Henrick explains MO 2.0

AethaerynAethaeryn Member RarePosts: 3,150

This is what Henrick posted.

a quick explanation about the terms of MO2 floating around actually was meant from our side. Obviously it is not a sequence of Mortal Online. But its a huge rebuild of the core we were using so if you are using version numbers and its visual update it mean a step from version 1 to version 2. When we first mentioned MO2 on the irc it was when talking to old friends/players and was to describe how much is the changed code wise and graphic wise, hence MO2. So if there is any confusion if we have released a sequence of Mortal Online by unofficial discussion on the irc, then this should clear out any confusion. By judging the changes in the game it is called 2.0 in house and that was being discussed on irc. But like Cheith said above, it doesnt matter what number anyone put on the game, it's up to anyone what they think about the changes from the old build to the new build. But for us, we couldnt push, stabilize or expand MO anymore without getting the new build in place, without it we would not be able to deliver our features fully and what we have mentioned we would do for Mortal Online.

It makes sense.  .I still disagree that what a CEO says in a games IRC channel moderated by the staff of the company is "unofficial"  Imagine if politicians did that?  Oh well . .since it wasn't a press release or on my website anything I say is unofficial.

It is also a problem when people say they don't know what is going on and they are directed to IRC to find out.. . then told that even though staff there say something it is unofficial.  I want that option in life! :P

Regardless this should put the argument to bed as to what to expect.

Well that depends on if you believe him or not.   As far as I am concerned he was given an out in the chat when someone asked this:

[23:27] <[BRB]Mojoz> henrik don't make hype you won't be able to live upto, claiming its going to be "Mortal Online 2" is a massive statement to make o.O

[23:28] <@HenrikNystrom>; Mojoz, hehe I stand by that sentence

Also... this line is just 100% false: When we first mentioned MO2 on the irc it was when talking to old friends/players

No.. it was an officially advetised chat with the playerbase.. it was hyped in the newsletter.   He makes it sound like it was a small chat with some "old friends" and not meant for the public...  That's just plain WRONG.

And as you can see he just kept pushing the hype.  Now the patch is actually here.. so he needs to do some backtracking.  Doesn't really matter though.  At this point the patch will make or break the game... regardless of what he claimed or didn't claim earlier.

    Earth to slapshot...

The players are the playerbase.  The developers of Mortal Online have done absolutely nothing wrong by chatting about the game via IRC. Infact they should be applauded for there openness and communication with the Mortal Online community.

This is where you keep getting it wrong.  The IRC chat in which he mentioned MO 2 occurred on the 24th of September, which was essentially a random chat on a Friday night.  It was neither announced nor expected.

You're confusing this with the official House of Commons chat which occurs once per month - in this case, it occurred on the 16th of September.  This is the one talked about in the newsletter.

"playerbase" means everybody.  In the context of Henrick's quote above, he specifically implies the chat was intended for a smaller, more personal audience, not the entire playerbase.  Slapshot's right in that regard.

That being said, yes, communication is great.

Has the new epic patch been released?

  • AethaerynAethaeryn Member RarePosts: 3,150

The patch is delayed. . they didn't expect it to be so large so it is being recompiled and split in two.  That is what Merlyn (spelling) said.

I guess my point is.   unofficial should not be "untrue" or "unreliable".  It should not be used as a get out of jail free card.  I do not think it is a current standard to assume everything someone says is not to be taken as truth.

I think I hijacked my own thread :(

When its successful then its "open communication with the community", when it fails then its "unofficial" and cannot be held to account. No harm, no foul. ;)

Henrick is very open, but at the same time he backpedals a lot.

  • AethaerynAethaeryn Member RarePosts: 3,150

I certainly prefer the open communication.  I just wish he would say, "we didn't get that done as soon as I had hoped" rather than. . well you know.

They are on the cusp of something completely different. . yet they seem caught on both sides.. wear the suit or don't. . . I would have said play as loose as you can but that doesn't seem to be working. . look at Richard Garriot.  He tried the same sort of approach and I thought highly of him for it. . but look at the criticism that comes with it.

I think Henrick is going to have to do the same thing. . either be CEO and developer. . or back off from the business end and chat all he wants.  I honestly hope he can pull off something in the middle. . maybe if he calmed down a bit.  The game is his love though.
