How does GW compare to WOW?

BigxBigx Member Posts: 148

I currently play wow.  With the recent patch adding the so called honor system.  The game just took a huge turn from casual gamer to hardcore gamer.  If your not 60 lvl expect to get camped and killed alot more than before on the pvp servers.  Adding honor and no dis-honor makes it a gank fest. Me and wife are not hardcore at all.  We both have full time jobs and work 45+ hours a week.  The ranking is straight kills nothing more.  Would have been nice kills compared to timed played.

I was wondering how the pvp is?  Does the game have crafting in it?  I was reading that the pvping and lvling is different.  Over all is the game good?

Thanks in advance image

it doesn't.. comparing WoW to Guild Wars is a complete insult to Guild Wars.. it is like comparing Jesica Alba (representing Guild Wars) to a hemmoroid (aka WoW).

WoW is a nice game if you new to the genre,  if you have played many mmorpg's before you will see that wow is nothing different than the others. Its all about to get as fast as possible to max lvl get the epic and start pvp.  1996 UO went open beta with exact the same thing, and with ALOT better systems, example crafting, resurce collecting, skills.

WoW got huge numbers of subscribers beacuse its a blizzard game,  alot of money was putted in to hype this game, and man did they succeded. Everyone fell for it, all bought this game, so did I. Now I and many more has cancelled the account beacuse we are simple bored.

I dont know if GW will be any diffrent, but right now GW has some new stuff that hasnt been done before, like fast lvl up to max lvl and a game that is built for its end game,  other games are built for the lvl time, with no end game at all.

Im sure you will get bored with pvp all day efter you tried all the class at thier max lvl, but here is what GW diffrent than the others,  there is no monthly fee wich means you can take a break as long as you want and then play again without the hassle of recreate your account and put another 15$ in the game. Thats exacty how MANY multiplayer games work,  like Diablo 2, CS, Warcraft 3..  they have a HUGE number of members that comes and goes, and the fact that GW will create expansions pack a few times a year that you can choose to buy or not. and with these facts Im sure this game will last longer than the most online games ever does.

Very VERY true! I as well was one of the ones who got suckered in to buying WoW because of how I liked Warcraft 3 and the Blizzard name. Unfortunately after playing only for a month and seeing how it was in the higher levels, I felt like I've already been down this road with other MMO's I've been in and cancelled such as AO. Now the WoW box just sits under my desk collecting dust and dog hair...There's fifty bucks down the drain, but as they say, "s*** happens".

Guild Wars can't really be compared to WoW because they are two totally different games. If you want a game that does not require a monthly fee, practically lets you play at your on pace at any given time, and has some new things that have not been seen out there before in the gaming world, then go with GW. However, if you want a game that has a little slower leveling, alot more levels to aquire, bigger lands/worlds to actually run or ride to explore, and a little more in-depth crafting, then my suggestion would be to stay with WoW.

    As for specific answers -

The PVP is very good (and this is from someone who doesn't like PVP much), but limited in terms of different areas to fight.

There's no crafting to speak of, no. The game utlizes a "crafter" merchant, who fashions items for you as long as you have the proper ingredients and adequate funding. The closest you can come to crafting here is salvaging ingots, wood, bone (etc) from items, and customizing your weapons with different hilts, pommels, bow strings, etc.

As for if it's good.. varying opinions, like any other game. I enjoy it, and the few friends I've invited to BWE's have enjoyed it. I'm fairly sure every one of them will get it. Three out of four for sure. I suspect a lot of the "this game rules!" crowd is hyping it because it's the trendy thing to like at the moment. That also comprises a fairly good percentage of the "This game sucks!" crowd, the usual anti-trendy people. It'll be a few months before you'll be able to rely on an opinion of the game being unbiased. Once both crowds move on to the next big thing.

Actually, in the last preview, I noticed a bit more to the crafting aspect. There are some crafting materials which you have to 'craft' too. Rare crafting materials can be obtained from NPC's which you have to find, while exploring areas. They require you to bring them certain materials in order for them to craft these rare materials for you. Then you can take these to the crafter in town and get even better equipment made.

It does seem though that you can't be a crafter yourself in that sense. Perhaps that will change as the game progresses, or new races are added.

    The choice is pretty simple...

If your looking for the traditionnal MMORPG, you play WoW...get bored after a few months and buy another hyped MMORPG that is the same as the previous (gamming wise)...and keep repeating this process until you say that you've had enough...

Or you go out and get GW, which is a COOPRPG(a.k.a MMORPG), that is a one time purchase(No monthly fee), with new flavor and dynamics and that you can play at you rythem without being left behind by the others.

I have nothing against WoW, but since Blizzard decided to just use the same receipy as others before them, with nohing really new to the overall game, the game is going to loose face just as fast as any other MMORPG. The proof of that is that many WoW players are already done with the game once they reach lvl60 because the main focus of the game is accomplished...so whats left...crafting...making money...hunt for epic items...I dont think that's enough to keep omeone playing. They will bring out an expansion pack eventually that ill bring back some customers but it will be the same outcome. Blizzard had the chance to take it to the next level and chickenned out in my opnion. NcSoft and ArenaNet took that step and look what they got as an end product...

Great graphics, Good interface, New patching technology, no extreme lag problems, new PVP system, Worldwide Ladder( your playing with everyone in the world on the same server),  even a storyline that you can follow. They will have new chapters to the game that will keep it going. And since the main focus of the game isnt lvls, you dont get bored once you reach the cap.

Many people have mixed feelings about GW since its different, you will always have the flammers and the hypers, if your in the mood to try something new...go for GW...if not...try it anyways image

I never got WoW mainly because my dad refuses to pay monthly for a game, so of course i'm all for Guild Wars.  But ive played WoW many times and i have to agree it really is just the same old thing over again just a little polished and hyped.

Sure it's a good game and i enjoyed playing it for the short time i did and i think thats why i enjoyed it because ive only played it briefly, if i'd played it loads it would of bored my eventually.

When WoW came out my cousins hyped and hyped it and couldn't stop talking about it, but i kept a neutral view of things mainly because ive never played Warcraft 3 (lol NEVER!) so i wasn't to interested in WoW.

So yes go for Guild Wars IMO.

Excellant thanks a ton everyone for all the imput. Helped a ton. Started with uo way back when. Big mistake for me I lasted like 3 hours then threw it a way. Not saying it is a bad game. Just not for me at all. Played ao for like 2 yeard got burnt no real pvp. Then daoc. Loved daoc in the battlegrounds. With frontiers releasing and the new castles setup. Possible to lvl from 1 to 50 in the battlegrounds all pvp. I love it left it cause after the long gring to 50 didnt feel like lvling my gear ::::26::. Been on daoc almost 2.5 years. Then went to wow. I am pvp at heart. Love the confict with players not the computer. Now got to get the wife to go gw to lol ::::40::.
There is only 1 breed right? but you can cross train in other classes? To me 1 breed not that big of a deal. Just the differece in char. Hence like mage/fighter or go fighter/ thief. Something on that ground.
Thanks a ton. Love these forums. Like real people willing to help out. Unlike wow forums.
    Again thanks all ::::20::::::20::::::20::::::20::::::20::::::20::

wow... it sounds like a immature game. or that Blizzard was getting nervous with GW being the ultimate game it is, and tried to improve their pvp. but unstead they just screwed it over even more

    Acutally there are several classes

    Warrior

    Mesmer

    Monk

    Elementalist

    Necromancer

    Ranger

All of the classes can be interchanged, for example, you can have a monk/necro,  going into battle you can take 8 skills with you, you can choose any 8 you have unlocked, (they are unlocked by questing or buying) you could take 2 monk healing skills and 6 necro skills, all are very usefull...

Also I don't know if someone mentioned this to you or not, Pardon if didn't read all the other post in this topic, but you can choose a PvP pre-made char.  These start at lvl 20 (the cap) and cannot go questing but can go into all differnt forms of PvP.  Also have plenty of skills already unlocked at your disposal...

I'll make a quick comparison for you: Guild Wars is a 5 star meal, so good it's like an orgy in your mouth. World of Warcraft is the aftermath of a 5 star meal undergoing a series of digestions, only to result in a painful peanut-crap that shall forever reside at the bottomless pit of sewage we know as the mystical "Pool of Clones". To put it as simply as one of the first posters, yeah, it's like comparing Jessica Alba to a hemmoroid.

It just got worse with wow.  After weekly maintence they did the ranking and it is per week now.  they didnt even install half the ranks.  The officers ranks are not in just nco and below.  Blizz advertised casual gamer wich is a lie now.  They tally the weekly points and assign rank according.  So they say not this week maybe next week.  The power gamer will over take wow now since they have alot more time to farm you while you try and xp to lvl.  Ladder effects system only work on non lvld system.  Everybody the same lvl using the same equipment hence skill is the difference.  Not there it is how long you play and honor?  what is the challenge of a 60 killing a 49 lvl.  Sad thing they the prime targets of 60 cause they get so called honor points.  I am standing there at org near the vender of rank rewards.  I am not even allowed in the club cause I have no ranking.  First for everything now you get rewarded for spending to much time on a game while the guy that works and pays bills just stand there with the disappointment of the game now.  Sad that over half the peeps didnt even get close to a rank i was 48 points a way basiclly 2 kills from taking away anothers guy rank so i get it.  Very sad system.  GW looks and sound awesome I have to say. thansk all for all the input image

If your like me and just want to get into the end game and max lvl fast than get GW. If you like softcore grinding get WoW. If you like hardcore stay up for 2 weeks grinding get Lineage 2. I have tried all of these so far I like GW the best I am not a big pvp person but this game made me one(I played in the beta). For WoW really took me I think like 6-7 days to get to lvl 43 and after that the game was just so boring. I was so certian I wouldnt come back I gave all my gold equipment to friends. WoW was just plain out boring after awhile like all MMORPG games get but wow after a week I was done with. If your a big Star Wars fan get SWG the expansion with ships looks pretty cool. As for me I will get GW no monthly fees, easy to get max lvl, good graphics, good pvp need I say more...

P.S sorry for my english I tried my best image

You're not going to get a non-biased answer here on the "Guild Wars" forums of MMORPG.com, but I will do my best to try.

I've played GW since last October during the weekends that were open. I've played WoW since the early days of closed beta. Both have come a LONG way.

WoW is a great MMO, it takes all the other basic MMO ideas, then completely polishes them. Blizzard is a good, solid company, I really do not see how someone can argue otherwise. Having said that, WoW is more or less "The Same" even though it does everything really well, it has all been done before. I have a 60 Human Rogue on a RP server, and I'm still playing, but finding myself playing my alt which is an orc alot more, due to the fact that there's just not much for you when you hit 60, unless you love grinding for gear. My advice to the OP on WoW is, why did you join a pvp server? In a RP or PvE environment you have the *choice* to pvp when you want, and believe me, there's plenty of it going on.

Guild Wars is also a great game. I do not classify it with other MMOs at all. While it cannot compare to WoW in content or crafting system, it makes up for in "Action" style gameplay, and character customizations. The biggest turn on for me is the fact you can take a Primary/Sub class and be completely different than someone with the same Primary/Sub class but mixing up the 8 skills you use. The PvP I'm having a blast with as well.

You're realling comparing apples to oranges though, as they are two completely different games. While I will continue to play wow, I will also play GW on the side. You can really go in and goof off for a few minutes and have fun. Think of logging into Counter-Stirke and getting your fix in 30 minutes. It's about the same way. You do not have to invest loads of time to it.

PvE in WoW is both pretty good and very crappy at the same time.

There are a lot of quests to do. But here is the problem. Easily 75% of the quests are "Kill X Monsters, or kill Monsters, and get Items". You're like grinding the whole time, though you are "doing quests". Most of the people doesnt give a shit about the others, so I recommend getting a guild, or even making one (Then again, 10g for making a tabard is rediculous (Takes around 20 minutes to get when you're 40 but can take a long while in the begining). Problem with most guilds is that when a majority hits 60, they (As 90% of people hitting 60) just run the in-game instances all the time, and pretty much don't give a shit about the rest. If you play on a PVP (I HIGHLY recommend you DO NOT do so), it's just very bad cause you just keep dying doing quests and all (Gankfest).

Read the forums for infos about GW, and make your mind, but having played FFXI and WoW (Both for many months), I can tell that WoW is just plain bad after a while and most people quit for that reason.
