Just curious as to what you all think. What mmo game has the best purpose per single player/small group of players? BTW, i dont believe that if a game has a good storyline it has lots of purpose for players. Players like to be able to directly effect the storyline enough to "make a difference" and thus have a purpose, a single goal (or few goals) to achieve, however i find such a system lacks in mmo's.

Hmmm...coming ''soon''...
From YOUR point of view, maybe Dark & Light...
Maybe Auto-Assault(althought they are not on the enforcing side like DnL).

well i like games where u dont have to know the storyline. I think Guild Wars might be doing something of the sort in actually APPLYING a storyline in the game where as some mmos dont even have a storyline. I played SWG for 3 months and never picked up any kind of story except the story of my own charactor. Just like it said on the box. the greatest story every, your own. U get out of an mmo wat u want tho. I love them personally.
I don't think there are many where the players influence the storyline. Perhaps Horizons and Saga of Ryzom might be fairly close. Dark and Light is certainly one to watch for and also Matrix Online might be pretty good once it matures a little.
Lots of games currently in develpment are promising more player controlled storylines but we'll have to see if they actually deliver.
LoL
What Purpose did all of the greatest heroes of fantasy tales always have? In every case it is in some way linked to survival. Every single other goal comes secondary to that.
So how can purpose possibly be achieved in a world where survival is always guaranteed? Would Frodo have bothered travelling to the mountains of Mordor, to drop the ring in the fires of Mount Doom, if Sauron can't even kill him? He would have just levelled up and owned Sauron himself.
The ultimate solution of course, is Permanent Death.
By including Permadeath, every single player will be given a purpose, survival. Each time they face danger it could be their last. Players can truly become villains, they can take over the world using the fear of death as their weapon. But at the same time a player can become a true hero, by defeating, and saving the world from the evil villain. Every quest could be saving your own life, or the lives of other players, that is a real purpose.

The Psychologist says the cup is your mother. The Punk Kid also says the cup is your mother. The Cricket Player says his cup is definately full. Everyone knows that Pamela Andersons cups are full. The Defendant says it was like that when he found it. Me, I just ask the waitress for a refill.
I dont play Eq2 and have never played it but ive played a bunch of MMos and currently im playing
Lineage2. I know alot of people like to Flame this game even i like to but the fact is this is a Hardcore game
meaning that a mistake in PvP can make you go red and you can lose your armor weapon ect and if you die u lose a load of exp and its even higher when your higher lvl cuz its harder to gain back exp. My point is i have given up on the fantasy portion of online games because they have failed in my veiw for mmos
for me it can only last so long and ill get bored.I like starting wars in a PvP game that has a certain amount of control to it unlike games like SB. Basicaly ive learned to make the game go my way and not just stand around and do nothing or just talk trash thats whats great about games with PvP. Personaly i was hoping that Mourning would be a good game because it has somany reasons for PvP and it has perma death but i gues its not and the company isnt great buut dont get me wrong its always fun to go party up and explore and fight raid mobs i mean just knowing that at anytime anyone can get attacked or be can attack by me is just a sweet reason for me to keep playing this game. I forgot to mention that if you want clan versus clan and dont want the exp loss you can declare war on another clan and its a free for all.
MxO.
gee....that was easy.
where did you get THIS little jewel of information? My faction has yet to be "paid" to influence the game, and we are the largest Zion faction on the Method server.
There's no way to influence the world? You know what happened when we missed ONE shaper in the last event? the entire city was assaulted by "Neo Agents". Our faction was the one who found the Shaper and rescued him, through very precice team-work and communication. And no one paid us to do it.

Thats what i was talking about. The developers have a set plan in which to take the game. Little freedom of choice.
yeah, I read that once a while back too. But it never happened, and I doubt it would. A novel idea that was tossed around for a bit, nothing more.
Ever read one of those old-school "choose your own adventure" books? Ya know, if you want to do X, turn to page Y ? That's kinda how the plot is laid out as far as I know. Each event has a few set ways that it can be resolved, and thus the story branches off accordingly.
Every single player has a chance to tip the scales and bring victory to their side in the conflict. Morpheus has met with lvl 3 players. Speaking of which, there's an entire RP team who plays the "feature" characters from teh films....they continuously progress the story, and hold mini-events between teh large official ones. You, I, or anyone could be contacted in-game to carry out special assignments which further the plot of the over-all story.
When you realise that YOU can have a very large effect on how the game plays for everyone, and where the story goes, it gives you a very real sense of "purpose". And that purpose keeps me playing...even though there are some bugs, and some of the traditional MMORPG elements may be weak, the story is the main focus of the game, and it doesn't lack.
