Is everybody too far ahead? Is the game so top heavy that no one will even bother to help out some noobie?

I plan on testing it out on a froob account then maybe jumping on that 10$ discount for all the expansions!

AO's situation is somewhat similar to EVE's new commers vs. veterans: you can always catch up, but there is some work involved and greatly depends on what you want to do in the game.

If you want to just right in the pvp part of the game, you'll just get sore all over and be dissapointed.

You need to realize that you have a journey in front of you and you will not be able to have an overview of the game until 120-160 when you'll be able to experience some of the AO's peculiarities and what makes it tick.

But it definitely is possible to to catch up to the veterans. Read up the forums and especially the profession guides and take any other information with a grain of salt.

Make friends, get in a nice organization and ask for advice while not making a pest of yourself :) Also, the other sided people can help as well if you ask nicely.

However, taking into account that most veterans are older players (grumpy ol' pops), asking for stuff/money or buffs using leetspeek will get you no where, worse, they'll just put you on the ignore list.

If you want that 10$ discount, I think that's valid until the end of October... Just check it in your account management page after you make your froob account.

Having just tried the game for the first time and now subscribing to it, I can personally believe that you should go ahead and give it a try.  If you enjoy the older-style MMORPGs and do not mind having an actual learning curve when you start playing then you will probably enjoy your time.  Just be sure to do some research before you jump right into making a character, it will save you some grief later on.
