Could anybody please provide me with some clarity here.
Let's say i'm a rank 1 gladiator and i've equipped a sword with an optimal rank of 7.
Do I get reduced stats to coincide with my current rank?
Does the sword degrade quicker than it would if I was rank 7?
Ultimatley, what is the benefit of being the optimal rank (or higher) as opposed to equipping an item a few ranks below?
Thanks for the assistance or apologies if i've just beaten a dead horse.

You will get reduced benefit. Below a certain level, the benefits will be completely negated.
I'm not sure if the gear degrades faster if you're below the optimal rank, but I do know that the repair costs will quickly bankrupt you simply because the NPC costs or costs of materials will be much higher than what you can gain at that rank.
I feel bad when I see higher level gear for sale in the starting camp, because the game is still new and there's a lot of newbies out there who will buy this gear thinking it's an upgrade but actually be shooting themselves in the foot because their character has no idea how ot use that gear properly yet and so will have stats far below that of the gear they do know how ot use.
When in doubt, pay close attention to your stats when you re-equip it to compare. Store it on your retainer if you're still far from getting any kind of benefit out of it.
I'm curious too. Let's say I have PGL Rank 27 and then I have an armor which is for Rank 27 PGL, MRD, LNC, etc.. And then later on I decided to lvl the rank of my MRD which is 1. Should equipping an Axe(MRD) and is lvl1 still get the benefit of my armor for rank 27 because I already have PGL rank 27 in my status? Or the other way around?

It's been my experience that the "optimal rank" of an armor only refers to your current class's rank (determined by what you have equipped). I determined this by switching classes (by switching what I have equipped) and seeing a heavy drop in effectiveness.
There's also another thing, "favors," that corresponds to who benefits from that kind of armor. The stats of that item will take a heavy hit if you are currently a class not favored by that gear. I tested it once in beta it was like 25% as effective as when it was a favored class, even though my rank was the same. Later on, I tested it again and the hit wasn't quite as hard. So it's hard to say what exactly it is.
Wow! Thanks man, I benefited from your experiments and I appreciate that. Then It was a good choice I did remaking a new character because I screwed up my crafting(ranked up those that aren't mainly for my PGL like Armorer) and gil(spent buying gears that are way above my lvl and some aren't for my class). Thanks again!
