though.

Posters on here were saying the MMO would be a hash if it launches that soon as there has not been a proper beta. Looks like there will be now, but as always don't preorder, wait till launch. You and your mates are not going to die because you could not play it on day one.

If you could see the forum posts, you would see that your conjecture is incorrect. There are already plenty of threads with criticism and debate regarding certain features of the game. To such an extent that there is already back and forth and name calling leading to the derailment and locking of certain threads.

Trust me, some of us are already getting called fanbois for defending the development team and their good decisions. This is despite the fact that I've yet to see any poster flat out defend the development team on every topic.
