Two Words: Scratch Pad

StrikesBrainStrikesBrain Member Posts: 222

Knowing you guys, you'll probably force us to keep reclamation maximized at all times, so, in interest of having a means of taking notes on the computer from both sides I present a real simple idea, the scratch pad.

The scratch pad would be a completely OOC tool which would bring up a dialog that allows you to write ascii text into a window,  when you close it, the text saves.  When you open the window at a later time, the text is back there.  This allows you a space to take notes on IC stuff you made up so you remember important names for your character and you can keep track of other stuff your character should know.

Now here's the fun part, have this scratch pad save all the text into "scratch.txt" or some other such file in the directory of reclamation.  When the player wants to take additional notes and he's not logged into reclamation, he can just open the text file and write them down.  When he pops back in game, he can pop open his scratch pad and his notes he took while he was logged out will be RIGHT there.

Now hows that for a nifty practical and easy to implement idea?

looks through the 5 subject nootbook that has been resting next the keyboard for months

That certaintly would make things easier.  Also, if there's a way we could flag conversations, not to send in reports for Lyra, but more for ourselves.  Example, getting a history told to me for a task, I could flag the conversation so i can write it down or print later, that way i'm not writting in this notebook while trying to pay attention as to whats being said or what else is going on around me.

damn, Brain beats me to the suggestion again

    ....and life goes on

I had a cheesey way of flagging conversation in UL.  There's a way you can select yourself for a whisper.

Lets see if I remember how....

You evoke an art you can target yourself with.  That will cause your name to appear in the who list, now lets see.... I BELIEVE you did it by using m or n to highlight your name hen left clicking NEXT to your name, not ON it, clicking on it would evoke the art, clicking to the right of your name would bring up the whisper dialog with your name already up, MAY have to double click.  (hint: you can right click to read your own description if you click to the right of your name in this fashion.)

Anywho I'd get open a whisper dialog with my name selected, then I'd type "Conversation flag#1" or some such.  Then I could open the logs and use the word find function of just about any program that reads those things and search for my key phrases.

An idea would be to include some sort of "echo" command that would dump whatever text you type to your chat window without broadcasting it to anyone else.  It would allow you to add comments to your logs, you could then flag it with easy to remember key phrases and then search to them at your liesure.

I like the scratch pad idea. However to make it actually functional it would have to be a two panel window with a file tree on one side to select which note to open. You could then have a "history Deafen" at your fingertips as well as being able to record conversatio.  This, combined with a user interface that allows for more than two lines of text in the chat window would be a very powerfull, and conveinent feature.  Especially for completing those essay tasks, or for teachers to give classes.  I am of course assuming that you can copy / paste to from the chat window.  Also, the scratch window shouldn't totally obscure the view window.

Be faster and handier if you could change your scratchpad output and input to a different file via a command line at the chat window.

    /scratch c:
    otesdeafen.txt

Of course command lines require that the person actually studies the game interface and learn obscure stuff.

As for the windows, we all know RC is going to be leaps and bounds away from UL's engine.  I hope they have windows you can drag around the screen and resize and with a handy dandy little scrollbar on the side.  Then you could keep your notes wherever you damn well want on the screen.

P.S. How did I lose my leet status and go back down to 3 stars? lame = (

    i love the idea too.

and night the star systems goes as follow

3 star = old ruler of dolt you coudln't be 4 star or 5 because it just can't be

4 star = old ruler of HC of course 1 more star = me better

5 star before striker says something is because you TROLL THIS FORUM TOO MUCH!! hehe

but honestly i think it goes on how many time you visited the forum in the last week then months and determines the value of the star.

I accidentally set the forums to notify me whenever someone replies to a topic I either posted to or made.

That's why I alwasy got a rebuttle to just about anywhere where's there's activity.  My e-mail is doing the lurking for me.  I'm just zipping to the scene of the crime.

The stars seems to be related though to how many actual words you spit out.  There were times where nighthawk was FAR more active then me in terms of posts he spat out, while I posted just 1 or 2 to his 20 and still my rank went up.  The difference, volume, all his posts were one liners, my posts were dim dam essays.  His rank went down which seems to indicate that perhaps it's a words/day measure.  The more rubbish you spout from your mouth the more important it seems to think you are.

So yes, I am the high lord of rubbish.  Then agian I was ruler of DoL at one time, draw conclusion as you will.

    I got to say,

A Scratch Pad (like note pad inserted in the game) is a must with the amount of information we have to type.

Also an option would be nice would be to be able to transfer some chat text to the scratch pad to save time from typing. And also a way to copy and paste from your scratch pad to the text, of course limiting the amount of characters to be able to type so we could stop any abuse and stuff.

Brilliantly simple idea. Can also save oaths to recite and such there, and reports for certain tasks. A way to either flag or be able to copy and paste chat from a chat window into scratch pad would make noteworthy conversations easy to look at again.

Also not to go off subject, but I hope in Rec that staring at a night/darkmare won't cause your chat window to scroll with Para-gaze rejections and such! Makes up for a good portion of my logs, and really makes battle conversation difficult to follow.

Probably be better if all status affects were all shown as icons.  When a defensive effect blocks something it's icon would flash. As for arts, it will tell you who cast what on you, but passive auras won't give names.

Another option that is used in some games is the option for multiple output windows where you can filter the text from various sources into various windows.

City of Heroes was a GREAT example of that, not only did they have a set of predefined windows, you could define your own windows and set the filter parameters.  The thing is, UL doesn't have many input sources, and I don't know if Rec will either.  So such a feature would be a bit too complicated for something that isn't complicated in the first place, and therefore possibly superflous.

The icon idea sounds great. Especially so you don't have to keep hitting the Effects button to see what they are all at. Maybe an icon standing for each effect with some sort of progress bar or something, or five colors or dots that mean Very Short, Short, Medium, Long, and Very Long duration.

  • StrikesBrainStrikesBrain Member Posts: 222

Now that's a smart extension on the button idea.  The color coded dots are keen since it doesn't take up a lot of real estate on the screen, yet it gives you durations at a glance.

Real nice thing is, you figure out a HELL of a lot faster when someon abjures you with that setup.  In combat it's so damn hard to keep track of messages.

I like the idea of having something to type things down, because
the handwritten notebooks really do start piling up after awhile and
    are difficult to organize
And being able to catch certain conversations isn't a bad idea,
because having to dig through logs can be tedios. I know some
    keep logs of everything
