I really wanted to like this game. I have played many games with "unusual" GUI's i.e. Wurm Online, Darkfall etc but after several days of total frustration I have now relegated this title to my bookshelf of defunct titles.

    Enough said

In FFXIV, I want it to make me want to stick around for ANY reason... and it just won't throw me a bone.

I'm going to have to say in it's current state that this is the worst MMO I've ever seen and I've played a TON of them. People said Vanguard was bad when it launched and WAR and AoC and Aion... at least FFXIV forces you to slow down unlike those games, because most people complained those games were devoid of endgame. No one is at endgame in FFXIV by design, I guess it has that going for it?

Sounds like what you really wanted was something to look forward to.

Reading his entire post as a whole, rather than picking the snippet with which I wanted to make my point, it sounded to me like he wanted something to look forward to because what he had was completely boring.

Sure, there's plenty out there who are all about the end-game, and there's still plenty others who aren't.  However, when what you're stuck doing while waiting for content isn't fun in the first place, there's little to no incentive to keep playing without something grand on the horizon.  Sure, you can take it on "faith" that SE will improve the game (and chances are, they will), but how soon and how much are two variables that are more of a gamble than most are willing to take for $15 a month while they're bored and unhappy, in spite of whatever small amount of charm remains.

On a side note; Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was FFXIV.  It was built in five years to get to the bare-bones (and slighty broken) stage now available for the low-low price of $60.  There's plenty of reason to be skeptical based on that alone.  As for FFXI, we got it one year after the JP release.  Also, people don't call you a fanboy just because of the reasons you like the game.  They've labeled you that because of: your constant attack of any criticism against the game by either spinning any negative into a positive (and failing, at that); your ludicrous claims and excuses; your poor, uppity attitude as if anyone disliking FFXIV is beneath you and the rest that like it; and, of course, your daily backpedaling, contradictions, and hypocrisies.  That's not really a flame or troll against you, btw, but merely an observation of the truth.

"The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it."

it really just isnt fun, just IMHO

For me FFXIV has the foundation to be a really wonderful MMORPG. Unfortunatly that foundation is riddled with cracks (well more like entire chunks are missing) and nothing has been built on this foundation yet. I think it might be better to pick this game back up at the PS3 launch.

Also guildleves and local leves seem to me to be even a step below normal mmorpg questing. They should have made the results of completing such quests have a greater impact on the story world. And also, if the local leve master has so many quests he doesn't know what to do with them all, why can I only do 8 every 36 hours? The real story line quests are far too few and really seem like a seperate place than the world you normally play in. I guess I just prefer to be unravaling the story line in bits frequently rather than large chunks rarely.

    Aye,

And thats what a lot of people are saying.

The game took 5 years to make and really has nothing to show for it other than a severe lack of content, bugs and technical issues.

The gameplay is forcibly limited due to the lack of content to prevent players from hitting a wall (funny enough the limitations are an artificial wall to prevent you from hitting another wall...)

People are trying to excuse the lack of actual content in the game by calling it 'old school'. Sorry, but even old school games (EQ, AC, etc) had enough content in the game to allow a person to experience something new/different right from release. FFXIV has nothing from the start save for a bare bone attempt at content (grind mobs, grind crafting, grind day and a half dailies) and thats it.

Using the 'we don't need the game to tell us where the fun is' line is a tired excuse. The fact remains that the game lacks content that was even in the 'old school' MMOs as far back as 1997. If they could manage to get it back then, how the hell did SE not get it today?

It's not 'end game' that people are talking about when they mention 'fun', it's any sort of actual content from lvl 1 through end game.

This is 2010 ffs, an MMO shouldn't be released as a 'shell' or 'foundation' with next to nothing else for the next 6 months to a year. There should at least be something other than the bare basic gameplay for players to work towards. Sadly what you get with FFXIV is nothing but 'what you get at the start is what you will be doing through level cap and maybe 6 months from now they will patch the actual game in'.

And that is just pure bull. 5 years and nothing to show for it other than an empty shell and some promises... The game isn't 'old school' in anyway. And it's not even 'ahead of it's time' as someone else said (and then quickly edited after realizing it was the dumbest statement ever made).

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

I haven't read the entirety of this thread, however I have to agree with the 'This isn't fun..' PoV. Sadly I only played the Beta, I was intending to buy but after the problems then, I chose not too. But I found myself in a very similar position of finding myself *wanting* to like the game but after playing it I just couldn't seem to bring myself to actually like what I was doing, inevitably... it was boring.

I was however, hoping that this was just a beta issue. Alas, I'm glad I didn't jump on the bandwagon and buy the game as it seems many, many others are having the same or a similar experience as to what I had during beta.
