for those of you stating there is nothing wrong with starwars, try out the new combat revamp.. there was over 30 jedi accounts and other's on ebay that all were listed within a week and probly more today. there stock fell from 37.58 to 36.63 just over one night. they are pushing a completely broken and borked upgrade into live. 16 people from my guild alone unsubscribed last night and were currently looking for another game, which is why im on this site today. they also conviently hid the unsubscribe button in a link to subscribe to the new wookie expansion coming. deleted many many threads that concerned paying customers posted with their concerns. servers have been shutting down left and right the last two days due to people protesting this CU. there was a survey done that stated 71% hated the CU and then they lied to the press stating their getting more and more positive feedback each day. LIE!!! not at all true.
TO MMORG if you get a chance please check it out, let other's know.. im sure you have forum and game access. SOE customers are getting screwed royally and there's nothing we can do about it but warn others! thank you.

The sad thing is, they are always (in my opinion) close to a great game, just the mechanics of the combat has always been the biggest problem. You would think they could get it right...

We have been testing the game for weeks on the Test Center already.
There is a lot of good and necessary stuff in this combat revamp, some bad things too. In summary its better than before IMHO.
No more god buffs, no more composite armor clone army, more reason to group, better profession balance (especially in PvP), no more 30 min waiting in line for a doc just to go hunting, no more 90 % resists, no more soloing Krayt dragons etc.
Less Jedi because the power grinders cancel or sell their accounts ? YEAH ! GOOD !
That overly much quoted survey is a poll in a thread .... favorite hotspot for the CU flamers. Not exactly representative for the community and not what I hear in planetary chat on test center.
Yes, CU would be better with 1-2 more weeks in testing. As everything.
Its sad that some people will leave SWG because of the combat revamp. On the other hand many will come back because of it.

I am actualy going to agree with Erillion (surprising i know) i have been doing some reasearch and i think the CU will actualy improve the game... call mea hypocrite ut as i am coming back to SWG i will be a DAMN happy hypocrite.

I'm curious as to how SWG has evolved since its release. I've given up on SOE games partially because, since Planetside, their games run like crap on my system. Granted, my 1.5ghz is starting to show its age. I bought SWG when it was released, and it was virtually unplayable. I experienced so much lag no matter where I went. Constant studdering/pausing in or out of cities.
The missions in the game were totally uninspired and lacked the kind of narrative element that quests have in WoW. I got tired of doing the same mission with the same little imperial graphic base and a few lines of text telling me to go hunt this, or go hunt that.
Are planets still littered with empty homes and towns? What is the general state of the game? I'm thinking about trying it out again. Maybe they've optimized the game enough to where I could possibly play it on my PC. Thanks for the input.

Pablo ... I am not sure how much RAM you have but I would guess your rig is not up to SWG if you really want to play at an enjoyable framerate and grafic quality. Your system is clearly showing its age (WoW should be ok, maybe EVE too).
My recommendation for SOE games:
2+ Ghz
128+ MB grafic card about a year old
1 Gig RAM (512 MB possible .. but from experience - get more .. the RAM is the key !)
Get that or better. By continually upgrading my rig I found out that 90 % of the lag is client side and NOT server side.

Okay, one thing I hate is people that just BOMB the CU.... Its a GREAT game, and the update will make it harder for everyone to play, which is what the game needs! you shouldn't be able to master marksmen in 2 days. You shouldnt be able to master medic in 24 hours. The game needs to be harder, and thats what they are doing.
Please stop flaming the CU. Even if it sucks at the beginning, it will be fixed. ((EQ2 for example))
SWG has come ALONG ways since launch, and the CU is just making it better.

P.S. Sorry about being harsh, but saying "SWG gone bad!!!" is a harsh statement, when really, SWG has a 7.6 player rating and is one of the best MMORPGs out on the market. I hate people that flame a game because of an update or one problem when it can easily be fixed...

Yeah but the problem is that its not a simple case of one problem or of any particular update.
And its not a case of making it harder - the CURB will not do that at all. What it will do is make some sections of it impossible unless you are a Lvl 80 combat toon in a group. Thats not making it hard I'm sorry to say.
It was a great game - once - but now its all PvP and nothing else. If I wanted PvP, I'd play WoW (which I do anyway), if I wanted to play in an immersive environment set in the Star Wars universe, I'd play this game - but all thats gone now.
And you have to remember that the whole reasoning behind the Combat Update was as a result of decisions that SOE themselves have made over the past two years. It was not the players who made it possible for everyone to wear Comp. It was not the players who introduced 2500+ buffs, or uber food, or uber looted weapons....it was SOE that made them, or at least provided the infrastructure to make it all happen.
I agree with some of the posts here, SWG has been going bad for a while now and its as a result of the constantly borked decisions that they have made over the course of the past couple of years. If you look at any of the decisions and updates that they have done, almost to a tee they have all been done badly. The initial unlocking path for Jedi was completely against what SOE themselves said it would be (a mysterious and haphazard path), and then they compounded it with the Holocron. The Doctor patch that introduced buffs was brought in to allow everyone a chance to experience all facets of the game, and now that everyone can experience all factes of the game its deemed to be a bad thing. Ditto for Chefs foods, ditto for Armour, etc. The 2 jedi patches entrenched that profession to such a degree that they turned SWG into the first MMO with an Alpha class.
Instead of making such wide and sweeping changes though, all that needed to be done was to scale back the buffs to a reasonable level, scale back armour and make it so that each type armour does something different (the only reason everyone used comp was that comp had the most resists), remove or nerf the uber weapons (maybe even remove DoTs as a game mechanism and restrict it to CMs) and limit the combat action tree to 2 or 3 items (though it's removal doesnt bother me in the least). Warmup and Cooldowns I would be happy to have stay, but the changes to the HAM system are a complete joke and more reminiscent of EQ or WoW than of the innovations that were early SWG.
So instead of fixing what is broken, the game now has these cartoony particle effects (I dont need a light show everytime I jump on and off a bike thankyou very much), a completely borked level system that precludes everyone who is not a Lvl 80 combat toon from 90% of the game environment, forced grouping and a simplified crafting system where every crafter is the same irrespective of level or resources.
And to add to this, they are going to release it with whole slabs of the game largely untested, and then are going to bug fix and repatch this mess for the next 6 months - and most likely create exactly the same situation that the necessitated the CURB in the first place!!! Again, I', sorry to rain on your "we all love SWG" parade but the CURB shouldn't suck at the start - it should work - and this particulare pile of crud will do anything but work.
Kudos though to you fanbois for sticking it out and seeing the shiny stuff to this particularly dark cloud (I have a bridge for sale btw if you are interested - you seem like the type that may be interested).
To this player, the shiny stuff is very hard to see amongst the crud and mess that is the CURB.

I guess its a little late to say my peace on this. Not too long ago I asked if it would be fun to come back, And i Heard they were finally doing the combat rebalance. So instead of waiting, I resubbed, and went to playing on the test server. It didn't take me long to decide that instead of making me come back, it would prevent that from happening again. SWG had a unique system, and it worked well at release, with minor tweaking, it would have worked. As time went on, it became more, and more unbalanced. They overnerfed, overpowered, and didn't look at this things in the wider view.
Were buffs too weak at release? I would say so, but thats because no one had good resouces yet.
Was armor rather weak? Same
Was ranged better then melee AT RANGE? YES, as it should be.
But it got to the point, where Ranged was the pointless profession. Rifleman wasn't bad, but with uber armor/buffs/def bonuses, and CoB, melee was king. That destroyed the SW feel.
So instead of what they said they would do, over a year ago. They give us something we never asked for, a level system, among hundreds of other level systems. And to top it off, imo it is one of the crappier ones. A group is actully penilized, beyond lost potential, for letting a weaker person into a group. And this is supposed to encourage everyone to be able to be involved?
Sadly SWG will not achive its potential, but thats true of alot of games. I will give it many things tho.
1)Many emotes 2) Fun entertainer profesions 3)Lots of varity in clothing/style (for most races) 4) Great enviroments 5)Huge RPing potential, with many supporting in game features

Ok let me make a few points.
Stuman is correct that armor and buffs should have been scaled back. That would have fixed some of the problem. Other problems such as defense stacking could be dealt with as well. I definitely agree with people who say that the original system could have stayed, but obviously with some fairly large changes.
I didn't like the sound of the CU at first either. In fact, it was the first time I said to myself that I may cancel my accounts. However, after playing it quite extensively in test I believe it's a vast improvement. No I can't solo a Gnarled Rancor any more but I never should have been able to in the first place.
Now, that being said, I do like the CU. It is sort of a level system but, surprise, SWG always has been. Now the devs have chosen to display those numbers where before they were hidden. I've been saying that for a long time but I obviously have many people to reach.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
I started playing SWG in Oct '03. I quit about 2 months ago, as another post in this thread indicated, no matter how many times things were changed, it seemed like SOE screwed it up everytime.
From the very beginning there were several professions who's abilities never worked, or were very redundant, and made them obsolete from the beginning. My first elite profession was pistoleer, a profession that should have been one of the coolest from a star wars canon perspective. Instead it was the weakest of all the ranged professions and a joke. However, it held some of the strongest defenses and many people held a line or 2 of pistoleer just for these defenses and never even had a pistol in their inventory. Smuggler, oh man where to start, ok this will sum it up, has any smuggler on any server ever smuggled anything???
Hologrinding was the first gamebreaker IMHO. I was against jedi from the beginning. No game should have an alpha or "god" class. This was the first major mistake.
The melee stackers take over. Once people realized that the defenses stacked from profession to profession regardless of equiped weapons or abilities used, here came the melee tanks. Ranged professions could not compete. Again going against star wars canon.
Buff & armor. I mean 90% armor and godly buffs, in a pvp duel between to fully armored fully buffed people fighting unarmed, you would do like 15 damage a hit!! I mean with HAM of like 3k and only 15 damage which will regenerate faster than you will even see it, what a joke...Food buffs ok you can't even pvp without Thakatillo, unless you like being knocked down and dizzied by jedi and teras kasi so that you can't get back up and are killed laying on the ground w00t how fun...Stomach not being emptied after you clone...man the list goes on and on.
They spend 2 publishes in a row on their precious jedi, ignoring the professions that never worked from the beginning.
They made nerfed the creatures in the game so badly they killed the whole Creature Handler profession, one of the professions in the game with real ties to the star wars canon and actually fun to play. I mean right before I quit as a master brawler/master swordsman I could kill a kimoglia dragon ( a huge powerful beast to say the least) solo with a 4 hit macro...seemed so wrong.
I guess the most depressing part of this all is that there were some really innovative and excellent things in SWG but they just killed them with the things I listed above. The interface is fantastic, the chat, in game email, the size of the planets (albeit screaming for more content in them) the freedom of being able to hop on your speeder and ride anywhere you wanted, not being locked into some zone or linear path.
Then they are promising a revamp to the combat and dangled it out like a carrot on a stick, meanwhile pushing expansions which have to be purchased......on and on and on..
The star wars timeline they started with got blown out of the water and now its just whatever star wars stuff they want to put in is ok. No continuity at all...
