It's pretty hilarious watch people try to discredit the figures inspired only by their personal distaste.   As if any other MMORPG company would not count Chinese per-hour gamers if they could attract them.

12 million subs, doesn't mean you have to like the game, but trying to dispute them makes you look a little weird.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

You know, there are 50 million Coke drinkers out there and I still like Pepsi, do the numbers really matter?

No not really, It just means Blizzard are swimming in more money but to most people it does not change there like or dislike in the game....

We wouldn't be posting if they didn't. When WOW eventually loses it's crown, however long that takes, there are going to a lot of potential players looking for a new MMO home (at least we can hope they'll be looking).

There are already a long of potential players looking for a new game.  Wow doesn't have to lose the crown for that to happen.

The problem is that most new games are in such terrible shape they have no real chance of retaining new players away from wow.

Well they could break the sub numbers down a bit, you know, by region perhaps? Then we'd get a more realistic idea of which way the numbers are going.

But Blizzard only really reports the numbers when things are looking favorable, they'd been pretty quiet the past year or so while working out their Chinese hosting issues.

Blizzard has reported by region a few times, but not every time.  12 million paying subscribers is 12 million paying subscribers no matter how you slice it.

While this is hardly scientific there is supporting evidence that their western market is growing.  Considering that quarter to quarter on the year, revenues for wow increased.  This all happened at the time when the servers in mainland China were offline and there was no new box sales.  It wasn't RMT sales, because blizzard donated 50% (1.1 million) to charity.

It stands to reason that western subs were increasing as the servers in China were offline, which is why overall revenue was up for the game.

Personally I suspect it hovers around the roughly 50-50 east/west split.

last time i saw blizzard report regions was this

Blizzard On Sales, StarCraft II Beta, Quality, New MMO,   Feb 2009

    http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/44698/Blizzard-On-Sales-StarCraft-II-Beta-Quality-New-MMO

By the second week of December, we were at more than 11.5 million subscribers.

For the year, the game grew by over 1.8 million subscribers, which is approximately 18% beyond where it was in December of 2007.  This growth was proportional across all regions, keeping us at a 55-45 split between east and west.

I don't like coke or pepsi I dislike gassy drinks.

However why is it so difficult to grasp the success of WoW. Even if 60% is from the Asian side it is still 12 million. Any other Western game even touch that ?

I doubt they will have 12 million after enough people get a taste of 4.0 and later Cata.  Took my credit card off the website today so it wouldn't automatically renew my subscription.  Pretty sure I won't be the only one.
