I don't know if this thread passed along in the past few months, so I decided to create one.
What race will you start out with for your main character, and why?

There has been a few of these but not one for a while. My first character will be Charr. Ever since EotN and I saw Pyre I have wanted to play as a Charr. I think they are the most interesting of races.
After that I'll probably make an Asura, they have grown on me.
Ill end up with mutliple of each Im sure. But I want my story told as a Norn. It just seems to fit so well with the ideas behind them that it sounds really interesting. Besides I was basically sold as soon as I saw concept art for some of their areas. Such beautiful work, a city attached to a giant iceburg. Its just too cool to resist for me.
I will be human because I am anti furry. Yes I am against non humans talking to me. It is disturbing. Yes, I know that is a freak thing to hate, but I do. I personally dislike any non human race being in any game ever, and feel this furry fetish is forced upon me by the gaming industry.
But then again.. I am against classes too, and would like to see more non class based games so I could actually have a variety of games that did not annoy me to play.
Non humans should be on a plate well seasoned after being slow smoked with a variety of wood. Not talking to me telling me they want to be eaten like this pig:

Asura, because they remind me of this 20lb terrier that used to face down my 110lb dog. It was the terrier's yard, and he was prepared to defend it. And the Asura have hot rod golems....
The Sylvari are a close second, due to the interesting aspect of their experiential blank slate.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
Eventually I'll play them all...initially? human. why? two words: "bar fights!" =-)
Sounds like the Secret World is the game you want. Not that I really want to feed your neurosis.....

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the floating iceberg city is not norn, its Kodan. It will be a visitable place for sure, but your home will not be made there. The home city of the norn is Hoelbrak, located north-west of the former dwarven stronghold, Thunderhead Keep.
As for the race I will first play, it will most definitely will be sylvari. I love the lore of the founding of the pale-tree and I much sympathized with Ventari since I first came across him all those years ago when I first started playing GW1. So to tie my GW1 character to the sylvari, the story will be that my GW1 character places a magic heirloom in a satchel in the upper limbs of the young pale-tree. When my GW2 sylvari awakens from the dream, he/she will find the heirloom and the magics will give guidance to my fledgling plant-person.
I'm also still holding out for more playable races though... I desperately want to play as a Tengu, but the Kodan look cool, too (that iceberg city is bitchen). So heres to hoping that some additional playable races will be in some DLC or expansion.
Charr! Had a blast playing the demo with the lvl 50 charr Warrior at Pax Prime 2010

Dont believe I said anything about making my home there... I just said that the areas that the Norn got around them were very beautiful and named one of them. But thank you for the info all the same.
True, TSW is the way for you to go then.
But don't worry, you're still allowed in there to smoke and burn stuff like non-humans to your heart's desire
edit: will be a damn hard choice which race to pick first, I want to play them all and probably will end up doing just that. Maybe the humans out of a 'GW nostalgia' since now they're the race slowly fading away far from their Golden Age in Ascalon and Kryta. Or maybe I just flip a coin.

Sylvari i think, would be fun to discover the lore of this new race. Gonna play them all anyways though
Asura, cause i want that golem! qq
I was really Anti-Asura at the beggining
but if I can make a scary one I may reconsider.
Otherwise Human.
SexuaLobster's Grease Portal
I'm not voting, but it should go on record to say I am a huge mech/golem fan. I will go where the Golems are, and if that has to be Asura *chokes back tears* Then by god.... I'll be asura.
But based on pure aesthetics and lore, Humans or Charr.
People think it's fun to pretend your a monster. Me I spend my life pretending I'm not. - Dexter Morgan
Asura.
Char
1) Sylvari 2) Norn 3) Asura, 4) Human. I am an altoholic so I will probably make many versions of all, except for Charr.
The Norn definitely intrigue me the most, so will probably start off there. Second would be Charr, since they sound like a lot of fun (I'm a sucker for warrior cultures).
Charr = badass.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Formula 1. Nascar is really for poor rednecks. Enduro is okay, but you have to have a navigator and the vehicles aren't nearly as sexy as formula 1 racecars.
Lol wtf ^^ btw i will probably take sylvari or human...still dont know much about sylvari...if they look cool ill probably choose Sylvari Assassin
Looks are important:
Human
Norn
Charr
Humans are looking pretty good & asura and sylvari are still being worked on.
Professions will primarily determine the type of combat, but races will determine the story a lot, so which story do I like the sounds of as well as visuals? The Asura home instance scientific lab sounds very cool plus you get a golem and intellectual snobbery as part of the bundle package. However, the Norn shapeshifting and probable race sympathy with one of the lesser races, the Kodan (huge Polar Bear warriors) could be one of the coolest personal stories, to experience, also. Then you have the humans, and everything about Divinities Reach looks amazing already and they are the underdogs which is usually a more gritty story (hopefully). The Charr's secret weapon is running on all-4's! Might choose them just for that. And who's left, the Sylvari, they have the Nightmare Court, perhaps the most evil sob's in the whole game...
I think a drunk Norn in a pub-brawl mini-game wins the day

Why would you refer me to another game when Guild wars1 was a Human only playable race game, and one of the features I enjoyed from it? They chose to make these changes to the sequal, as a fan of the series and as a player who has invested my time and money into the series, why would I abandon them over a cosmetic feature that I disagree with? That would be silly. I think that non human playable races make the game more like a childrens game, but I also understand others enjoy their furry fetish, so to each their own.
I am not going to abandon Arena Net over a cosmetic feature.
So, you want them to take out a feature with no downsides, something that annoys you, rather than just ignore it? And how does playing as a non-human imply a furry-fetish? I also don't understand how a game with multiple races is anymore of a children's game than games like GW1, what makes you think this? Do you think LotR is a children's movie/book because it focuses on more than human characters?
Perhaps you could RP a racist in GW2, that could even be taken as subtle protesting.
Asura, and here is why. They are small, sneaky, and industrious. Just imagine all the possibilities with their stature and possible skill set. Oh, and remember that dynamite comes in small packages.
