Tower of Frozen Shadow (EQ1 - Velious Expansion); I loved how each floor required the players to obtain a key to advance to the next level. I also enjoyed all the different themes of each floor; library, wedding floor etc.
Zangarmarsh (WoW - Burning Crusade Expansion); after leaving the desolate burning planes of Hellfire Peninsula my wife and I were pleasantly surprised when traveling West to come upon epic fruiting bodies that formed a forest. The music, the blue'sh hue, the Spawning Glen, the Coilfang reservoir's spiraling water cyclone, the ogre island with a tree as a bridge floating in the middle of space and so forth.
The Grey (EQ1 - Shadows of Luclin Expansion); I remember the first time walking into this zone and immediately my breath-meter started depleting. As this expansion was on the moon, this particular zone was on 'light-side' where the vacuum of space had sucked all the air out. An interesting pyramid leading down below the Grey was Ssraeshza Temple, flanked by obelisks and guarded by serpent-humanoids. The concept was more interesting than the flat grey wastes were.
Kedge Keep (EQ1 - release); an underwater dungeon! Very few and far between are these magnificent gems. I remember delving deep into this keep dozens of times for my Staff of Elemental Mastery; Water off of Phinigel Atropos. Loved the green robe from here too. Many interesting fights and twists and turns and you swim about.
Castle Mistmoore (EQ1 - release); On the same continent as Kedge Keep, this little vampyric doosy threw me through some loops. Man, the death penalty was sick.. I loved how this zone accommodated players of many levels. I loved all the secret entrances and pitfalls that Everquest put throughout. I also enjoyed the Soulfire quest that brought me there to camp a Troll for hours upon hours on end. The atmosphere and feeling of power was strong.
Although I have played more than two dozen MMORPGs, try as I might, my list of favorite zones includes many WoW and Everquest related areas. A few other favorites include, Unrest (EQ), Blackrock Spire (WoW), Old Sebilis, Temple of Veeshan, Cobalt Scar, Winterspring and many more. I would put some FFXIV zones up there, but not very memorable just yet (need years of exposure).
Dark Astoria in City of Heroes. It is in fact my middle name as well, but it is a really cool zone. It is perpetually in fog and you can just see the glowing sigils on the zombies in the distance. It is really great for a superhero game because you can be flying and then "oh snap," /dodge building
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
2) Tattoonie - SWG Fantastic Star Wars realism and immersion
3) Jita -EVE Truly epic the first time you go. Then there's the epic lag when you are ganking wardec targets. Getting locked out when traffic is congested. And finally, losing $1000+ in ISK in your frigate (nuff said)
4) The Great Barrows - LOTRO Stunning visual instance. The phasing is very reminisent of the visuals in the movies.
Mine will have a lot of EQ1 zones in it because it is the game I had the most fun playing out of all the mmo's I have played.
1. East Commons - I loved the fact that when EQ1 first started it was up to the players to make the economy the east common tunnel in that regard was the zone to be in if you wanted to barter. Most games now with auction houses and player stores ruin this system.
2. Lower Guk - The place was always full of trains. Anyone else remember camp checks? I loved camping in the zone because you got the chance to meet and talk to so many different people in the game. It made the game much more social.
3. Plane of Fear - Death Touch anyone? This zone you had to zone in one at a time and run to a spot in order to setup for teh zone wide raid because if not you would of wiped your entire raid which consisted of a lot more people then what todays mmo's raids would bring.
4. RunnyEye - Low to mid level zone that was just fun for the most part. Decent loot that you could barter with in east commons.
5. Greater Faydark - A big low level starting zone that was a social hub for the game because of all the zones around it as well as wizards spire.
So many zones I loved in so many games I'm not going to order them but here is 5
pre NF Thidranki - I loved this zone I got my first RvR kill here on my 23 ranger the day BGs came out. I always loved RvR in thid more than anyplace in the game I like OF better than NF but they were both good.
Mirrorsea - This isn't really a zone, it's and island. but I would call it my home in the game it is in.
Valkrum dunes - This might be one of the most hated zones in FFXI but for some reason I always loved getting a character through it.
Ru'Aun Gardens - My favorite end game zone in FFXI sky was done in a way I would like to see many endgame areas done.
Forseral - It's tough to pick which planetside zone was my favorite but this would have to be it, I think it had some of the best lanscapes and bases to fight at.
I love going to every corner of every zone it was tough to pick out just 5 that I liked.
------------------------------------------------- Achiever 20.00%, Explorer 86.67%, Killer 60.00%, Socializer 33.33%
The Shire (LotRO) - This zone could be pulled straight from a storybook. It captures the heart and soul of what you would expect the Shire to be like perfectly, and it surpasses any other area I've played in a MMO by a wide margin.
Moria (LotRO) - Is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Poeta (Aion) - Beautiful, peaceful, and serene. I often stop by the zone just to relax.
Teldrassil (WoW) - My first character in WoW was a druid, so this zone is very likely helped by a very large serving of nostalgia. However, the zone itself is beautiful, and remains my favorite in the game to this day.
Atlas Park (City of Heroes) - Though you have two choices of starting zone on the hero side, in my mind Atlas Park has always felt like the 'true' hero starting point, due to the very hero-ish music and large number of game-lore landmarks.
Runner-up: Lesser Feydark (EQII) - I've always loved fey lore, and both visually and lorewise, Lesser Faydark does not disappoint.
