I am easily pleased by most genres, I care more about the quality than the type:
I like:
The Mario RPGs (they had extras and were fun) The first three Spyro games (I still see games that have less content than these) SSB series (these were fun AND intense) Ratchet + Clank series (all of the above qualities)
I'll play almost anything except sports games, but aside from MMORPG's which I spend the most time on sort of by default the two games that stand out for me lately are (FPS) shooter based with rpg elements, or rpg's with shooter elements, kind of a toss up which is labelled first.
I found both mass effect 2 and borderlands stupidly addicting with extremely high production values in gameplay as well as supporting elements. So based on that, my favorite genre. I kind of don't like using the assumption of "best" because genres simply imply a style of gameplay and say nothing to its quality.
The best genre is probably going to be the one with the strongest companies operating in it. Quality titles draw a lot of players, even those who wouldn't normally play that genre. Its popularity doesn't make it the best anymore than a genre alone can determine the best, however it would likely have some of the best individual games for a period of time.
I am not sure the products of the strongest companies reflects what they think it is current best genre rather it may be what they used to think it will be the best in future. In the same aspect what they have under development may reflect their idea better. I think in that perspective MMORPG and Social gaming will win the race.
Their products don't necessarily come from the best genre, they tend to "make" the best genre simply because the strongest companies are likely to have the best array of resources to get games completed. The best genre is not going to be made up of poor or mediocre titles, why would it then be the best? People might talk about the potential of games, but chances are they're playing ones that actually reached it.
There are a lot of strong companies developing MMORPG's as well as social games, I use the term strong losely saying either they have a crap load of capital like social games, or they have a good track record like blizzard and bioware (maybe arenanet?) which lets them cherry pick whatever talent they want on top of their already succesful franchises. But there are a lot of really crappy games in those genres as well, and there are plenty of other strong companies making games in different genres.
I'm simply suggesting that the genre with the most of these companies is most likely to end up the "best" as far as games go.
I love fantasy-themed RPGs and MMORPGs. I simply can't get enough of fantasy-themed culture, especially Tolkien-type traditional fantasy. I would suppose this is the stand of many other people, too.
RPG on consoles:) I wish i could find a new Space type game, (Loved Earth & Beyond)) Too much ganking and bother in EVE, wish i liked it a bit more would play it again.
For last couple years, i have been playing mainly casual games, Browser type games. Have not found a on-line game i liked for more than a month or 2.
May I suggest you to try Hyperiums.com?
We have been on the strategy MMOG scene for 10 years, and some of our first players are still here 10 years later!
Hyperiums is a sci-fi browser game (planet conquest, trading, spying, ...) that differentiates from all other games of this kind through persistent universes that live for several years without reset. Few strategy games offer such a durability. You can play it casual (few minutes a day) or hardcore (hours a day), it all depends on you.
As for the main point of this thread, my opinion is that truely persistent strategy games like Hyperiums are the best genre in the long run, because you can really build something: an empire in the game, but also friendships, alliances... It's really like a parallel life that spices up the real one. It even adds up to the real life, when players get together here and there in the world. The team/alliance aspects inherent to this kind of game really make it a social game. More, I believe, than most RPG games, which are usually played individually. As founder of Hyperiums, however, my opinion may not be 100% objective
Maybe lack of interest in Sci-Fi in general although I really love Star Wars and some others but I have not visited any Sci-Fi MMORPG website that excite me enough to play them.
I love fantasy-themed RPGs and MMORPGs. I simply can't get enough of fantasy-themed culture, especially Tolkien-type traditional fantasy. I would suppose this is the stand of many other people, too.
I do like the Tolkien-type fantasy but after Harry Potter I like that type of fantasy more although I haven't seen a successful MMORPG based on Harry Potter yet.
By genre, I think you mean: Action, FPS, Beat'em-Up, RPG, Strategy, Racing, Platformer, Simulation etc
And sub-genres would be fantasy, sci-fi, space-shooter etc etc...
A great story in any genre will always be appealing to me eg Mass Effect 2, but personally simulation is my favorite game genre. Why? Most games if simple, have a few interaction and rules but from that produce almost tons of variation (eg chess, tetris) and even mario platformers with the freedom of movement is a form of FREE RUNNING. But simulations go one step further, and create multi-dimensionality. Basically they create a world of objects with properties and inheritance and the interactions of those things that lead to players being able to expect the reaction of the world to their interactions on it, but not the cascade or variation of ripples that chain out from the action, across the world.
World-building:
EG God-Sims (Populous, Dungeon Keeper, From Dust), Sandbox games (Minecraft, Ryzom) Space-sims (Elite, Eve).

fantasy, adventure, and action are my favorites lol. maybe some racing here and there if I can find a good racing game that catches my interest.

On the net, no one knows that I'm a dog.
4X and grand strategy games above all, but I like all kinds of puzzle games a lot too.

I dunno what's the best game but i know what i'm tired of. Shooters. We need WAYYYY more games like Fallout 3 and Dragon Age Origins.
Sci-fi/Horror RPGs.
I just love scifi, not such a big fan of fantasy.

TOP MMORPG GAMES
I absolutly love RPG´s and can get lost in them (if they are done well), i´m also totaly into RTS games.
What i can´t stand these days are shooters, i have no idea why...and i think i never ever had any interest in sport games.
"i'm a leaf on the wind watch how i soar"
