Good for you, but now you can perhaps imagine how some of the more loyal fans must be feeling that were not able to attend those meetings and did not get a VIP code beta invite. Of course its their party and they roll the dice, but this is no way to treat your most loyal fans. Certainly not.

I totally disagree.  This method insures a rotation of players that get into the beta.  Instead of just one group getting months of beta access.. they let many groups participate for a limited time.   This gets the developers fresh and varied feedback AND let's more people feel included in the process.

Consider these more as stress tests.   Then you will have a smaller group of dedicated beta-testers which will continue through all the tests to provide feedback about systems and items that take time to develop like character progression etc...

I think this sounds like a great model... and am interested to see how it turns out.

I totally understand that this plays a role in their decision to go that way. But I pass.

It's not only the cons that will get VIP access as stated in the thread there will be community members receiving them and other ways to get a VIP pass.

Although I am not overjoyed about the prospect of a single weekend or not getting in at all I understand it and think the model will be good way to get a wider audence in.  Betas now are more about marketing than actual testing with a new IP the more they can spread the word the better.

I am a loyal fan on all surfaces, I actually attended Gamescon because Rift was coming. And the rotation makes it better for the game to be tested, they need core members who can test everything and they need to use randoms for specific testing. Which in the end isn't a problem, because it's still Beta and people that really just wanna play and not test can play when the game launches.

    Cheers

Personally I think this beta system is dumb.. How can they expect to receive accurate beta feedback If most of the beta testers selected are only able to test the game on certain events during weekends only?

Lets say I make it into beta for a special test event, I only receive access for 2 days... Well, 2 days isn't really much to go on at all in terms of detailed accurate beta feedback...  I've beta tested quite a few MMO's in the past, and the first week or more I never post any feedback.. The tester needs time to properly get affiliated with the game mechanics, combat system, quest system, and environment...

I'm sure most people who get selected for those weekend beta events won't even bother to give feedback at all, and those that do will state how they feel about the game during that particular event which really shouldn't mean much due to not enough adequate time to fully test the game..

I feel If they select people for Beta, it should be for the long haul and not just a 2 day event.. Ridiculous really, lol.

No, you obviously don't get it, but no matter. Go fetch those bugs.

Perfect example as to why this doesn't work>>>FFXIV.They had special invites for their Alpha/BEta for about 6 months and when Open Beta finally came around ,i was in shock. It felt like not one person had given any feedback nor did the developer fix anything at all,the game was in a mess and the simplest things were not fixed,so ya i wouldn't trust these sepcial invites, there bound to do like all the rest, play like it's a release and no feedback.

There SHOULD be an in game feedback button and if players in Beta's do not give at least one feedback every hour or 2,they should be boot out of game, this is what Beta is SUPPOSED to be for,to fix issues.IMO it is a two way street, developers have been using Beta's as a sort of pre hype,to determine server load they will need, they really care abotu as much as the frantic players about fixing issues unless they are down right game breaking.

Well, where you are wrong, already, can be easily seen if you have long term memory and have actually been keeping up with this game as opposed to drive by posting. The countless reviews from reviewers from tons of different gaming sites, all with no doubt slightly different tastes in gaming, have uniformly commented on how polished and familiar the game is.

So, apparently they (Trion) know what they are doing despite what some people who hardly follow the game may think. Yes, I was in the FFXIV closed beta for a while and despite what you may think there was ample feedback for the developers. SE was just bound and determined to do it their way (i.e., their response to jumping as an emaple to their overall mentality/approach with testers). Trion is not SE and anyone, again, who has spent anytime on their official forums and interacting with their devs knows this. Course, if you only get your limited information on this site, well, incorrect comments and assumptions will be made.

For the record as I haven't seen that it was posted here, here is the acutal situation with respect to testers:

    • Pool 1 and 2. Chance beta testers who got a con floor card code or who register a Trion account (or for beta) from the homepage. Those who had Trion accounts before October 4th are in a separate pool with a higher chance of getting invited to a one weekend testing event.

    • Pool 3. VIP beta tester codes that were given at the Trion Community parties at the cons (not to be confused with codes given out on con floor). There will also be future chances/contests to get one of these codes. These codes are good for all weekend testing events that are held during beta.

    • Pool 4. Special invite codes. These people are the ones currently in Alpha testing and that are added to as Trion sees need for more people. They will continue to add testers to this pool going into beta. These testers are the only Pool that tests the game 24/7(as long as servers are up).

All that said, I don't know if I am so keen on this method but Trion knows what they need and only they, not us forum jockies, know what quality feedback they are getting. I'd much rather pull my educated guess from the feedback of the articles written about Rift by people with hands on than from a totally different game made by a totally different company under totally different testing circumstances.

When WAR was in beta, a poll would pop up after you did a few quest and when you logged out.  If I was a developer I would use that type of system

I think it's cool that I'm going to get to play Rift long before the loyal fans of the game and I just started looking at it this week. Yay go me
