So when WOW comes up people always talk about how boring the game is and how easy it is. However, not many people recommend a game that is better. I use to be a wow player, started pre-TBC and quit this summer, but I too got bored. I agree with the WoW haters but I am curious what games they are playing that are so much better than WoW.
btw, I do not like EvE. Not that is bad, it is a good game, but it is just not for me.

I think there are too many variables to choose from when comparing MMO's. WoW does some things better than other's and vice versa right? I guess it depends on what you like to do in the genre first, then you can find games that cater to you that way. What do you like to do ingame?
Gutlard Out!
What, me worry?
Well I use to be a hardcore wow gamer and I am looking for a new game that is better and more indepth. However this mysterious game does not seem to exist, even though people talk so down about wow. I am not exactly looking for something that matches my opinion, but the I am curious of the opinions of others, and I will check those games out.
I think they may respond with: LIFE What game are you looking for now?
I agree that WoW gets boring when there is too much time between Xpacs; if you don't get into a good raiding guild there are only so many dailies and instances you can do before you go crosseyed. It is the same with all level based mmo's.
However, I have tried pretty much every major game out there, and I have yet to find one that compares to WoW in usability and fun. The UI is logical and easy to understand, the graphics are not too bad, combat is fun, the economy is fairly well balanced, and finding groups isn't a struggle. Even the web based support is easy to navigate and clear to understand.
Other games may have good stories or better graphics, but until they can match WoWs magic, I will just keep coming back to it.
The only thing that I would say is close to WoW that made me feel good and still keeps me interested is AoC. If you can bite the bullet and understand that WoW has many more years worth of content and stuff than AoC does, you should find AoC enjoyable. It has very good gameplay and if your computer can support it very good graphics.
I have played pretty much everything and the only thing that kept me hooked besides WoW is AoC.

I am not even necessarily looking for something like WoW. I am actually looking for something different, I am assuming that is why people like these other MMOs. If a game is similar to WoW, might as well go ahead and play WoW.
Any game that has proper openworld/pvp/pk
If Im in a raid and I dont like a guy I want to be able to kill him. <-- This makes a great game.
In the fantasy realm, I would try EQ2. It has much of the ease of use features that people like about WoW, but also is much more deep. Play on a well populated server like Antonia Bayle and you'll have a good experience. Only downside, is that on the way to the level cap, you're dependent on soloing as much of the population sits at the endgame.
The reason why I do not talk highly of WoW is because it destroyed all creativity for the industry. WoW is the reason why there are no good games out since WoW's release. That is why I am playing DAOC, by far the funnest pvp I have ever played.

For me it is a mood thing. Is CoX just as repetitive and boring in parts as WoW is? Yes, for the most part. However, I find it more fun to do some of those boring things in CoX. Is EVE just as repetitive and boring in parts as WoW is? Yes, for the most part. However, I find it more to do some of those boring things in EVE. Then there are other boring things, that I simply have more fun doing in WoW.
There is a reason that a lot of people hop subs across several games. They are technically bored with them all (or just to be fair, they love them all but cannot play them at the same time), and they move between them to let that boredom meter slip down some.
Of course it is all very subjective, but in the end I do not believe that it is a case of saying that there is a better game than WoW out there. Much like I would not say there is a better game than CoX or EVE. There are just different games, that in the end of the day all suffer the same underlying issues.
For me, sometimes I want the WHAM! POW! of being a superhero. Sometimes I like the idea of flying a huge spaceship with freaking big guns. Sometimes I just want some meaningless but fun PvP.
I do not play two superhero games. I do not play two space games. Though I did help out the girlfriend while she was playing around in DDO and LOTRO, I do not play two fantasy games.
For me it is a mood thing...games with similar problems...but different.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Explorer: 87%, Killer: 67%, Achiever: 27%, Socializer: 20%
Tbh that really isnt wows fault for making a popular game that people stick with, its the other dev companys that try to recreate wow becasue of the subs they get thats the problem.
What did you want blizzard to do? make a shit game on purpose so people wouldnt copy lol?
Very true, I dont exactly blame WoW for supplying the first mindless mmo to the masses, I more blame the masses for enjoying mindless games.

This would make raiding in WoW fun again. They could even implement it as a voting system the raid leader can initiate... kinda like the ready check pop up...
"XxHuntardxX didn't turn off aggro on his kitteh again... should we wtfpwn him?"
Yes / No
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
DAoC
Now, let me say that I thought your thread was going to be why do I hate WoW. I'll tell ya, because of WoW the devs over at my game (mythicEA) decided they had to dumb down DAoC as to compete with WoW, now I still have great RvR to play, but as far as PVE; they made it so easy a cave man can do it.
When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
Darkfall has a 14-day free trial. There is (I'm obviously guessing) an 80% chance you won't stick with the game for whatever reason. There are lots of Darkfall haters and it's not a "perfect" game, if there is such a thing.
WoW was my first MMO. I liked it because there was a lot to learn and do. I liked leveling alts, as well. But when I (finally, as a very casual gamer) figured out the tricks, I lost interest. Two years was a good run, though.
After my two years of WoW, I played AoC, WAR, Aion, etc. but got bored quickly with all of them.
Darkfall has a steep learning curve. I'm still a casual gamer, so I'm not (nor do I ever expect to be) an elite pvper at all.

The learning curve makes this game interesting for me. There is always something I can do. The world is huge and there's a lot to explore. Try it out. It is very different from WoW.
i don't hate WoW ....i hate how WoW makes me feel.
ADDICTED.
i'v been gone about 5 months now and still havent' found anything quite as.....addicting :P
i'v gone back to AoC, War, Aion. tryed DF, MO, Lotro, DDO, EvE, FE,......and yet nothing quite gives me the shakes like waiting for the arena gates to open, summoning Lokholar in AV, or exiting the tunnel in WSG with the flag in hand, or watching from Lumber mill as the enemy aproches below.....
this is what i hate about WoW, 5 months later i still feel addicted.
While I'm not a WOW hater (don't think I've ever said I hate WOW) I quit playing a bit after TBC I thought LOTRO had similar gameplay but an environment more conducive to rp and a better community (from the people I met) but it really does nothing if you get a pvp jones.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
You know, this is a very good question (So let me answer very honnestly).
The short answer is:
Nothing. There is no better game than WoW because all of them try to emulate it and are as a result same as WoW now days, and you cannot beat WoW in its own couryard. The qualitative critisism expressed (WoW is easy WoW lack depth, WoW is boring and simple), is in comparison to games that predated its Era, such as UO and DAOC, and AC, and EQ, Shadowbane, EvE and of cource SWG (Pre NGE, important to say since NGE is a WoW clone).
So many of those that do not play WoW actually are hanging out in Forums and places like these talking about it, and expressing our frustration about the Industry and every WoW clone that it spits out while waiting the next game that will be alike those earlier games and thus Different than WoW to launch.
The Long answer, reserved for another time

Well Blizzard claims to be working on a so-called "next-gen" MMO. They might announce it at the upcoming blizzcon, but if they were smart, they wouldn't. I can see many companies attempting to go after their next idea in order to beat blizzard to the table.
So for all of you people saying WoW is easy or "mindless", have you ever been ranked #1 in Arena? Have you ever downed 25 man hard mode Lich King? If not, STFU.
I'd recommend Fallen Earth to the OP, if looking for something a bit different but not too radical.

Different strokes for different folks as the saying goes. A lot of people despise WoW because while it isn't a game we like at all it's a good game. I'll explain a bit more. I love a good sandbox, before WoW sandbox and themepark had equal footing in the MMO sector. Neither was really pulling more subs than the other. UO and EQ both pulled in around 250k-300k subs at there respective peaks.
Then comes along WoW. WoW garners millions of subs. Now every game that comes out tries to be the next Mega Hit Themepark. So few sandbox MMO's around and coming out.
It's enough to make one resentful to say the least lol.
Where once there was a possible future filled with variety and limitless opportunities there is now a reality that only see's the WoW-esque themeparks stack a mile high in the recycle bin lol.
As far as what game is better than WoW. Well if you want PvP and Clan based Warfare then DFO is the place for you. If crafting is more your thing, then I'd say Fallen Earth. If you like that Asian Grinder kind of game then hands down Aion or FFXI (Not FFXIV lol). You have that Super Hero Itch, CoX will tide you over for a long while if your looking for something more action packed but don't want something long term then CO might be worth a look.
It all depends on what kind of experience and setting your looking for. WoW has mass appeal but it doesn't cater very well to specific tastes. I mean WoW has PvP, but not many PvP'rs enjoy PvP in WoW. It has something for the pet lover, but it doesn't quite give that UO tamer feel.
There are a lot of games out there depending on your taste. Personally I'm playing GW to kill time until GW2 launches. FFXI I played for 5 years and it's just not in me to go back. UO I played for 10 years, but again just not in me to go back after that long in the world of Sosaria.
WoW is a good game just not for me, but it's just irksome that all these publishers and investors want the next WoW instead of trying to do there own thing and give us ,the players, variety.
I have 2 reasons for not liking WoW personally, first is from experience when i did the trial (wanted to see what the hype was about before i said anything against it) first thing i saw when i loaded into character was mass insults and abuse towards another new player who asked a simple enough question to answer without agro. second reason is multi-MMO not just aimed at WoW, i hate raids as end game content.
Like you i also am not impressed with EvE, did the trial for that and had nothing but agro/grief, wasn't impressed with the control method (i was hoping for a freelancer/elite style game and got a point and click game instead). not for me thanks.
playing now hmmm.. recently quit SWG after playing since june/july 2005, no other MMO's have taken my interest (that i haven't played in the past) so i'm basically playing FPS games and single player games at present until SW:TOR comes out..
