Yup - you spawn in on one side and run to the other, although you may not really want to do that as the game world is huge and it could take you a long time to run there.
Its a military simulation, not a massive shoebox shooter. If you think you can just run into the fight and be uber, have fun getting killed ALOT. Its deeper than a shotter, because its an inf sim, tank sim, air sim, and naval sim, all in one game. Strategy is wicked important in this game.
More so than any other WWII-themed MMOLG ever, WWIIOL requires you to think and act tactically like a real soldier...and not John Rambo, either. Success and even survival is all about organization and small-unit tactical teamwork in WWIIOL.
The weapons are realistically modeled, which makes them very unequal. Many individual weapons are not balanced at all. You have to overcome whatever disadvantages that causes you, or die trying.
If you just want to shoot stuff, this is most definitely not the game for you. Shooters are designed to let you win, kill, dominate. In WWIIOL, you're fighting other players, and there's an excellent chance that they're organized and well-commanded. Most of them will know the exact strengths and limitations of their own weapons. Many of them will understand the strengths and limitations of your side's weapons, too. Some of them will have military experience, which is relevant because real-world tactics work, and real-world stupidity makes you dead.
WWIIOL is designed for (approximate) balance only at the overall level. The Rats have done nothing to make it easy for individual players to survive on the kill-or-be-killed WWIIOL battlefield, other than provide advice to use offline mode or the Training Server to learn basic operation of the weapons you'll start with; ask questions on Chat Channel 99; and start out by joining a mission, hooking up with an experienced player, and learning by watching them.
As it was a year ago i would have recomended you to subscibe on this game. But with the latest patch it has been ruined! Subscribe only if you like playing games where you are controlled by people not of you choise. If you like games where your options are limited this is a great game too.

Oh yes, take everything he says as the gospel because he has posted TWICE!!!!!
WW2ol is about teamwork. Large and Small scale operations that span units from the ground, see and air. Its a constantly shifting battlefield were you have to think to survive and be smart and patient and work with your bro's to get the job done. You won't find any other game that has as large of a battlefront, nor as large of battles going on 24/7.
If on the other hand your like Sirevil and you feel should be able to do anything you want wherever you want with no thought to how it affects your sides, supplies or ability to fight the battle then this game might not be for you.
Some explains on the kind of things he is referring to.
Starting at the very top of the High Command chain, the Commander in Chief and his subordinates have to manange your countries Research and Development of new vehicles. Determine what your overall supplies will be for the various branches under a tight budget which balances each sides mediocre equipment against the super equipment. Thus a low level tank is worth alot less then one of the best tanks. So your high command can either choose to produce more of the lesser tanks, or they can cut back on those and try to produce an adequate number of better ones. This results in every campaign being unique after the start, because you don't know what sort of equipment or how much of them you'll have until your HC does it. And its also helped or hindered by your ability to destroy enemy factories and protect your own.
Continuing with the HC, at the lower levels are Brigade Commanders and all his officers who help manage things. They take direction from the Higher Officers who are working together to come up with an overall battle plan. Mabye they want to try to push up the meuse river and cuty off the northern forces from the southern ones and make a bold move to capture vital cities right near a major artery of enemy AF's, or mabye they want to focus on capturing and securing all the islands before moving more east or west. They tell their officers what the plan is, give parts of the job to each of the Brigades involved and those leaders post Attack Objectives and missions which decide the course of action they will take to try to achieve the goals set by their superiors.
Now at the field level you have mission officers, or OIC's (Officers In Charge) which are often also the High Command players, but not always. They try to give some sense of direction and use Tactics in field to accomplish the objective. They will ask for Mobile Spawns placed near objectives, Request Paratroop jumps, have Tank columns formed and hopefully arriving on the time schedule they set so that they can cut through the defenses. Also it is not uncommon to see groups of players on a mission following a mission leader, someone who understands the plan and has good intel or tactics regarding how to accomplish it. If you work with them you tend to be alot more effective and its alot more fun as well.
But then there are the players who basically think they should be able to go anywhere and attack whatever they want. They don't see the point in communicating with others, all they care about is getting into the thick of it and killing stuff. While not always the case, alot of times they tend to run around alot like rambo and die miserably. Meanwhile others hold positions, call out intel and sightings, guard spawnable depots, and just generally listen to what their leaders and commanders are asking of them.
This is a team based game. You aren't forced to do anything you don't want to do. But if you think that communicating and working with others is not for you. If you can't stand the thought of having someone leading you in battle, and others who lead your whole Sides forces and make high level decisions which sometimes work and sometimes don't. Then this game is likely not for you. You can run around solo and kill stuff all you want. When you gain rank to post missions you can make missions to objectives which are not really supported by the team at the time. Nobody has the power to make you do anything you don't like to. But why on earth would you want to play a massive team based game like this were your strength is in your ability to function as a unit to win battles and the war, if you have absolutely no interest such things.
This is a war-sim and thus there has to be an element of Command and Control. Armies do not function well if they spend half their time debating amongst themselves what to be doing, and the other half of the time the ones who's plan didn't get voted in are bitching about how stupid it is we are going here instead of there. High Commands bring a level of control and direction to the game that most of the players either don't have the Time, Inclination, or Smarts to sit down and really think through from a whole-istic top down view. HC is for Strategists and Tacticians, who love to keep records and gather intel, they deal with orders and requests, they help others with problems and spend alot of time working on plans and discussing them amongst themselves. Some help manage forums and websites outside of the game which help in these things but are really not tied directly to the game. Meanwhile the rest of us just get in there join up with them and get to go kill stuff and try to help out by accomplishing their plans.
I really don't see what is so terribly wrong about HC's. Anyone can be in it, they need only to apply, and to follow the rules laid down for all who join those ranks. They have to be active and interested in team goals, not just their own. They take on alot more duties and spend alot more time thinking about and working on elements of this game which don't get them any points or status, all those things do is make the game for the rest of us run smoother, more coordinated, and be alot more fun for all.
Shame on them...
(But don't take my word for it, I've only served two tours as a HC officer, and plan to again when my schedule allows for it, go be one yourself and see if its for you. If not, thats cool you can still just be a soldier in the field. And you can always choose to ride out your tour from the place in the HC that is most suited to your liking, but its not easy, and its not about having status or giving orders to everyone you see. Its about working as a team and furthering the fun for all.)

Ok point taken, but you can't expect the dev's to move backwards. They introduce new elements to the game to move it forward. We need Brigades and Command if we plan to eventually have realistic maneuver warfare that supports brigades having supplies of equipment and the threat of stretching supply lines etc.
Its like RDP, sure in its current state its not the greatest part of the game. But imagine what it can become when/if they can give each branch its own RDP, and when we get train convoys and supply lines that can be interdicted it'll add more depth to the system.
Thats the thing, they can't do it all at once, and some parts have to be done first to see how it works so they can change and build the next parts. But just because its not fully functioning as everyone would like is no reason to give up on it, or worse yet to go back to the old, everything everywhere system. They have to move forward, and sometimes that means breaking old parts of the game, sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse, but its the only way to progress the systems. Most of them are just too complex to throw into the game completely and expect them to function exactly as intended, so they go in piece by piece and each one teach us all something new about the direction of the game.
Except I've seen 100+ people on teamspeak servers for sides alone, 30-40 on at a time in my squad alone. I've just come back, and I love 1.19 more than any previous version.
Go away. You don't play, you aren't part of the playerbase, hence no one has to listen to you.

If I had a buck for everytime I heard some drama queen claiming the end of this game is near, that droves of players were leaving it and it would die soon I could have bought one of those fancy new Nvidia cards for my computer.
I don't see dozens of planes fighting over towns all over the front everyday I play. I don't see armour columns and massive infantry fights, naval floatilla's, heck I wasn't part of the 30+ Bomber formation, with 20 or so Escorts that flew over to England last week. And the allies didn't launch their own last night which had 40 Bombers and 40+ Escorts either. Those things never happened... it's all a lie, it has to be, after all if the few trolls can't find the game to their liking then how is it possible anyone else could, its just not possible, so we must be lying when we say we say old veterans returning to the game now that its better, that alot of new recruits join up and stay around. All fiction I tell ya.
You see lot's of players comming to the game and i see a lot of squads deminish to nothing!
However, what i'm talking about isn't new, in fact we have seen before what happens when gamedivelopers only listen to them selves and a few cheerleaders!
Dark Ages of Camelot had a whole new expansion that totally ruined the game for long time players and newbies alike. They kinda took rank away from a 50 toon in the way they added new artifacts. This made a huge amount of accounts to close . I here they are opening up a new server without that expansion junk . I just hope the makers of this game see that and change soon . Took DAOC about a year.
This lesson CRS haven't learned jet, but they will!

-So true!
Also remember that the players that are HC have dayjobs as sanitarypersonal, bartenders, autoworkers, genetors etc. and very few are even military. Non have expirience of ww2 other then of movies. The result is no where near a simulation of WW2, how could it be whit a commander that fix sparkplugs in RL!
I agree with you Cerpas, try the demo and you will quickly see that the cheerleaders are puttin out false info about this now lousy game!

Battlefield 2? No thank you.
these players decide where you will fight
Well yes, sort of, they place the Attack Objectives to avoid attacks on towns that might be bad to attack from a strategical point of view (supply, adjacent enemy towns etc) but if you and 10 of your buddies or your squad are thinking about setting up an attack on a town (you can even ask for a suitable town to attack), just ask an HC officer for an Attack Objective.
how you will fight, what equipment is available (based on the rank of the HC officer)
Not true. HC officers place Attack Objectives and you can spawn whatever equipment you want assuming you have enough rank to do it. As for spending your money, yes try it yourself before you make up your mind. I'm glad I did or I'd still be stuck in the BF carousel. I hate bugs as well but most of them most of them are on the shortlist to fix.and while critical to some they don't hinder most people from having great fun.

There are many military and ex-military guys who play WW2OL and many players have a great interest in WW2, equipment etc and it shows in forum threads. Obviously this game doesn't suite everyone (like you guys) but you don't see me coming into BF2 forums and bashing it because of that or for all of its shortcomings since some actually like it, just like some like WW2OL.

Oh ecke you know full well that is not true.
How many AO's are available for each side? Maximum of 6.
How many players on each side on average in WW2OL? A couple of hundred, right?
AO's are designed to FORCE larger battles .... that's the stated intention of AO's in the first place. So you pay your money and fight where you are told to fight, simple as that.
And don't forget, once TOE comes in, you'll not only be told WHERE to fight, you'll be told WHAT you are allowed to spawn as well.
Kadesh, have you ever been in a squad? We ask for AO's and get them. HC will not place AO's on strategically retarded targets (attack a 2ab with 1 link) sort of things. Pick a viable target that has good supply, ask for AO = golden.

Just point to this fact because many refear to WWIIOL as it was a true WWII-sim which it's not. I have nothing against HC in general, they are victims of CRS disasterpatches as the rest of us. Though i have noticed that with the CRS implemented HC powertrip system there has evolved more egos that seem to play the game for the rouler-kick rather then for the war it self.
