Nice, although sneaky for not informing people via e-mail like they did with horse riding being 75% off.

So, are these questpacks normal for VIP players or are the additon to the VIP thing?

Would be nice if I could buy them now at the severely reduced price, but alas, VIPs are not able to purchase quest packs.

     Got it, ok thank you.

They should let VIPs purchase whatever they want. Kinda sucks to let that deal slip away.

VIPs are not supposed to get these deals, sounds harsh really, but waiting for sales is one of the perks of being a premium. Its basically the counterpoint of the free TPs VIPs get. Also notice how this sale only runs 24hours, thats because it would be too easy to go out an just earn the points if it would run over a whole weekend or even a week.

If VIPs could get sales AND free TPs it would just lead to everyone dropping VIP sub after a couple of months because they got all the packs with their free TP at a bargain price. Just take this one, 386 TP for 3 out of 9 zones, easily enough to see you to level 50. For less than a months sub of free TPs. Now imagine a similar sale for MoM and SoM and you could get the game really really cheap. These sales are one of the reasons why i argued for Premium accounts from the start, if your patient enough it will be far better value for your money, both short and longterm.

In the long run premium members will be spending less. Unless Turbine really gets crazy and starts pumping out quest hubs and expansions.

Sure. . but the TP are not free really.  They are part of the $15.   I get the design idea now. . but when I signed up I didn't know I would be restricted in purchasing.  They are actually discouraging anyone from being a VIP from my perspective.  For what I paid for the 3 months I could have bought everything since I already own the expansions etc.  all I was missing was the quest packs.  I am not going to cry but I also will not resub ever again. . not leaving. . just not resubbing.

I think this smacks of a desperation move on Turbine's part. Probably all the F2P people were leaving once they hit 20.

And if you look at the top sellers chart, they were almost all one-shot items.

    So they're probably panicking.

Maybe it was a bad Idea to not let free player get to atleast 50.

Honestly if I was a player looking to totally play for free I would be turned off by every little item costing money.

Thankfully im not one of those so im having a blast.

I don't think it is desperation.  I think they were making a boatload of money off the one shot items (they said revenue doubled).  So yes they might have seen a drop off of players. . it makes sense to give them the game free if they are going to spend a lot on the one shot items.  I would just say that is good sense. . not desperation :)

They need to let people enter the store for free if they are going to sell the candy. . which is likely where the real money is.  Long term who knows.

So I played LOTRO back in early beta with my gf and she couldn't continue playing so I never bought the game. Was going to join when F2P hit, but was playing a few other games. Randomly decided to check out the forums today and see this sale. Literally just finished downloading the game, signed in, and bought $6.50 worth of points for this. So my understanding is this will get me to 45 and I just bought MoM online for $15. So for $21.50 I pretty much have most of what I need + 30 days VIP! Woot! Anything else I can just buy with free points ingame.

Definitely not bad for this MMO. I'd say of all the F2P games this has to be one of the most complete games.

lmao, right. Because when I double revenue, I panic. image

Sales like these are completely normal, DDO has had them for months, and that game isn't failing either. If they panicly wanted to prevent people from leaving/getting them back they would permanently lower the cost and not do a 24hour sale.

  • TyrrhonTyrrhon Member Posts: 412

75% discount on attractive contents is normal in DDO?!? Where have I been when Sands, Vale and GH were 75% off, can you remind me so I can revel in my misery, all I saw was regular weekly 20% off.

The moral - don't buy anything at normal price, this is not new F2P, no rush to cap. If it is not on sale, do not buy it, it is all hugely overpriced, otherwise such sales won't be possible.

On a positive note, I like discounting North Downs, would not buy that at regular price, not a good zone and you bypass its level range in the two others on sale.

And to LOTRO team: selling traits this early was a mistake, it costs you now and will cost you later. The single player game of skirmish grind 20-65 was not very clever either, I like them but they ease up gradually leaving your game. This is why people do not buy Lone lands, not its regular, already discounted and very affordable price.

You can buy Lone Lands from points you've acquired by that point. The sale is statistically a means of "now you can get this AND this" and get a taste of something more so people will want more. It's like a drug dealer giving a free few hits so someone gets addicted. People like spending money, it's what they do. Turbine has good marketing and a good game, it's a force to reckon with.
