Things we have learned from the haters

In this thread we share and gather the wisdom that we have learned from the people extrmely disappointed in FFXIV since it did not live up to the hype Square Enix had no part in creating both in the game on various forum boards. I will add a few things i have caught so far but i would be thrilled if some of the other sadists could point out some other flaws that will doom this game.

1. An elaborate tutorial system with tooltips, voice overs, and flashing windows are bare minimum for a new player. Players can not and WILL NOT be bothered to figure out ANYTHING on their own. Information on how to enjoy a video game must be force fed, even if they already know how a system works they must endure tutorial systems for anything less would surely result in complete failure. Simply having tutorials available through NPC's like the main storyline NPC or through objects like crystals that are visited within the first 15 minutes of playing are not good enough.

2. Using anything other than gigantic tags underneath NPC's indicating what they are is unacceptable. Simply having NPC's in vendors booth surrounded by various kinds of armor and raw metal materials and a sign with the symbol for armorsmithing isn't good enough to indicate that its an armorsmith vendor. Nor is having all the NPC's who start all quests for that regions first 20 levels in the same building easy enough to find for the fledgling player.

3. You can not and WILL not call events that work like quests anything else other than quests. Calling a task where you have to fulfill goals for a reward anything other than a quest robs it of any signifcance and will be dismissed out of hand as useless and will not be reconized as content. For example, calling what would be a perfectly acceptable quest in any other MMO a 'guildleve' immediately robs it of any joy or sense of purpose in spite of the fact that it works almost exactly like quests in other MMO's.

4. Refusing to map nearly every UI window to it's own key will kill a game before it starts. It is critical that the characters bags can be opened with the B key and NO OTHER KEY. The quest journal as we will call it, since quests that simply have a different name are beneath the player base, MUST be opened with the L key. Using the J key to open this may be acceptable. No other key or system will be tolerated in the slightest degree. Instant access to every in game window and option in a organized list through a single key press is not an acceptable substitute.

In short the only things that will be tolerated in new MMO's are changing low resolution assets to other low resolution art assets, changing the names of NPC's and the storyline, terrain layout, whether or not it is PvP focused or not, and the implementation of promised action combat that ends up not really being action combat. Any changes to MMO systems outside of this will be met with scorn, ridicule, and constant trolling of said games forums.

Got to say, even though I do really love this game, a few of the things you pointed out would actually help. Number 4 and 2 for instance. A more accessible UI and easier to understand/navigate vendors wouldn't kill immersion, it would just make it a little less time consuming to get around...Also the quest thing...well...I mean I was lucky to read up somewhere accidentally that you had to talk to the NPC who gave you your first quest to get your Level 10 quest. (By the by, there is only ONE storyline quest for each city right? Or where there others I was supposed to get at level 10?).

Anyway, bar 2 and 4, I completely agree with you

I've seen mention that you got this idea from another thread like this one unfortunately I haven't seen it is it also critical of fans of this game or the game itself?  Me personally I'd actually like to see one like this about the game without so much hate back and forth between this games supporters and detractors.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Its critical of the current level of the debate that has sparked up surrounding the release of final fantasy xiv.

I finally had a chance to play this using a buddy key. As one of the prime antagonists for SE's gigantic let down to the masses, I still assess that there is much to be done. I personally wasn't bothered by the lack of "Handholding" (although I wish it was clearer about switching jobs and would recommend a small tutorial). I knew I would have to research these things out sadly, but I was ready for it.

The only thing, ONLY thing they could do is scrap the UI and controls and start over. Nothing made me more frustrated then casting a spell, swiveling my camera around, clicking on the mob, and waiting to see if I actually clicked on the mob to cast or if I accidently clicked somewhere else resulting in the spell not casting.

The game is beautiful, the music is fine. I was also bothered by the lack of community in the game. YES i said it. I asked in /say about a million times to be invited to a linkshell (Noobie looking for Linkshell) and NOT one person responded, or even responded to my whispers.

The game still has a chance, but SE really has to listen.

Dax, if you have the creature selected, you can also click the number for the spell and then hit enter to cast the spell and rinse and repeat until said enemy is dead.  If your enter key is broken...well then i guess your stuck but i'm going to assume it's not :P

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Dio, you forgot about macros. This is 2010. Why does this game FORCE ME to use macros?

There is far to much ass-hattery in this forum. Thanks for being as low as the other guy was.
