This game has a bigger hype meter rating than SWTOR?  Really?  Can people realy be desiring another cut and dry fantasy game over anything else?  Admittedly the graphics look good, but what else does this game have going for it?  Why the big numbers? Seriously

I think this may have several good reasons. The first reason of course is that a large group of people likes the fantasy genre. I think that group is bigger than the group that likes the science fiction, science fantasy and space fantasy genres combined. But more important is that a portion of the audience for the fantasy genre is looking for something to replace their current addiction, be it EQ2, Vanguard or even some WoW players. These players are looking for an AAA title that will cater for their type of game play.

Now, you will have noticed that not that many people have hyped Rift at this moment, but those who have hyped it apparently like what they are seeing and/or expecting from this game. I suspect Rift is appealing to a large enough group of people to cause it be in the top 5 of anticipated mmorpg titles. The ranking of hype for different games on this site however is only indicative for the anticipation. The signal to noise ratio when hype is concerned is most likely very bad. But AAA titles always tend to appear in there inevitably.

In conclusion: what you like or everybody else likes is subjective, but the hype meter tends to show games that have catched the eye of the public because of their anticipated quality. On the other hand some good games by indy developers with a low budget might never appear in that list.

Oh, and I would like to add that the fact that this title will be p2p has something to do with it too.

It takes one to know one.

With the exception of Jade empire all the games Bioware made after 1st KOTOR were absolutely unoriginal. So let's just say I don't have my faith in them.

because the people that are interested in it have obviosuly done more reading into it then coming to a forum and asking that stupid question.

oh, and the fac t that SWTOR looks awful... like a single player game made by Cryptic on a bad day.

Bioware is making their vision of what a Star Wars MMO should be which does not come close to what my vision of what an SW IP MMO should offer so I'd rather play a very well polished (not my words, but rather the words of tons of website reporters and fans who have played the game at cons recently) fantasy themepark MMO made of a brand new IP that be force fed a SW world I don't like.

That stated I haven't voted Rift up or down on the hype meter and I pretty sure I have not voted to TOR either.

Point at one good, new fantasy MMO we have for us now...just because there are tons doesn't mean any fit the bill.

I think this game could well vacuum up a large majority of Vanguard and Eq2 players (I can see a mass exodus from these games). As well as players from LOTRO and wow players who want to recapture that vanilla wow essence.

And yes after playing dragon age, I'm not tremendously impressed with biowares output (curse of electronic arts here I'm thinking). ToR's gaming worlds look pretty cool, but its the shallow story driven crap and wooden animations that are putting me off.

Top tip: Don't pay too much attention to hype levels, they have little bearing on the mmo's final quality!

If you are focussed purely on hype though, maybe you should check out the number of forum subcribers for Rift vs that of ToR's.

I am guessing the difference is spectacular. Should be. But apart from that I am learning more about games I do not want to know about on this subforum than about Rift at the moment.

At last count, the Official Rift forum had 10000+ members. I think ToR has nearer 180000. So 18:1. Problem is, ToR is not an SWG replacement, a risky franchise to make into a game tbh.

Over the past 3 decades there have been a fair number of star wars titles which have bombed, as many as have been successful I reckon. (Maybe someone that cares can research this :P)

It is 13000+ now. They will get there. Where ever that may be. I just hope and expect to have some fun myself playing the game. But it may take a while before I get that chance somewhere in 2011. Oh, and yes, I hope to see others in the game, so a bit more attention given to it to attract a wider audience would help. As far as I can tell this game would deserve it.

The Reason for Rift planes of telara hype is cause the game has lot going for class system is amazing haven't seen anything close to it. The Rift system changes and inpacts the world ands it's something never done in that design. Dungeon system is nice too standard wow dungeon but a level 15 dungeon when you hit 50 turns into a level 50 dungeon with a couple more areas opened up so the replay value of dungeons goes up. If you love mmorpg look into Rift do little HW and watch a couple of videos and will like it i can't wait for it what i have seen the game looks little hard from what i read.

Here some great sites for info

http://www.tentonhammer.com/taxonomy/term/2035 great interviews and some videos

http://www.gametrailers.com/game/rift-planes-of-telara/13092  Features videos a little to the bottom are lot better then trailers

I think this is because the crowd following Rift is small, but very fond of what's being released. On the other hand, every gamer and their mother knows about SW:ToR and have something to say about it, whether it's good or bad.

Number of votes for Rift: 686

Number of votes for SW:ToR: 3229

You would think the IP alone would net Star Wars the bigger hype.  On pretty much every other website than this one it is the bigger game by far.  Im not knocking RIFT BTW.  I love to try any AAA release that comes out reguardless of the setting.  I think its more of the people who still have a bad taste in their mouths from NGE being skeptical in the voting.  Personally, I loved KOTOR so I'm pretty sure i'll enjoy SWTOR too, just not sure of how much of an MMORPG it's actually going to be.

I do not believe this is the best place to ask that question. Ask overthere in that forum why people are not more enthusiatic about their game.

    EQ3............

As someone said already, a big chunk of the MMORPG market is looking for something that can replace EQ, EQ2 and Vanguard alltogheter (I personally refuse to give any more money to SOE, so something from other developers is very welcome).

And SWTOR will be another cookie cutter casual MMORPG which will die out after a couple of months (after the storylines run out), another IP licence wasted.

And that comes from one of Bioware biggest fan.

People vote for the games they like.  They vote against the games they do not like.  It does not have to do with anything other than subjective views of the people that lurk and troll these forums.

I really would just take it all with a grain of salt.  All in all, aside from GW2 - the games in development are all being hammered and are below 8 on the meter.  It is probably just hate from all the GW2 folks, wanting GW2 to be ranked higher than SWTOR so they have been gaming the system to kill SWTORs rating...as well as the other games.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I think alot of us following RIFT are SOE refugees and because of that  know who Scott Hartsman is.  Initally I was looking for something new after f2p was announced with EQ2 I prefer fantasy MMO's.  When I learned more about the class system and rifts plus the fact that he and some other devs I have known through other games I was pretty much sold.  Since I have been following it Trion has been great with their community base there are weekly podcasts and IRC chats with devs regular posting on the forums ect.  They really seem to want to produce a quality AAA MMO it's wait and see for now but so far I am very impressed.

Agreed. ex EQ and EQ2 player here. Scott Hartsman is a big plus for the game. As are the other developers on staff. Plus With dynamic content that looks really fun, questing, dungeons galore, the rift system, wonderful art direction and graphics all that AND polish. I am sold. At this point I am just waiting for a deluxe edition with a cloth map =)

Oh, please can you add Adam to that list, I for one am happy to see him on the team and believe he will bring his experience, pvp aspect and art a bit to the game. I was sold for the following which imo has a Warhammer air to it.

Ok first up check my blog there is some info there http://warbsriftplanes.blogspot.com/

Secondly the Rifts are completley random and can appear anywhere upon appearing players must stop and close them as if they dont the rifts spread across the land and can eventually take over it destroying all towns quest mobs and Npc's.If 2 Rifts spawn next to each other say a death Rift and Life Rift...all the mobs will actually attack each other and try to destroy each pothers rift.Players can sumon Rifts..say you are in the enemys zone and you summon a rift inside a town to try and get there towns Npc's killed or draw attention away from yourself so you can sneak somewhere. The way the client is built it allows the Rift team to change game content instatly....if they wish to change a town layou they dont even have to make a patch you will just log in one day and they will have changed the world about slightly.

Each class has around 120 diffrent skill combinations.every dungeon can be gone back through and completed say you do a level 10 dungeon and you want to go in at level 50 then everything will scale up and become much bigger and harder with 11 instances at launch which ca actually be made 22, it has raids battlegrounds and alot coming at launch.

for more info just search the web ?

Just fyi for those interested in the game, while this person is obviously good-natured, he misunderstands a few of the concepts and exaggerates them a bit.

I'm not here to start an argument, but read the actual game information on official forums and other interviews for yourselves. (Ten Ton Hammer and Eurogamers have really good recent articles).  There is plenty of interesting and somewhat unique stuff to the game, I'd just hate for people to start flaming the Developers for not delivering something an overzealous fan implied but they never promised.

You know how these things go.. someone misunderstands an article and suddenly there is an angry mob throwing rocks and screaming "WTF, Rifts were supposed to spawn ANYWHERE, why was this nerfed? zomg, die! die! die!  This is NGE all over again! Free Willy!  Boycott Rift!!!!"   All the while the developers are scratching their heads and thinking "huh? Rifts were never gonna be "ANYWHERE"...someone fire the marketing team!"

"I’d rather work on something with great potential than on fulfilling a promise of mediocrity."

There was a mass campaign to click this game up lead by Rift fansites.

    Collector's editions are scams.

Well, for one thing is it made by the dude who made the "Heroes of might and Magic" IP. They have a pretty good team and the game looks pretty good. FF XIV have proven us that it is not all about look but I think that is one of the main points against TOR.

And many players want a traditional MMO that looks good, and this is the closest to that for 2011.

Still GW2 is even more anticipated.
