EVE Online: Check Your Graphics Card

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In a new blog post on the official EVE Online site, CCP Zulu fires a shot over the bow of players' graphics cards by announcing that ShaderModel 3.0 support will be required to play the game at some point in the first half of 2011. To help players assess whether or not their cards meet the standard, devs have created a small tool to run.

Why are we doing this?

To keep EVE vibrant and alive we publish two expansions every year. We rework art assets to bring them to and beyond the industry standard, we add new game play features, we refactor old systems and in general we keep evolving EVE and keep setting the bar higher for excellence. That means we need to also keep evaluating the platforms that can run the game client and we're now in a position where we need to move to ShaderModel 3.0 to make the next evolutionary step.

Not only is this needed for EVE to look amazing, it's needed for EVE to perform better.

Read more and grab the link to the assessment tool here.

Intel GMA-graphics are not ment to be running 3d-games, so people without a dedicated graphics-card should think about their PCs instead of blaming a game-developer.

Even my mini-ITX system running an Atom 330 with onboard ION-graphics (GF9400) allready has ShaderModel 4.0 so there's no reason, why anything older then 3.0 should be supported anymore.

CCP should investing more time in porting Eve to a newer game engine, then messing around tweaking their dated, 8 or 9 year old dinosaur.....

lol, how can you NOT have Shader 3.0-capable PC....YOU PLAY VIDEO GAMES FOR CHRIST'S SAKE.

Really getting tired of games looking like crap because they want it to run on a machine that's as powerful as my HTC Eris.

Oh, and to those who say they'll quit if their [15yr old] rigs can't run EVE; can i haz ur stuf?

That "dinosaur" performs better than most of the crap engines out there, right now, primarily because they continue tweaking and improving upon it.

Glad to see them upgrading their requirements, though. Been a long time coming.

The only thing within their game-engine they haven't re-done during the last 7 years is the avatars, and those get changed and upgraded to a new engine now aswell in November.

You've got no clue apparently, so you might wanna read up on the game-development of EvE first.

Oh dear poor guy does he not realise that the graphivs engine is a year old right now due to its modular nature its easy to tweak bits of it when needed and even replace entirely as was done last year i belive.

Nvida 8800GTX which supports shader model 3 so im ok not that im not toying with the idea of getting an upgrade....not that its needed but its something i want to do.

Bro, CCP minimum requirements are the same as most MMOs and they have upgrated their engine once already, about 2 years ago. As for getting the latest in graphics into MMOs, look at what happened to APB and what is happening to Final Fantasy... Nah, CCP is doing it right and it shows. Game looks good enough, it's stable and they are fixing stuff.

SM3 video cards are like 6/7 years old already, they are 5 generations behind current video cards. If you can't be assed to keep your computer in this millenia developers shouldn't be assed to support you.

They said that SM 3.0 would be the minimum back when they launched Apocrypha and dropped the classic client. Due to a large outcry from mainly laptop owners they changed it to SM2.0 but said that eventually SM 3.0 would be required. (This is mainly due to the tech behind Incarna requiring SM 3.0.)

Actually this happens 1.5 years later than originally announced: I can totally run that on my amiga

I was going to run EVE on my toaster/hamster-powered "computer". Now I guess I can't do that. Sigh.

    DONT PANIC

    Quote from EVE Online Article:

    "So what does that mean?

Simply put it means that to run EVE you'll have to have Nvidia GeForce series 6 or higher cards. Ati Radeon X1300 (Radeon R520 chips) or higher or Intel GMA X3000 or higher or Intel G965 or higher. These are series of cards that were first published in 2004-2005 and we will therefore continue supporting graphics cards over half a decade old."

I checked NCIX.com where I buy parts and you can get video cards that beat that for $25 to $30! If it is a problem, stop playing for a couple of months and buy a card to hold you over until you can afford a better system.

  • ShizaxxxShizaxxx Member Posts: 86

Yay, my graphic card supports it, and it's 5 years old!!

I hope no one is complaining about this requirement being too high. Lol..

  • mistaheadmistahead Member Posts: 1

Step one - Buy the cheapest, most woefully poor ex-corporate PC with WinXP from your local dodgy reconditioner.

Step two - Skip the McNuggets and popcorn chicken for one night and buy a second hand SM3.0 card with the money you've just saved.

Step three - Stop being a whining malcontent BEFORE logging back into an MMO, this one is VERY important.

Step four - Play the game.

Looks like I'm screwed, lol. ah well I just got back into console gaming so i haven't been on EVE that much anyway, I'll probably upgrade when I can afford it.
