    Hater my ass.

So I drive an hour and a half from my small town home to reach the nearest Best Buy,

Drop $75 bucks on the game,

    Drive home,

    Anxiously install it,

Try to like it for a week,

Boy, I sure had it out for this game to invest that kind of time and money into just destroying it. What we really have here is a situation where a game was so insulting to me that it drove me onto this message board (which I read often) to make a post warning other players away from this game. It's that bad that it has driven me, a 32 year old professional who works for a marketing company. Yes, I AM the regular guy - trust me.

If you read everything you know where to go. Also the copy and paste terrain is not as noticeable as people would like to make us think. Finally this game is different from most MMOs out there in that it believes its player base is smart enough to figure it out.

Every game should have a tutorial to teach you the basics apparently this game doesn't even do that.

I'm kinda happy that everyone who cant figure out these things themselves go back to WoW, or whatever child mmo they come from.

FFXIV actualy has a soital aspect to the gameplay, where as WoW has been on the plath to becoming a singleplayer game for the past 2 years. They just need to add Raids and Arenas to LFG to do it.

When the servers start to shut down (merge) and the Dev team gets put on maintenance mode you will care, a lot.

EvE (a game far more complex and rewarding) is where I am going back to; a complex game that teaches the player the basic meaning, and controls, to the game.

Edit - You guys should listen very closely to what the OP is saying as it is the very reason me, and the three buds I got to join, are not planning on continuing our time (even though we shelled out $150) with this game as it currently is.

I predict a mass cancelation of subs after the free 30 days ends.......I've been playing since the sept 22 and this game still fails to be fun to me. i'd say 2/10 people who play this game like it.

It's not that this game is too hard, this game isn't any harder or challenging than other MMO's on the market by any means. It  just isn't any good.....I'm sorry

Sadly to say, I agree with you. I am so frustrated with this game, I haven't played FFXI before because It was too expensive in my country and now that im here in the US and have a job, I wanted to play this game. But now that I have tried this game, I am so dissappointed. The crafting is so slow, the UI is so terrible, etc.. I am not against the game, I just want to voice out my frustration towards the game that I waited for so long. My only hope now is to wait for SE's "Wait for 3 weeks to review the game", it's sounds like they have a "Miracle" Patch coming so that's what I am hoping for, but if not when my free 30days end, I will cancel my sub before that. So sorry SE!

I tell my story as a warning to anyone else out there who might think the game will "have to be OK cause it's a big company and a huge name". Don't fool yourself. I feel compelled to tell this story, and this is the first time I have ever made a post like this. That's how much rage I have against this game right now. I represent your standard MMO market. A regular joe looking for a good MMO to play when I get home from work. What market did they make this game for? It is completely maddening! Noone is going to play this for more than a few weeks. It's a complete cluster - nothing makes sense, everything is slow, there's no instructions at all, no tutorials - nothing! THIS GAME SUCKS - DON'T BLOW 75 BUCKS LIKE I DID. Please, for the industry, don't buy this scam of a game.

It stopped being a "regular guy's review" about here.  Sorry you didn't like the game, but getting up on your soap box demanding that all of us who do like the game have fallen for a scam is way over the line.  Final Fantasy XI wasn't for everyone, it demanded their users be willing to adapt a bit.  The same thing goes for Final Fantasy XIV.  If you're not willing to do that, this doesn't make it a scam, it just means you bought the wrong game for you.

So who is this game for then? Final Fantasy fans? I'm a HUGE Final Fantasy fan and I think it's terrible. Fans of FFXI? I played that for 3 years and loved it. Japanese/Asian players? Considering the 1.5/5 rating it seems to be getting on every site, the Japanese would like to kindly disagree with you. Who is this niche of game players?

A convoluted UI and absolutely 0 tutorial does not add a level of difficulty or make a game any more harcore then any other. It makes the game designers lazy. It's quite obvious to anyone that plays this game for more then a day that the game is made to be a console game, and PC was thrown in there to grab some more money up. Dubbing this "an added level of difficulty" or "no hand holding" or "hardcore" is like me telling you to sort M&Ms by color with your eyelids. It can be done, but why the hell would you do it that way when there are many more easily accesible ways to do it?

Now we get to the part about needing player made gear to get any better. This alone would be an actual plus to me, as I often neglect my professions. But say you need a material you don't have. Well, there's no worldwide chat channel. No problem, I'll go to the auction house....oh wait. There isn't one. So you're left to farm for whatever it is you need, or ask each person one by one. Terrible design.

Now onto the running narrative. The story quests are fun-ish. The leves? Not so much. First off, there's only 8 to do every 2 days. Second, it's the same randomly generated crap every 2 days. Go here, kill x number of y mob, come back. Boring. After these 8 thrilling quests are over, you can either grind, sit and tell stories about how this game could be better with other people who are waiting for their 48 hours to be over, or log off and play a better game. This is hardly the alive and vibrant world I normally expect from SE. This is grinding without even TRYING to cover that it's grinding.

I won't get into the cut and paste environments, the terrible skill up process the fact that there is tremendous UI lag while in groups and even solo. The game is broken. The sooner those of you who vehemently deny that fact admit it, the sooner you'll stop getting told over and over that your game isn't all sunshine and farts.

    LMAO!! You nailed it.

Ever have a message with something you disagree with, but found it so full of overblown exaggeration that you felt it would be too much work?  This was one of those posts.  For example:

    • "Considering the 1.5/5 rating it seems to be getting on every site, the Japanese would like to kindly disagree with  you." - We had a thread from one site, one, where the Japanese players had rated it 1.5.  Later on in that same thread, we had a post from other sites where it was really more like it'd see on Amazon or Metacritic right now, about a middling score with slightly under half the players scoring it highly, slightly over half the players scoring it lowly, and very few in the middle.

    • Half the people rating it lowly is a bit of an understatement. People are rating it '0'

    • "A convoluted UI"- It's only an opinion that the UI is convoluted, I actually find the UI to be quite slick.  The GUI lag, on the other hand, is something less forgivable, but "convoluted" isn't the right word for it.

    • Glad you like the UI, I think it feels like a console game, and not a computer game. A bad console game at that.

    • "absolutely 0 tutorial" - You've got a combat tutorial at the start of the game.  It's a bit of trial by fire, sure, but the mobs are just sitting around waiting for oyu to figure out how to target something and hit the attack button.  Then you've got a combat level tutorial given to you when you first arrive at the first camp.  Tutorials for mining, gathering, fishing built into some of the starting leves.  There could have been far more tutorials, sure, but that's still greater than "absolutely zero."

    • The tutorial part of the game is probably the best part. It confuses you to the point where you might think the game is intriguing, until you find out how to do something, and the experience is slow, laggy, and not very entertaining. Feels like more of a cover-up to get you playing, until you find out that it's not really a great game.

    • "Dubbing this 'an added level of difficulty' or 'no hand holding' or 'hardcore' is like me telling you to sort M&Ms by color with your eyelids." - Just because you put something in a funny-sounding analogy doesn't mean it's true... or even makes any sense.

    • I agree with your statement, but that is one funny visual. Some fat guy unable to move his arms and only wants to eat green M&M's, so he puts his head to the table to sort M&M's, not with his tongue, because his tongue can't reach those tasty little snacks, but with his eyelids. So, with great effort he gets them sorted out, and then realizes that they aren't the delicious M&M's but some knockoff Walmart brand. In the agony he screams in discontent, because he bought the wrong brand of sweet candied covered chocolate candies, and regrets his purchase.

And so on.  That's about 33% through the message, but I really don't feel like it'll do me any good to go on.  It's like, if the guy's that determined to mke the game sound bad, my finest efforts would be tossing a pebble in the ocean.

If you really like the game, why are you spending your time defending it, rather than playing it? Or are you waiting on your guildleve cooldowns for the next two days?

Weeee yet another review from a person who does believe his opinions reflect the opinions of everyone and therefore he can state a review of something which he didn't even bother to understand.

Well we just cant get enough of this can we now?

Most of this so called reviews r the same the ppls writing them didn't understand how to do something right away got frustrated and afterwords lost the objective view of things.

So u had a hard time going in Active mode?? I mean really?? LOL ok lemme ask u did u read the manual or bother checking the Key bindings for the game before u started playing?? No u did not?? Oh well lemme guess u expected u start the game and since u r such an awesome MMO Veteran u dont have to read anything right?? Yeah of course u did and than there was this nasty surprise and the Game was not an exact clone of all other games and u didn't know what to do...but instead of logging out and read the Manual so even players like u can get a easy start u stayed logged in with this I have to hate view u got after nothing worked like u though it has to and than u come here and give us an Objective review....like i said we cant get enough of this lol.

Now before u all start hating my post i do not say its all peachy in 14 its not as a matter of fact it has some probs which still has to be solved. I still have a blast of time playing the game all i really mean is dont post an review of something u didn't even try to understand .

You wouldn't give your new TV a bad review only course u failed to read the Manual and therefore did not understand how to use it would u??Well maybe u would....

I just bought a TV actually, and I love it. Sharp Aquos. The power button is labeled Power - how about that! I would have really loved the TV had they come up with some weird, convoluted name for the power button and not explained in the manual what it was - lets say instead of Power they had called it Outleve.

The switch to active mode button is labeled as such in the Key bindings fancy isn't it??

Fact is in no MMO u actually hit a button on your keyboard/mouse which is labeled with the action it would trigger in the game u just failed to inform u  about the controls in the game and than complained about it.

Maybe u do not like the controls ok that's your opinion and yet has nothing to do with u just plain failing to use the Controls properly.

The game has problems but ppls not capable or willing to inform themselves via Manuals how to play the game just shouldn't count as a prob the game has.

I still dont understand how u thought u might be fit to write a review if u were not even able to understand the Basics of the game at best call it your opinion but than not A opinion from a regular guy no call it in opinion from a guy who refused to read the manual.

All this complain about the game seriously guys most of them are just your fault no matter if u wanna see it or not why cant u complain about more important facts??

Like the lack of the Agility skill i mean come on that's a huge flaw right there and nothing you can do could help with that things like that r reasonable complains.

But maybe its just me maybe i am wrong after all there r sooo many of this so called reviews on this side alone maybe i am wrong i mean if so many ppls say the same they sure have to be right dont they......

I have a Sharp Aquos that I love as well, though I bought mine 3.5 years ago but it is still nice. In any case, I would of had the same exact experience as you but I read about the game before hand and watched some videos showing a new character being created. Then I consciously decided I was going to buy it anyways and take the game with all it's faults because I wanted to experience something completely different and so far it's been fun.

I agree you should warn people to do their research before they buy a product, especially a CE (which was just plain silly and a 'regular guy' would never do that, only hardcore people pay $25 extra blindly), because your experience was probably very real but at the same time I don't remotely feel sorry for you or anyone else that doesn't spend their money a little more wisely.

... RAWR, I'm an impulse buyer yet I don't take responsibility for my impulses! -- Sorry for your loss good sir, hope you won't make the same mistakes in the future.

Yea, I can see how there are still some keynesian economist out there .. didn't that die under Reaganomics?  Point really is: you can like what you want but the truth of the matter is what only counts.   I love the graphics, plus I making use of the dandy book I got from the collector edition but the sad fact is we are going to watch another mmo fail.

It kind of pisses me off really, what is going on? Wait maybe there is more money making a failed games then keeping a good one going.  I was enjoying APB when that annoying voice in my head keep saying "I give this game a year at most before it closes"  How many months did it turn out? pfft, I just couldn't play after the second month d/t the waste your time in a dead game factor took over.

Will FFXIV fail? Dunno but it's not going to be successful.  Maybe they are just messing with us PC users and the real version is due when the PS3 version comes out.  One can only hope..

  • SpeedhaakSpeedhaak Member UncommonPosts: 296

Bottom line, when all is said and done, FF XIV has some atrocious design decisions and failed on numerous occasions to take into account community feed-back. A lot of people are getting confused with why so many people are complaining about FF XIV, and language barriers aside I can guarantee you that most people are just bamboozled by it's complete lack of direction. Nothing is intuitive. Nobody's saying you have to copy WoW to be successful, there's nothing wrong with being different, so long as you follow some basic rules of the genre. Something FF XIV failed on all accounts.

For me personally though, the most irritating issue is that here we are, six years later and nothing has come even remotely close to beating WoW, both in terms of financial and critical success, and game design. I'm starting to think that as long as people on boards like these defend games like FF XIV then developers will continue - and happily at that - to dish out sub-par grind fests for blind, faith-devoted fans to swallow whole,. We have a responsibility as consumers to demand finished and polished products. I never could understand why some people settle for less.

I've been playing the MMO "game" for a long time now - I've seen em come and go. Another thread on here mentioned free to play - I really think the future of the genre is in F2P. I don't mind paying 15 bucks a month, but I usually on run one game at a time. I think most consumers do the same.

Here's the list of games I have bought and canceled: UO, EQ1, EQ2, Anarchy Online (went F2P), DAOC, SWG, Warhammer, Asheron's Call 2 (game is gone now), Tabula Rasa (game is gone now), Uru Ages of Myst, Shadowbane, Age of Conan, D&D online (F2p Now), Lotro (lifetime sub to this one),  Eve, Aion, Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV, and a few more. Currently I'm subbed to WoW.

Of those games, I would love to log in and tool around with UO, EQ1, EQ2 (I understand it recently went F2P, wanna check it out), DAOC, SWG, Warhammer, Conan, Aion, FFXI. I bought these games, but the companies have zero money making potential off me as a customer because I will not resub to these games. Unless you're WoW, you gotta pull your head out of the clouds and get rid of the monthly fee. These games listed - they won't even let me into the virtual "store" - I have no avenue to spend money with them because I have to sub to one game (I do have a house payment).

Any chance there is going to be some formal letter of appology to the paying customers? Vanguard had one and it was in seemingly far better condition at launch.

    I think that's a bit over dramatic.

Vanguard had missing textures, weirdness with invisable monsters, vanishign and appearing elsewhere, etc.

This game is far more polished than vanguard was at launch.

Hated the game too, I bought the game and got it on release day for standard version. Installed and set  up the account while installing the game. Got into char. creation and everything was great and went into the game. Played for two days, and at the end of the 2nd day I found myself uninstalling the game and renewing my wow account. It was the worst game I ever spent money on and I lost all faith in the final fantasy franchise.

If you're contemplating on buying this game, I pray that you don't. Don't waste your money, buy any other game but this or you''ll surely be kicking yourself later on. For me it was this or Fable 3, and now I hate myself for not pre-ordering Fable 3.

When that argument gets thrown around it amuzes me. What sort of a business model is that anyway.

Probably the same business model that makes car manufactures build minivans (0-60 in 136s?), or fast food burger joints serve salads (would you like fries with that?), or PC makers design $250 eMachines (1FPS FTW!).

I played FFXI, I do not plan on playing FFXIV, though I wholly support any developers dream to *not* build the next watered down piece of trash that builds upon the lowest common denominator in order to increase it's market share.

If Burger King stopped frying hamburger patties and just sold you lettuce on a bun, just to make the vegans happy, you'd have the fast food equivalent of WoW. If they then managed to make the non-vegans believe these were the best fucking hamburgers ever (note, no meat) and complain when every other restaurant was still serving beef, well, then you'd have what Blizzard did to the fantasy MMO genre.
