Just as the topic says. In my opinion, on order for FFXIV to survive it's floundering launch and criticism, dare I say it but yes, a TRUE NGE needs to take place. A complete overhaul of the games core systems would actually help the game as opposed to what the NGE did to SWG.
Just thought I'd share this thought, and to see how many raging fans it will garner or, hopefully, constructive thoughts on this possibility which I would prefer more of. Since I'm tired of the same old rhetoric in the FFXIV forums in the last month or 2 lets change it to focusing on the future of the game.

Personally I don't think so. If anything it make them lose the fans of the game so far and those who already left it will have moved on just making it have an even smaller community.
And, besides as has been said a thousand times a lot of the complaints were done by design(like the crafting system).
u want it wow'd?
I'd rather see it FFXI'd.
Personally, I kind of agree with NetSage. That's pretty much what happened with SWG's NGE, right? With the bad press on this game so far and no idication that it [bad press] will improve, I don't see that an NGE will be the solution. Likely - as the optimists point out - the game will improve with time and things will be fixed as they go. In the end, it may very well be an NGE a year from now when compared to its current state. There's no rule saying they won't change the actual core features of the game gradually, and at the very least they'll likely make tweaks and adjustments to most things currently in the game. Of course, it will all depend on how the game does in terms of sales after release and attrition rate of subs as to how they respond, but now I'm just stating the obvious...

No. Just an AH added, quests put in like FFXI has, the guild leves opened up to being infinite. Crafting overhauled so you aren't dependent on other crafters. Combat made tighter and more responsive, and add handcrafted zones instead of copy/pasted ones. There are more but that's what is at the top of my head.
NGE would basically entail a completely new direction for the game and it's design. Keep the story, keep the class system. But eliminate barriers that make no sense, such as fatigue, the market wards and crafting systems, and give people crap to do other than just grind to grind.
Something else they can do, is bring back the party leveling style that FFXI taught us. Give us more challenging mobs that we should camp together or something similar, but have it improved upon. The more I look at the game now the more I see it offers solo choices, but then limits it but doesn't offer a great party incentive the likes of which FFXI did.
Square needs to remember what makes FFXI popular to its players and still incorporate that while persuing casuals with the guildleve system.
I'm just trying to think of ways to make the game FUN enough to sub to while they do all of this, lol.
What needs to be done IMO, and I am still playing it ATM and I do enjoy this game, but damn do I wish it was a lot better. =
- The Lag, I mean in everything, especially the UI. Get rid of this and that's a major improvement.
- Chatbox, make it so people can actually talk between their linkshells without having to switch the active one. Get rid of this BS with the chatbox closing whenever a new window pops up or you do anything that doesn't fully involve the thing. Fix the combat log being in the general chatbox (yes I have looked at the settings and config for it, it is very broken.
- Add content like it was in FFXI, those little quests were fun and people liked them, so why are they not in FFXIV? Just grinding everything is getting very boring very fast. Chocobo raising (chocobo's are not even in the game atm.), The current classes are very dull (I'm actually sitting fishing since it's the only thing I find fun besides nuking everything with my conjurer.) I think I could go on with this topic, but I'm going to switch to something else now.
- Skill points. I'm not seeing it and I know everyone else is the same way because I see just about everyone complaining about it. It's random and you can go 30 minutes without getting any in a party fighting enemies that are tough. Aside from that it's very random too going from 0-500-20-50-100-0-0-0-0-0-0-30 just like that. It needs to be fixed badly.
- The big one...The AH. I know they plan to fix what the failure of a system they have now is, but has anyone really looked at it. It's still going to be terrible after the "fix" unless you want to spend a lot of money on retainers or wait excessive amounts of time to keep moving yours. And yes I know about the tax thing, it still won't help.
- Story line, did you know that you have to make another character to see another cities story line, yes this has been announced and is official, there won't be switching cities like in FFXI. It's at the very top of lodestone right now, please go check it.
- The levequests. There are some that can be solo'd way before the level listed and some that cannot be solo'd way after the level listed. This needs to be fixed.
- Drop the Fatigue system, no I haven't hit it yet and I haven't stopped playing, but still drop it anyways. Appearance is a big deal and this makes it look bad.
- Fix crafting. That big patch they did right after release on the 30th killed it.
- The price of extra characters. See story line above.
I'm not pulling anything else off the top of my head. Yes all of that just came to me right away. I know I missed things. Now the above is a lot so maybe a total overhaul is necessary. But please don't change fishing, this is actually fun.
EDIT: You guys got all those posts in the time it took me to write this. =
And yes if they made it more like FFXI, it would have been so much better. I think that's what most had hoped for. Party play is just awful now and there is no reason to do it.
seeing as how you bought an incomplete game i don't understand why anything needs to be fixed when its still in the process of being completed. just cancel your subscription and come back in 6 months.
I actually saw a great post regarding this recently, either here or one of the fansites. It was expressing disappointment with their current implementation, saying that they'd expected them to place the players or groups into a difficult dungeon to complete. Now that's the kind of cool, off-the-hip kind of suggestion that would greatly improve the game.
As for the rest, some I can and can't agree with. The crafting should probably be what it'll be. You start taking away interdependence and you move more towards simplicity, and there's plenty of crafting like that already. Barriers should probably go, sure, but be replaced by something more familiar and in line with rested experience, as opposed to punishment for prolonged play. That, or they should re-evaluate methods to hinder farmers. I'd love to see the party-style of FFXI brought back. I loved the interdependence that existed there, and the punishment for mistakes with regards to your flow of exp or even eventual death from them.
Anyway, I like the potential direction of this thread; a welcome change to the usual posts here.

If the SWG NGE taught us anything it's that, regardless of how ineffective an MMORPG is at capturing the core fan base of an IP, if you overhaul it you just alienate those who do like the game in its current state, and those who have already been turned off from it aren't coming back, so it's a really, really bad move.
Because SWG pre-NGE basically turned off the majority of the Star Wars fan base by taking all these aspiring Han Solos and Luke Skywalkers and delivering them to the life of a moisture farmer... which alienated the greater bulk of potential players according to their exit survey information... and so SOE decided to completely gut the game and turn it around... but once the first impression was gone it was too late, and they only ended up losing the larger bulk of their current subscribers who had actually decided they liked the virtual world focus the game had initially delivered.
But, you know, to those who hate the current state of FFXIV and are hoping it'd change to suit them, they can certainly dream that Square-Enix will repeat SOE's mistake.
I would honestly love an AH!(I don't know anyone who doesn't want one...)
More quests would be great and I know they will come(I won't argue there should have been more at release).
I'm not sure about infiinite guildleve but a higher limit would better (maybe like 1 every hour with a limit of like 24 and it goes over a rolling period instead of reseting like at midnight).
The crafting system I like and don't feel to much should be changed regarding reliance on other classes. Maybe add recipe books and make it easier to change the colors but otherwise I like how in depth it is.
Oh believe me, I have. But I wanted to get some more positive ideas about the game going in hopes maybe the negativity in the forum can change to constructive ways to improve the game. I want to make the money I spent on the game worthwhile so that when I try it again in 6 months to a year I'm happier with my purchase and SEs "listening" skills. This is where they will be truly tested by fire. Guess we'll find out if it can survive and grow as it should.
Alright, personally I'm not a fan of the crafting system, but it seems that is one thing you guys are, so I can live with that not changing..at least at its core, but can we at least change how you DO the crafting? Basically the delving through menus and the guessing game and giving us an ingame recipe list? Throw me some kind of bone here.
About the SWG NGE, remember that came after the game had already established it's player base. If you do an NGE fast enough, you don't alienate that many people as it's still growing, or in this case possibly dwindling. No one really knows. Either way, these changes could take place between now and the PS3 release and have a positive effect as opposed to the negative effect the SWG NGE had.
I just remember the constant bombardment SWG received from every magazine and reviewer alike. talking about this or that and what they thought the problem was. now seeing how that all panned out. im pretty sure its best to target the issues the game currently has rather than creating new ones. an overhaul this soon seems like more than a big mistake.
im going to stick with the idea that the current PC version is nothing more than a beta test for ps3. just going to have to put up with all the nonsense i suppose..
Sorry I must forgot to mention it in my post. Ya, there should be some sort of recipe record in game. That I won't argue with.
I don't care about Auction Houses so you now know "one".

I wouldn't complain about them adding a recipe book, but I'd rather they didn't make it automatic. Give us a hybrid model - a recipe only gets added to your book if you complete it at least once with a Quality score of 125 or more.
Make that two. Out of the three major commerce systems, the Auction House system is my least favorite. I like player stores slightly more than consigment houses (which are basically reverse auction houses).
So a NGE like SWG,all the people playing will quit and the naysers wil ltake their place, that won't work,it needed better guidance from day 1.
I have no idea on how Tanaka handles the operations there anymore,he may be sitting pretty and deosn't want to do much work anymore, but from what i have seen of his staff,he had better make a serious decision to take charge once again,or Square Enix is treading on thin ice.
IMO this is a good learning curve for Square and Tanaka, you can never sit pretty and assume your loyal fan base will accept anything you deliver.FFXIII was not treated well and this game is also not accepted well.Square has been here before,it was FFVII and SOE that saved them from bankruptcy, they need to turn this around right quick.
Hoenstly i just don't see how they can turn it around. They said it took 5 years just to break even in FFXI,i am sure that game was less costly to make than FFXIV,so who knows 6 years for this game?So if they had a long term goal for this game,i highly doubt the yare going to make another game to turn the corner, not for another 6 years at least. If this game takes forever to turn a profit,i actually see Square simplify their next game bigtime, they will go for a VERY low budget, much simpler design and probably fail again becuase of it.
What options do they have?Incentives, offer bargain prices, cheaper subscription plans, example yearly subs, and their usual bribing gimmicks like maybe a free onion hat orsomething.Next option is F2P,it makes the servers more busy, lively, there is always people who will play anything if it is free.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
A very solid post Wizardry. As for SE's downward spiral, yea this is gonna hurt them bad in the reputation department. I also don't know how FF14 could ever hope to turn around and save face for SE, maybe a F2P model for that game ASAP isn't a bad idea. Maybe not though, if the game isn't any fun and is being viewed worldwide (not just in the west) as an effort in futility, perhaps SE should just save face and fold the game, offer refunds, apologize for it being incomplete, do anything. they have to have a PR person who knows their reputation just plummetted with this release.
It's good that the crafting system is interdependent, but it does have one thing that frustrates me. I don't mind that if I'm trying to create a rank 10 item when I'm a rank 12 crafter, for example, I need loads of stuff to be created by other crafters. What IS frustrating is that one of the items also required to be made quite often is a level 21 item by my own craft! So really, although the recipe might say I can craft it at level 12, I can't actually do it until I'm 21. By which time I probably will have outgrown the item.
in 6 months i probably would be playing the NEW MMOrpg that would be released as they seem to be very promising
wrap it up.. game is shit atm.
cancel the subscription, come back when patches are done.
thats how it was when ffxi first started. im ffxi veteran but hate to admit that.. game sucks so much right now.
only merit for subscription right now is that
1. you will be more informed/head start than others.
2. possible economic/crafting advantage..(as in.. free upgrade cap for future exp)
