There are times that Final Fantasy 14 is SO frustrating that I have to log off and spend some time doing other things. I end up doing crazy things like extra housework, spending time with my family, and watching some TV show I'd normally skip out on. And after a bit, I can log back on and get back to whatever I was doing. The funny thing is that it doesn't bother me. I have to take a step back and realize its just a game. And I love it.
I also realize what that same frustration is doing to the people who weren't prepared for what they were getting themselves into. I played FFXI a bit and I knew that asian style games are more grindy than the average NA style MMO. I watch and I laugh as people talk about the game being too hard or too grindy. I don't find it to be either. When something gets tedious, I go do something else. I have a nice rotation of classes going with lancer, botany, cularian, and alchemy (mostly to help with making supplies for cularian). When I'm doing something grindy, I just casually talk to people on Skype or on my LS's vent server.
I'm amused by the number of people who are really uninformed about some of the game mechanics. I'm amused that they want instructions on how to do this or that... and yet, having worked in retail I know how many people do NOT actually read instructions on anythign they buy. Do you know how many people haven't figured out how to format their SD cards on their cameras or delete pictures off the card? Do you know how many people are too damn stupid to load minutes onto their own prepaid phones? Even if SE provided instructions for how things worked, I doubt the average person would read them anyways. And frankly, I like the fact I have to learn how to do something by trying different ways and methods until I find the right one. It makes me feel like I did something.
Those are the same players I used to take gold from in pre-BC WoW because they said a paladin couldn't tank this or that or main-heal this or that. I'd bet them I could... and I bought a friend's epic mount with the winnings. These are the players that want to be lead around by the nose and told what to do. These are the players who say, "This does this and that's all it does." They can't think outside the box.
And then my frustration leads to refreshment as I watch all of these whiners walk away from Final Fantasy XIV. Go, please. I don't want you in the game I'm paying to play anyways. I want players who want to learn, players who want to work outside the normal paradigm of MMO gaming.
Does FFXIV have problems? Sure it does. I'm looking forward to when SE implements the new ward system so I don't have to go through all the wards to find something (granted, I only go through around 5). Then again, I hear people complain about that and I laugh. Whenever a member of my LS finds something he heard someone needs, they ask if they should buy it for them. Whenever they find a deal that SOMEONE might need, they mention it on Vent AND LS-chat to see if someone wants it.
I guess I like FFXIV because if you aren't the type to be involved in a community in a friendly way, you aren't going to go very far... And its refreshing.

I often mention how you'll dislike FFXIV if you enter into the game with the wrong set of expectations. See the OP's post here? Those are the right expectations to have.
So, you're saying it's a chatroom with pretty things to look at that get boring?
OP what level are you? because game shows its ugly face past lvl 20. i was also gushing and blushing when i was only lvl 10.
Now i am standing naked with my lvl 27 armor on retainer for last 2 days hoping for someone to fix it and i can go back to killing squirrels and some more crabs. NPC can't repair my jewellery and to repair armor from NPC costs me close to 300K gils.
If you're paying 300k gil for your repairs, I think you can afford to put your armor up on your retainer under "seeking repairs" at a price juicy enough to attract player craftsmen to do it. It doesn't take much, just enough that they'd be able to cover the cost of the materials plus a little more for time and effort. Trickier is to actually find where the armorer/blacksmith can be found, hopefully the improvement to the wards coming next patch will make that easier to do.
Granted, if you're wearing level 27 armor at rank 10... you don't want to do that, it'll likely give oyu worse stats than level 7 armor would. "Optimal rank" isn't just for show.
A post which is basically a snarky, grossly misinterpretive one-liner coming from a 4-star guy makes me wonder if the star system on this forum works in inverse.
Prime example of why SE stated so many times you need to CRAFT your gear or have a guild that can with mats you harvest. Buying your gear gets you no where when you don't have money or the mats to repair it.
So SE is forcing everyone to craft? a game which is all about 'you can do whetever you like'. I don't think so. This is just one of the many tactics to slow down game progressin because past lvl 30 there is hardly any content. And yes my LS gathers and craft but its silly to expect them to leave everything for me to repair my items every 2 to 3 hrs. yes that is how fast your weapon and gear breaks down at higher levels.
That is the case with any game surely.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
Bronze set, lols. Ah, yes. Wearing gear beyond your level is wonderful, no?
I don't know how the crafting community has evolved on your server but if I were to stand in Limsa Lominsa for a few minutes advertising for repairs of that high a level then I'd get a response pretty quick. It's possible that there aren't too many high-level crafters about, though; the game is still young and you're wearing some high-ish level stuff.
Maybe stick with gear closer to your level (unless you are rank 27ish, then.. I'll simply rescind my comment there?) to make repairs easier. I'm 22 with level 15-23 rank suggested gear and repairs for me are cheap from the NPC. Only jewelry requires repairs from players and that's easy enough.. I can do it myself if I don't mind failing 50% of the time.
Objectivity is delivered with a lack of personality made for the mainstream but never used for the mainstream.
I am rank 29 thanks for your concern but i don't find the idea of running back to city every 2 to 3 hours for gear repair fun. Especially when you are in group grinding and you have to stop only because your healer or tank has to get items repaired. To make things worse you have to run all the way because anema is a luxury one can not afford on regular basis. Not eveyone likes to craft in game, some of us are pure DOW classes.
I have repaired my armor often shouting in chat but it doen't work everytime especially when it take shit load of clicks to take everything off and put it back again twice or three times a day. Easier said then done buddy.
I have to wonder if maybe you're telling us of your experiences in beta, because release-state they reduced the frequency of repairs considerably. Gear doesn't break down every 2-3 hours anymore.
Although, I really can't promise this isn't the case because I sure haven't done any rank 29 grinding, as I'm developing my character to ba generalist. I haven't seen many rank 20+ people at all in the game right now because the Fatigue system will limit their ability to get that high in a job in the mere 2-3 weeks the game has been out.
I think it's working fine. We all know why you don't have any stars.
As far as the OP, what level are you?
He who keeps his cool best wins.
i would say "can i have your stuff" but you haven't gotten anywhere to give stuff lol.
Nope it isn't reduced. Weapons break down even faster compared to armor. Unless you want to avoid tougher mobs and want to gind solo on easier ones but then again SP gain is usless at my lvl from easier mobs. I know casters and archers whose weapons durability drop down to 75% in less then an hour.
I dont think this game was designed for you to pick a combat class and stick to it. It was designed for you to do a little bit of everything. Alot of the people I see complaining are the ones that picked a combat class and play only it trying to be cool and race it to max level. I would guess after the game matures a bit it will be easier to get repairs and such if you want to play combat only. In my opinion, I dont even think the combat is the best part of the game. I have done very little of it. I think my highest combat class is level 8.
You have your own play style and i have my own. And yes i have leveled two combat classes to lvl 20 but that's it for me. there is only so much grind i can tolerate so i am sticking to my Glad. please don't tell me i am playing wrong because i am doing exactly what SE expects me to do. I am grouping up and doing leves and grinding mobs. If they don't have enough content past lvl 30 and they want to slow down my progression they should just take away my ability to log in instead of implementing stupid ideas like gear repair.
You think crafting is awesome i find it aweful. Combat is fun for me but am i saying that you are doing it all wrong?
The problem with this game right now is, as another poster implied already, you can't really "do whatever you want". Crafters control everything in the game. You can solely be a crafter with zero need to ever get into combat, and can just buy shards off of retainers or mine for them yourself. But the same isn't true for DoW classes; you need to rely on crafters or level several crafts yourself to get anything done, and its just more of a timesink.
Repairs ARE needed every couple hours in this game for your weapon once you get to higher levels. It's to the point where I either need to level goldmithing, blacksmithing, armorer and woodcraft to 20+ to be able to repair my own weapons and gear for a 25 gladiator, or I buy multiple copies of the same weapon (which I've already done) just so I can stay in the field. Having to run back and forth to town every 2 hours, shouting for repairs is ridiculous.
Until either repairs are made easier/cheaper or weapon degradation is severely reduced, I won't be resubbing to Final Craftasy XIV. I'll probably check it out again once the PS3 version releases, but by that point better games on the horizon will have released already.
Soooo....
Now the standard for quality gaming is one that makes you log off in frustration and not play it?
Granted, I loved games in the past that I'd get so involved in that I'd do the same (ragequits ftw! not permanently quitting, though), but not over the type of thing the OP describes. It's not as if you've fought some incredibly difficult encounter, failed, and lost anything significant at which point you decide enough is enough. Nope, you're logging off in frustration with the game's systems, or out of boredom. On top of that, you seem to have joined the XIV 'niche' here in enjoying the bouqet of your own flatulence. Furthermore, rather than speak of any of the game's actual merits, the entire OP is a down-the-nose pile of condescension as he revels in his own glory for having stuck something out that other people refuse to tolerate all the while trying to mask his poor attitude by saying something of the game's "friendly community". If your ilk on these forums are any representation of the game's community, I believe everyone else will be thrilled not to have you in their game, either.
Honestly, there's nothing wrong with shutting down a game to take care of chores, spend time with your family, or keep up with your favorite TV show. The thing is; plenty of people manage to do those things while actually not getting so pissed at the game they're playing as to just log off out of frustration, forcing them to do so as an alternative to otherwise enjoying their game. Instead, satisfied with the fun they've had, they log off and take care of life's necessities and look forward to getting back for more fun when time allows. That frustration-based logouts due to insubstantial issues should be viewed here as some sort of 'hidden benefit' of the game has got to be the worst reason as justification for liking it that I've seen yet. I mean, that top's our resident fanboi's usual tirades, and he's downright delusional.
Seriously, people wonder why they're called masochists for liking the game? At least folks who are into pain accept that they're not normal or average by any stretch of the imagination (and no, I'm not saying everyone who enjoys the game is a masochist).

After I've read your post I'm still left wondering (because it isn't stated) what makes you ragequit?
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.
Hmm, the weapon's not too hard to handle, it's just one repair as opposed to several repairs for armor/ect.
Funny enough, it actually sounds kind of exciting to me to have a game that may actually require your party bring someone capable of doing repairs on your gear to the field. More realistic and interesting than the alternative. I guess this kind of mindset is what makes a person like FFXIV.
Timesink =/ Exciting
Reparing a weapon every two hours =/ Interesting
Realism at the expense of fun gameplay is lame.
