FF14 as compares to FF11?

HikaruuHikaruu Member CommonPosts: 103

still debating on whether I want to get FF14 or not.  I played FF11 back in the day, went back to it and was almost dead. I enjoyed playing (when i could actually find a party) and thought the storyline was pretty decent.

Just wondering as to other people's thoughts on whether or not it's better than FF11 (please not just better or worse, I'd like opinions on combat, story, professions, etc and whats better or worse about them).

I think it would be unfair to say if FFXI is better than FFXIV at this point, since it has many more years on our newest MMO.  However from a gameplay point of view it seems to play and gives you the feel of FFXI.  Problem is there is such a mixed opinion on this game, you'll really need to try it out for yourself.

Terewyn is correct, there has to be an update somewherein the making....

I just miss small things, like player interaction, mog houses, and auction houses...

So I will give them a month to make this happen... before I bash them...

    God help them...

To be honest, you're asking a pretty broad question here and as you can see - this forum is overflowing with opinions on the subject.  I'd suggest reading a bit here, then checking a few fansite forums such as FFXIVcore, Eorzeapedia and so on to get an even better idea.

To add a quick note; previously enjoying FFXI seems to have only some effect as to whether or not you'll enjoy XIV.  Plenty who loved XI hate XIV, and plenty who never played XI love XIV.  The only major difference between having played FFXI is that many get a sense of nostalgia when getting into FFXIV, but beyond that pretty much depends on how much you allow it to affect you.  The games are quite different aside from races and music.

For those of you comparing FFXI and FFXIV, here are some facts for your consideration:

    (1) NA release of FFXI was ONE YEAR + EXPANSION PACK, later than JP release.

    (2) There was NO auction house or mailing system in FFXI when it released in Japan.

    (3) Many of the things in FFXI came after the JP release.

If you want a fair comparison, compare JP FFXI release with Worldwide FFXIV release.

Otherwise, you're comparing apples and oranges without a proper context.

Nobody is saying for you to pay for a year's worth of adjustments and content updates, but it's not fair to compare the games at completely different points in development.

As for me, I played FFXI at the start of NA release.  I saw the game grow and change.  I love the new classes and expansions.  In the end, there was so much stuff to do "end game" that you could never finish it.

The same will happen with FFXIV.  Most people won't stick around to see it, which is perfectly fine, most didnt' try or experience FFXI either.

History repeating itself in good and bad ways if you ask me.  More good than bad for me.

Even I would agree that FFXIV will require considerable refinement before it achieves the current overall entertainment potential FFXI.  It's not a phenominon unique to FFXIV, a MMORPG freshly released will be trumped by an MMORPG that has had 7 years of refinement any day.

However, simultaniously, I don't find it to be a very good comparison.  As is often the case when a company makes an MMORPG to succeed their previously MMORPG, the actual core focus of the game is much different because they don't want to pull too many of their customers away from the original MMORPG.  EverQuest and EverQuest 2 have very little to do with eachother, and the same could be said for Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV.

I have to agree with you. I gave FFXI a try and hated the whole combat system and the lack of character/skill progress at the early stages of the game. With that, starting from scratch early 2008 was kinda too late for me to "catch up" with the other players. Though FFXI was pretty populated, I felt alone because the newbee area's were pretty deserted :(

Then FFXIV... I played CB and was in doubt, and because of that I didn't participate in OB. The doubt was because of a couple of things I found... Leves quests not working or bigged like hell, the server crashing a lot, making it somewhat important to test anyway, and (most importantly), the CB community was probably one of the worse I came across during a beta :(

I played FFXI a couple months after JP release and honestly they pretty much play the same way. I think the only real diff outside the force partying  is that this time around a lot of fans are not as forgiving as they were in 02.

You can switch jobs but this time around you can do it without having to enter your home. You can also change professions as well, and I think there is no cap on it so you can have them all to cap. Story is the same pretty much except an 8 year overhaul. Combat is dumbed down to hitting 1 1 1 til a mob dies. Nothing satressful like it was in FFXI.

In ffxi i sorta felt like I always had a goal I was working on, and not crafting, crafting was something I did in my spare time.

I started in Sandoria. Soloed to 10, well I was a healer so I soloed to 9. Went to the Dunes and leveled to 20. Tthen on to Juneau for the choco quest...yay now we ride.  Then to the zone below Juneau to kill crabs...then the Crawlers Nest and so forth and so on.

All the while crafting, fishing, questing, and doing the rank missions with guildies.  Rank 5 w00t...ride the airship to the Jungle...all the while doing the expansion quests and such.

The crafters always had money...I was almost to the cap in clothcraft when I quit and by buying items in the AH and crafting them into better, more expensive, gear I did ok. Not sure if the crafters will have it the same in IV.

I remember going on level up parties cuz you just couldn't click on it in the attribute screen to level it up...you had to actually use it to get good at it. That's all changed. Another unique feature wasn't carried over.  Now it's like all the other games out there.  You level up your attributes by clicking on them.

Now in FFXIV crafting is a job. So everywhere you go ppl are crafting. There are quests for each craft. They give you the materials you need and the number items you need to make.  You get good skillups doing the quests and exp too. So you can ding by just crafting.  Everyone seems to craft in a few popular spots. Lotta ppl craft at the crystals, which is where the npc's are that you turn in the quest items.  You can do 4 crafting quests per reset period, and the quests are somewhat repeatable. Then change as you level up I think, but so far I've been making the same things for the same npcs.

In ffxi we got quests from random npc's around the game. In IV you get the quests from the quest agent intown.  So there's alotta action around those npcs. You can get like 4 of em per reset period and they also are repeatable and have nothing to do with the storyline. Those quests are always kill X amount of some mob. You activate the quest at the crystal, the same crystal where the crafting quest turnin npcs are located.  Which is also the crystal you pop at if you die.  Which is also the crystal you pop at if you port. So yeah, lotta traffic there.

You get a story line quest at level 1, then again at 20. I dunno what happens after that cuz I'm only an 18. Guess that takes the place of the rank missions in XI. Kinda.  I'm sure the higher you get the better the storyline quests are.

And that's what you do...get your leve quests for the day...decide what order you're gonna do em in....and start working thru your 8 quests....solo or in a group.

As you level your craft you'll begin to be able to make gear for yourself and your guildies.  Because there's no AH or mail system the guild chat is dominated with talk about items. Where to farm them, who has any, who needs what, and so on. Not very social, but fun.  So off you go to get your mats. By clicking on hundreds or sellers in the market place, farming them, or by chatting with guildies and making the trade. Cux there's no mail system yet so you gotta meet face to face.

In ffxi when you cast a spell your char sorta looked like she was casting a spell then the graphic sorta looked like what you were casting.  In ffxiv the graphic sorta looks the same for all the spells just the color of the swirly changes color....and graphic when it hits is a lot less dramatic then it was in ffxi. So the high dollar graphics card I had to buy was strictly for scenery detail I guess.

To change jobs all you have to do is switch weapons and tadah...you're that job.  No more having to deal with the mog house. Even though it was a nice quiet place to craft in XI and no more dealing with the mog safe either. In ffxi you had to go back to your safe to get gear and weapons when you changed jobs.  Now its way easier...you just carry everything with you. Way better.

In ffxi if you crafted you had mules, I had 6 of em...lol.  Not so in IV, no need for mules...cuz there's no mail system....and besides there's not multiple AH's to camp.  So now you can spend way more time doing important things.  Like searching thru bazaars looking for item you need to buy... traveling across the map to trade em from a guildie....or go farm them yourself.

Some say they don't have a mail system or AH cuz they're saving a ton of money on server space.  Some say they changed the UI because...well I have no idea why they did that.  Some say IV is better, some say XI was better.

I dunno...I loved ffxi.  Seems to me they changed some of the things that made ffxi unique. Like the skillup system that relied on you working to skill up, not just clicking a button.  Another thing that was unique about ffxi was the KB only UI.  I loved driving my char with one hand and casting with the other. Now I use the mouse and the W key...ala WoW style...they used the arrow keys to scroll thru the menues...so that sux, but no biggie. I'm getting used to it but still.  They also changed transportation system...now anyone can tele. You use anima to port. They start you off with 99 and each time you port you use some. Ports so far seem to cost 4 anima and returns cost 2. The anima regens at a slow rate....like 1 per 4 hours...or 16 1/2 days to regen it all.  I'm a mage...so yeah, I miss having warp... ^^

I'm sure there's a ton more changes...but thats all that popped im my head.

IV is a great game...just different is all and everyone had their own ideas what's better or worse. I wish they had kept all the things that made XI unique and improved on all the things that were wrong with it...but improving is all in the eye of the beholder...so maybe you'll think IV is better...I hope you do ^^
