World of Warcraft: Reforging Preview

Blizzard is ramping up the information for the World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm. The official Cataclysm site has been updated with a preview of the Reforging system coming with the expansion. Reforging will allow players to customize items by altering statistics. NPC Reforgers will be available in all major cities.

The act of reforging is quite simple and will allow players to customize gear to their liking. In order to take advantage of this feature, a player needs to speak to a reforging NPC in any major city and provide them with an item to be reforged. Items to be reforged must be level 200 or higher; you can find an item's level by turning on the feature under the Display section of the Interface Options. After choosing an item to be reforged, the player can choose any secondary stat already present on the piece and allocate roughly 40% of it toward another secondary stat of their choice. The cost for reforging is the vendor price of the item. Some restrictions apply -- you can only reforge one secondary stat on an item at a time, and you can't bolster a secondary stat that's already present on an item. You can, however, undo the allocation and pay to reforge the item again. This is especially helpful in keeping stats relevant to your character as you acquire new items and skills, and change talent builds.

Read more about reforging here.

No longer can raids say healers can't roll on gear that has hit rating on it!

Because now healers can reforge most of the hit rating off to add to a healer stat, and vise versa for casters rolling on healing gear!

Oh dear even more drama in pugs with this, still in principle it seems like a good idea to me.

Sure they can, If you can't get rid of all of it, it's still a better upgrade for dps. :p

More Customization, its a wonderful thing.

Now let them prove their skill by balancing the stats in a way that prevents everyone from having to customize in the same way, and remain viable.

No, GW2 is about changing the appearance of an item with the stats you like to another with stats you don't like. It's the appearance only that is getting changed.

I don't really remember any MMO with a similar feature (WoW reforging), the closest I know would be Aion's armsfusion but it only works on 2-handed weapons (10% of the attack + manastone sockets + all the secondary properties stacking, except for attack speed, cast speed or PvP attack/defense).

And yeah, more customization is something the game really needs, so this is really a good thing.

Nice too for quest rewards. If you complete a long questline with awesome rewards but some don't fit right to your class, you can just change them a bit.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

Reforging is nothing new to me. Lord of The Rings has had it for almost 2 years now.. It is only used for Legendary weapons, but it sure is great to have those extra bonuses.

In place of a dark lord, you shall have a Queen.... All shall love me and dispair

He's refering to the crests system, which is essentialy the same as recrafting. In Gw1 it was the inscription system.

Not just in pugs. I am guessing this is going to be a problem in any raid Unless they start making Class specfic loot.
