Question in the title, but a couple clarifications. For the purposes of MY question:
P2P = required monthly sub to play
Competitive PvP = Some sort of ranking/ladder/tournament/something system ala WoW's Rated Arena matches with a mechanism for equal number of players on both sides.
Please limit this to games that are already released, AND that already have the competitive PvP content in them, right now.
If you post a game, please describe the Competitive PvP part, including:
Team Sizes? 1v1? 5v5? 20v20?
How is it "scored"? ELO Rating? Round-Robin Tournament each month? Ladder elimination? Let me emphasize if the system has no persistant scoring mechanism, it is NOT what I'm asking for. "Battlegrounds" from WoW, WAR, AoC, etc. are examples of what I'm NOT asking about, unless they added Rated/Ranked battlegrounds to one of these games since the last time I played.
Thanks!

If you want that sort of gameplay, you really should stick to WoW. It's its prime asset, as far as I am concerned. I'm not entirely sure on how they work, but you might want to check out Warhammer Online and RF Online, although I'm not sure the latter is, in fact, still online.
Stick with console gaming PVP. Buy Starcraft 2 if you don't mind strategic pvp. There really isn't anything bigger then WoWs, and really that isn't saying much.
Look on this website for the game forums for T-Z
Then scroll down look for world war II online
Now if its PVP you want this is where you should look ...its a diffrent kind of PVP though (it is pay to play)
The PVP in ww2online is more pure than it is in WOW ...in ww2 it dont matter if you played the game for 10 years (its been around that long) a rookie to the game can kill you with one bullet if his aim is true
There are no hit points You hit something vital it dies (after all a bullet dont care how long youve been playing)
I came to the game from Ultima online and pretty much stayed with it all these years ever since discovering it
Ive played WOW and miss it time to time as its very polished game and allways some action to be had seconds after leaving town but I just cant dig the PVP endgame
If you wanna go to a real PVP pay to play game and dont mind switching to a first person shooter (you can drive planes boats and tanks as well) its a true war sim that has NO loading zones You can actually take a plane (if you dont die along the way) and fly for hours in one direction and NEVER see the end of the map ...its that big
Btw its all on 1 server and there is no LIMIT to how many are fighting just how many you can see I think the limit is @ least 128
EDIT ...you will need a pretty good machine with alot of ram and current drivers (wish it was otherwise)
No prob not, but if you want good PvP there are plenty of options.
Isn't this what most Mulitplayer games offer?, not sure why you want this in MMORPG's, shouldn't MMORPG offer allot more then what regular multiplayer games already offer?
There is only one game that have a good ranked Arena experience: Guildwars.
It is buy to play however so it have no monthly fees but no itemshop either so I don't see any reason not to play it.
GW has the best balance in any game and a lot of different arenas. It have however only a few battlegrounds (I think it is 3 in Factions), Arenas is the thing in it.
The ranking system is very advanced, just look it up. You can also make a PvP only character at max level.
But this is a game based on your skills, not gear.
EQ2 pvp is every race for it's self, you dont get flagged till lvl 10. They also have battle grounds now, in both pvp and pve servers.
Yes, but the PvP is still pretty bad in it (coming from someone who played the game for 3 years).
I rather go for AoC or WAR compared to EQ2 and LOTRO PvP wise. EQ2s best side have always been PvE.
This. I know you said that you want it to be P2P but there is no other game. There's only WoW and GW.
GW's Guild vs Guild (GvG) is 8v8 and it all boils down to pure strategy and outplaying your opponents. However, unlike what you will hear from people, you do need to do some grinding. You need to unlock skills packs and gear upgrades. But this can all be done through arenas - 4v4 (random) and 4v4 Codex Arenas. The codex arenas are team arenas (premade groups). However, you have to abide by the 'codex'. The codex is a set of skills. You can only use these skills. They change occasionally so you have to adapt to the new skills.
You earn factions (PvP currency) with which you can unlock the skills as well as the items upgrades. Once unlocked, they can be used on any PvP character you create (pvp char is a max level char which you can create right away).
There is an alternative to unlocking skills in-game. You can buy the skills packs. If you want to do only PvP, you can buy only the skills packs instead of the game itself. Skill packs are cheaper than the game and offer you all the skills unlocked so you can start on equal terms with everybody else but you can only play the PvP part of the game.
Bottom line is, GvG is the best competitive PvP experience you will find in any game. It uses the Elo rating system.
Also, GW has over 1500 skills in the game. Yes, 1500 skills. No other game compares. 10 classes and you can have a secondary class ( they are called professions). However, you can only use 8 skills at a time. So you have to create what is known as a build (a set of 8 skills). So basically when you come up with a composition you have to make your char build and then your team build. Char build - 8 skills, team build - 8char x 8 skills =64 skills. You need to make those play well together. A lot of strategy is required both before the match and during the match itself. You need to adapt to your opponent's build.
Thanks Anieli, some good info there. I'd been on the fence about trying GW; along with Aion its probably the only major MMO's released in the past 12 years I haven't tried. Only reason I haven't already is I'd hate to get really into the game with its sequel coming out in the near-ish future. Although, with the class changes sounds like I might like GW1 more than GW2 anyway, so I'll download the trial and give it a look.
But really, nothing else out there has added competitive PvP as an option? Seems kinda crazy that WoW (and from what it sounds like, GW) have the most "hardcore" PvP of all the MMO's, in terms of serious competition. Heck I PvP'ed (and lost) with a ~6 billion ISK ship in EVE back in the day when there were probably less than a half dozen ships that expensive on the whole server. And PvP'ed (and won) in Darkfall with a month's worth of crafting materials at stake. But still nothing close to the tension of fighting in high-rated WoW arena.
Well GW download is done, I'll give it a look. Hopefully it allows for trying PvP during the trial. Cheers.
EVE has an alliance tournament every year which is broadcast live in HD with announcers. Not the same thing, but it's pretty cool IMO.
If you're looking to advance a random numerical ladder in small scale gameplay, MMO's are not the best genre for it
As someone already mentioned: GW and WoW.

Why not? RPGs can be competitive as well. It's just not profitable to make them competitive
Well our attempt at checking out Guild Wars was a disaster. We (friend and I) downloaded the client/signed up for a trial account with no problems, started it up and it says I can't create a PvP character. Ok, at least I can check the game out. So we zone in, we're in same zone, great, we find each other....but we can't invite each other to group. Even though there is a big group box in the middle of our screen that apparently can't be closed. Well alright, maybe we can only group if on the same quest. So we go get a quest, open the LFG screen and try to check the LFG button....but we can't do that either.
But hey, we're persistent, it says we can't start a group but maybe we can get someone else to start one and invite us both. Or at least tell us if we are missing something/doing something wrong. So we ask in chat....wait...can't do that either, chat doesn't work for trial players.
This may be a fantastic game, and they may have excellent reasons for the strict limitations placed on trial accounts, but even if those are the case, this trial appears to be useless as far as forming an opinion of the multiplayer and/or PvP aspects of the game.
Did we miss something, some option, etc. that would allow us to play together? If we do some of the intro quests and leave the starting area, are we allowed to group then?
I would rather watch grass grow.
Puzzle Pirates.
Players can set pot, payout system, team size, entrance fee, elimination system, ladder type and any restrictions (basic weapons, no bonus items, all use same weapon, etc).
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Well that doesn't seem right. I never heard of that happening before, although i guess I don't know much about the trial. I take it you tried creating new characters to see if they somehow got bugged?
GW is your only real option.
Aion dredgion isnt bad but its 1 30 min arena and only 3 x a day and just like WoW heavily gear dependant expect to put in 3-8 month of work before you can compete.
War's is relativly fun (not worth a sub IMO though)
Global Agenda's aint too bad but tbh if you want a shooter with some advancement better off playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 (simply the greatest FPS of all time IMO )
SWG, EQ, Lotro etc etc are all pants for PVP
If I recall right, they cranked down the trial abilities due to farmers and spammers using free accounts to, well, farm and spam. Now, the good news, if you're up for it, is that the games themselves are dirt-cheap now. You can pick up the entire trilogy for less than $40 and Eye of the North just went on sale as well to entice people into building up their Hall of Monuments (to allow them to get gifts in GW2). You could look at picking up one of the campaigns and just going with that. Again, they're quite inexpensive and in my opinion worth a look.
Oderint, dum metuant.
I can confirm that. Getting all three campaigns and Eye of the North expansion hasn't been this cheap ever.

Yeah and it's the best bang for the buck you'll ever see regardless if you're into pvp or pve. The content is gigantic and PvP is the best there is. I hope but i really doubt that they can top this with GW2 but who knows. Because GW1 is so popular it won't die anywhere soon, even after the release of GW 2, because this game will be set up differently and no one knows if they got it right.
Must be one of the anti-spam measures. But I don't know I never did any trial. I'd just buy one of the packs, I'd suggest Nightfall or Factions, but opinions will vary. You may actually want the original if you plan on doing GW2.

GW, EQ2, WAR, and WOW.

Last time I looked my local game store had all 3 of the main GW games for under £5 each and eye of the north was £7.99, thats under £25 for 2500 hours (thats what I've spent anyway )
