EverQuest II: Server Merges Announced

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Everquest II Senior Producer Dave Georgeson has announced a series of server merges beginning the week of November 16th. Combining servers is something that players have long asked for and awaited Developers anticipate the moves will bring more robust game play experiences to players. Sixteen servers will be affected by the mergers, eleven will not.

The Merges

  • Nektulos merges into Guk

  • Najena merges into Unrest

  • Befallen merges into Oasis

  • Blackburrow merges into Everfrost

  • Mistmoore merges into Permafrost

  • Kithicor merges into Butcherblock

  • Runnyeye merges into Splitpaw (UK)

  • Innovation merges into Valor (DE)

We’ll pre-announce each merger before it occurs and keep you updated on the status of the merges as they progress.

The original post can be found here and a merger FAQ can be found here.

Well they were really needed in the live servers and... I bet they are going to recycle them in new extended servers.

I agree that it's a good thing... there wasn't a lack of people to play with at higher levels but the lowbie areas were often pretty barren... course I'll miss having stormhold all to myself.

You're late Suzie, I posted it last night on the EQ2 forums already ;-)

About the merge. My guild (on Runnyeye (UK)) is mixed positive about it. Runnyeye is pretty active, and we think it's a good thing in general so we get "new blood" on the server. What we don't get is why Runnyeye is merged into Splitpaw, while that one has the smallest population of the two (202K vs 159K).

I played on AB for a spell. Lowbie land is dead dead dead there.  I'm not sure this will fix anything for the lower levels.

Oooo...this is actually cool, since I'm on Everfrost and I know a few of the players on Blackburrow. I at least like the pick of servers that got merged with ours. :)

Reizla, it's the same on Everfrost. We have a very good sized higher level population. This will just make the server even MORE active...which I think will prove to be great fun. :)

highly doubtful, more than likely they'll use them for another game, perhaps for the upcomming DCU online..  or whatever its called, i think it was inevitable though that the server merges were going to happen.

most of these servers have been online for > 6 yrs. They're probably going to catch a minor refresh of memory and drives as they consolidate and the old systems are going to be nixed. Think about it... (Non-duel core xeon's were common on servers then... now 4 quad cores. 2-4gb of ram on servers then... now 32-128gb of ram.)

Heh... those "servers" wouldn't make good desktops today.

Just because a "Server" has been online for 6 years doesn't necessairly mean its always been the same hardware.

The idea that these "server" instances are a peice of metal in a rack somewhere is antiquated. More likely each "server" instance is a carved out VM as part of a bigger SAN / cluster configuration.

    The isolation is arbirary.

    Yet another cashgrab by SOE.

Now that a large portion of Vets have transferred to EQ2X for the population benefits, they finally decide to merge the Live servers again after players have been asking for ages, enticing the transfers to transfer back to Live.

This move will cause some Vets to transfer back from EQ2X, allowing SOE to bilk another crop of cash from players based on little more than some hope that Live populations have improved after the merges take place.

I'm quite tired of watching business practices like this occur. This is beyond shady and unless SOE offers free transfers from EQ2X back to Live I will be inclined to believe that they had this planned for months and purposefuly waited until players had transferred off of Live to announce it.

Yeah maaaaaan, once again SOE screws over its players by giving them what they want!!11!11one

They are not "giving them what they want". This is a case of too little, too late.

SOE screws its players by waiting until they have already spent money to leave the Live servers and head to 2X, due to failing population, and then dropping server merges on the remaining populace shortly after they leave to entice those same players into spending even more money to transfer back to Live.

How do you know a large portion of the vets have transferred ? Simply speculate so that you can paint SOE as the devil money grabbers. Yes all other developers are altruistic. Blizzard made what two million in a few hours selling that celestial steed to players. But no only SOE is the evil company. You guys need to get over your hatred of SOE .

Who is this "you guys" you are referring to? I am but one person, and I don't have any hatred for SOE.

I do despise SOEs piss poor customer relations and business practices though, and it is no secret that a large portion of Vets have transfered from Live to 2X.

The Live servers have been dead for quite some time now, if you actively play the game you should realize this, regardless it wouldn't take much other than a little research for you to see that my view is not speculation, is based off of known facts, and is entirely correct.

I don't need to paint SOE in a negative light, they do a great job of that themselves.

I see what you're saying...But SOE has given folks plenty of reason to hate...Let's be honest here OK?

I think the merges are great, I'm just surprised it took them this long...I kept my Station Pass WAY beyond when I quit EQII and every time I popped back in for a look-see it was beyond dead (Blackburrow Server)...I don't know why they wait this long...They're still waiting on SWG and I just don't get it...There's nothing more depressing then logging on to a Game you enjoy, or once-enjoyed, and seeing a ghost town...Nobody wants to play in a ghost town...image

    [mod edit]

As to the article - I'm generally a smaller population kind of guy, but if the players want it then I think it's good they did it for some of the servers. The key for me is not getting so crowded that it's hard to get things done when rare spawns or the like are involved. I think having some of the elements be cross-server is a good option - instance queuing for example.

Just don't be griping when your server lag goes up because the population is a lot higher :D That's an issue some may not have considered, and would be a very important issue to me.

    ;)

Have played: Everquest, Asheron's Call, Horizons, Everquest2, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall

I just see this trend is all. SOE can never do anything right. I am an old EQ player. I have played EQ for like 3 years then I played even EQ 2 and I honestly loved that game and I even was happy when they took Vanguard over because that game would have died if they had not taken it over and they fixed it. Any one who played Vanguard before SOE took it over can tell you how badly that game was doing in terms of performance what with the chunking and crashing but SOE fixed to an extent.

Yes I know they then did not want to pour any more money into it  and stuck it in the station and left it but honestly if not for them I would not have played Vanguard for as long as I did. Yes they make decisions and a lot of them are not what you or I want but this constant bad motives that are attributed to their every action is getting seriously tiresome. I have seen way way worse practices from other companies that hardly get a whimper from people but if SOE did it wow ! It would be another reason to get all over them.

"Ghost town" as a couple refer to it:

Remember that people only move around in the cities if they don't have the amenities in their guild halls.

I wish they would spend time and money developing the better game Vanguard rather than worrying about this one.  What a shame.

Yeah I don't understand the hate people have toward any developer.  As for wishes, I wish they'd punch out a Planetside 2.

I'd be so down for some Planetside 2 action.
