I usually buy all kinds of MMOs, to try them out. But this MMO really don't bring anything new at all.. Or am I wrong? Well, other than that they have Batman etc in-game, that's about it.

All I see in this game is what Champions Online have. And it hasn't gone that well with the superhero genre type of game.

Can anyone fill me in here? I want to buy it, but again, why should I? What's so special?

    Hi there,

Well... I can't tell you why you should be interested in this game. But I can tell you why I am interested in DCUO.

    1. I'm looking for a super polished AAA MMO to play on my PS3. I'm tired of playing hunched over for hours at my desk. I want to kick back and enjoy an MMO from my couch.

    2. I want to play a great Super Hero MMO, as the fantasy theme has gotten stale. In my opinion CoH and CO just don't cut it. I'm hoping DCUO will be that game.

    3. The Cities are huge and not instanced, and there's open world PVP. (I know missions and battlegrounds will be instanced though - oh well)

    4. Action combat. This sounds intriguing  to me. It's seems fresh for the MMO genre. I'm tired of the standard target and press 1 though 9 on my keyboard.

    5. Physics. Looks neat. I hope it's not gimmicky though.

    Cheers,

    R

Good enough answer! An MMO for consoles is still not to be found, so ofc this will be huge on that front. But the game itself. Is it really that good. Looks to me like a CO ripoff. But still, I want to try it. I signed for beta, and resubbed CO atm :)

    Unfortunately breaking news:

    It just got delayed :(

Other than being Comic Book based, I don't really see it being that much of a ripoff.  That would be like saying all these fantasy based MMOs are clones/ripoffs of EQ or WoW, and I guess that is often said as well.

One big difference as mentioned is the action combat. While CoX and CO might be more actiony than some MMOs, they still use the standard hotkeys to attack.  1-2-1-2-3-etc.  DCUO is much more like an action console game using really just primary and secondary attacks and then combos of them.  They have even mentioned being able to hold your button down to charge an attack.  DCUO will still have some hotkey usage though with abilities such as deploying a turret, throwing a grenade, etc.

Yeah, easier to learn the game, easier to play on one side. Harder to play on the other, cuz you must remember allt he different combos. Not sure I'm a fan. Tekken all over again :P

CO seems nice as it is now, tho.

Can you post a link referring to this type of combat?  I have yet to see anything definitive.

  • shadowmageshadowmage Member UncommonPosts: 196

That is easy it is an action game and what makes and action game an action game? Mad button pressing and combos. At least to me. Also from that one mass combat vid they released that what it looked like to me. Really so with the Axe guy. Someone setting behind the screen with a console controler slamming the A button over and over to swing his axe.

Thanks for your input.  Unfortunately, that's your assesment based on generalizations.  Cryptic made similar statements about Champions Online.  While it is different and more action-like than City of Heroes, it's not exactly like playing Tekken or another action game (which is fine, btw).

I like both the combat systems in CO & CoX.  They're different, but "fine" overall.

Look at the following write-up from VE3D.com

    http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/previews/57532/Sneak-Peek-at-DC-Universe-Online

"So how does combat actually work on the PC?

'Essentially, the way the UI works is if you're in a menu on the PC, we give you a free mouse just like you would expect on the windows. It's a hardware mouse, not a software mouse so it should act exactly the way you would expect it to do. The difference is that when you get into combat, we put you directly in control of your character. There is no auto attack, you lose the mouse pointer and you get a little assist reticle and wherever you look, you punch.'

I'm not completely sure what this means.  This is the most I've seen recently regarding how combat works on DCUO.

I'd go over some of these videos in this thread

    http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/3854651#3854651

    Most notably these:

    Fan Event Video 1

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01eNj9V0xGM

    Fan Event Video 2

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm65IFJOTXM

    Fan Event Video 3

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fqd2NyHzFq8

They show the reticle for ranged, and some of the others show it for melee.  Its more like a hack and slash/ tps mix.

Your welcome. I wish I can say more about the game. I am sure you understand how that is. But in time all will become clear I am sure.

Sadly the gameplay of this game just doesn't look like it's anything good. Power selection pretty much the same thing the other superhero MMOs have. IDK, but I'm not seeing anything that would make me choose to play this game.

The cinematic for the game is great.  They should do a feature length movie...yes, forget the game - take the budget and make a feature length movie.

The game will appeal to those looking for a console action mmo... maybe.  That was the hope for CO originally, no?

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

There is a difference. CO was designed as PC game expecting to be playable in consoles. On the other hand, DCUO was designed as a console game to be playable on PC.

I agree with you about the movie

What I think this game really offers is:

1.) It offers a branch off away from the typical fantasy MMO.

2.) It offers a pace of gameplay that is faster than a turn based game, but slower than a shooter type game.

3.) It offers a game world that can be appealing to both general MMO players and comic book fans alike.

I feel that it has a potential to offer a lot more than that, but I would like to try and not lead you on with speculations. Recently I spent a lot of time of time going over the videos that have been release by IGN showing a lot of the gameplay and I have to say I'm already impressed considering that the game is now in a more involved beta. I can always say from what I saw that I am very pleased that they moved the release date back to polish the game even more.

It seems that the character creation is going to be pretty indepth that it will be on par with the likes of City of Heroes/Villians and Champions online, but more intuitive and simple. It seems they will have a great variety of powers and that overall gameplay looks pretty smooth and movement is fluid.

If you haven't I would recommend going to http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/movies.vm to watch all the movies about the game. I think the most interesting ones are the "Inside the studio" movies where a couple of the developers answer questions from the face book page and give a lot of detail about what they are doing with the game.

Another interesting thing to check out are the game play movies that IGN released with the permission of SOE marketting.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14uH8pj6AEU

When you get done watching that one simply do a search for part 2, 3, 4, and 5. Those will show you the hero side game play along with answer some questions from IGN commentors. There are also movies from villian side game play if you do a search for them.

I think if you take the time to go over all the material that's available you'll see that the game already has a wealth of innovative designs to over as well as a well developed concept of what a super powered MMO should be.

If you go through all this stuff, you should come back here and let us know what you think. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with what's already out there in terms of information. There's only more to come.

from all the videos and articles i've read about this game. hardly any information has been released about the game at all. so it's hard enough for me personally to form a valid opinion about the game in general. only thing i can come up with is "it looks fun." and that it's on console. been waiting for another console mmo since EQOA. so i have to admit the fact that because there is so little information i wont deny that its keeping me intrigued.

What's so great though?... im just as lost as you are.

While I understand your feeling that there's little information on this game, I have to disagree. I feel I've learned a great deal about the game just by watching those videos and reading the information that is currently avaiable on their social sites.

Examples of what I've learned just from doing this are:

The game will have seperate PvE and PvP servers. PvP servers will have open world pvp where heroes and villian can intervene in each other's activites anytime they want.

PvE servers will not have open world pvp, but players can take part in challenges (Duels) with each other or take part in the arena where they can fight as their player made hero or villian or particpate in legends more where they can play iconic heroes and villians like Batman and Joker.

The arena will be available on all servers.

There are several power sets available already, fire, ice, nature, weapons such as pistols, rifles, swords, staves, bows, and many others.

Each player picks a class to play as whether it is a tank, healer, or control class, but each has their primary mode as a tank, healer or controller and a damage mode. This eliminates the need for damage classes in the game. Modes can be switched at anytime out of combat without a penalty and in combat with a penalty to effectiveness.

Each player has at least three trees that they can branch out in their particlar class. Such as nature will have shapeshifting, plant control, weather manipulation. While you can do all of the these you can decide to specialize and gain more power and ability in one of those or you can generalize and have more abilities, but less powerful ones and combos. No matter the powerset you choose you will always have both ranged and melee attacks.

A players attacks and power of thier abilites can be augmented throughout the game by gain power points through advancement to increase thier powers strength or to branch out into new powers. These powers can also be increased by finding and using different gear. If you are a swordsmaster your attacks and effects of your attacks can change depending on what sword you chose to use at the time.

As players advance through the game they can take on mentors such as Batman, Superman, Wonder woman, Joker, Circe, etc. Mentors will give specific missions to the players that lead to some of the bigger boss encounters in the game. There are special suits of armor that provide different stat boosts and abilities that can be gained from completing all of a mentor's missions.

The world is broken up into two major cities and several outlying areas. The major cities are Gotham and Metropolis and both cities are quite expansive with a dozen or more sectors to each part of the city. Depending on your choices during character creation (I.E choosing a hero type meta, magic, or tech) will determine what city you start in.

You level up by fighting various enemies around the city. You can do this solo or in a team. The further you advance the more options you have from team gameplay. There are alerts that take place in the zones. These alerts are mid to high level and consist of major villians or heroes attacking a certain area of a city or attempting to stop a major crime in the city. Thus in smallvillie Doomsday might attack and it's up to Superman and other heroes to stop him.

At high levels there are major raids which usually take place in lairs such as Star Labs (Lex Luthor's lair) or the Bat Cave (Batman's lair) where you fight through with your team to attempt to conquer the major hero or villian. This is a way for high level characters to gain some of the more or coveted gear.

There's a lot more information that I could type out and maybe I will in another post later, but if you watch the videos and do a bit of searching around the various forums and site they have availabe there's a ton of stuff you can learn about this game. I suppose it just depends on how much interest you have in the game and the DC Universe.

I played a short demo at New York ComicCon and can honestly say DCU had the most fun combat I've ever played in any MMO. It was a sword/melee character fighting Harley Quinn's goons, and I just had a blast. It felt like a mix between God of War's combat and Champions Online power ups. I played with the PS3 controller and keyboard/mouse, and it felt very fluid on both. Never watched this game before and that demo alone made me preorder it.

I like CoX, but it has quite a few shortcoming. I liked Champions' character creation, but that was about it.  I found the game play boring.  So, for superhero MMO's there is a lot to improve upon.  Hopefully DCUO does a good job of it.  From listening to what they have been saying, they are focusing on all the right things. They are going for a more supheroic feel to the game, and getting away from class/archetype based restrictions of standard MMO's. It appears that there will be flexibility within all builds to allow each to fill different roles, as they mantion being able to swith to different modes outside of combat.

They are using physics object.  You can pick things up and hit people with them, or throw them, or just kick them down the street.  Even better, certain powers, like ice, can lock people down and turn them into a physics object, and you can do all those things to them. Flight, acrobatics, and superspeed, aren't just for travel, in DCUO, they give you additional combat abilities related to the one you choose.  CoH has been out for over 5 years, and there is still no endgame.  DCUO appears to be very end-game focused.  So much so, they set the max level to 30, so that people can get there quicker. If you read/listen to enough of the interviews you know that they already have a ton of stuff planned out for the near future, and claim that they will be adding new content on a near monthly basis.  With the DC license, they have 75 years of material to draw from. That is a good place to be starting from.

And a bunch of other stuff.

I'm actually pretty impressed with all I have read and heard.  If they can live up to the hype, it will be a very good game. Unfortunately, we won't know for sure if they hit the mark, until we  play it.

I take it you either weren't that big into comics or atleast DC which will be a strong enough pull in itself for some people (myself included as a comic reader from my childhood), but even if that isn't enough I thought Champions online was horrible and while they may have some similar features I doubt that SOE would develop a game as shoallow and lifeless as Cryptic is known to do.  Graphically I also wasn't too impressed with Champions online and thought that COH was and still is more appealing graphically, with that said I think DCUO has the better looking graphics of either of those three.

Add to that a rich and deep history for which to derive from and I think DCUO if nothing else would be a much better "version" of Champions online and if you liked that one why not play a game that's like it but better than it?

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
