Ganking and QQ in Darkfall

xBludxxBludx Member Posts: 376

Today I was riding in Orklands on the way to finish a title quest killing some windlords. I see a red ork riding up next to me and I recognize his name from RA chat and I know he's been playing for a while. I square up my mount and get off. By the time I'm off my mount, I'm already at half health and debuffed, etc.  So I just stand there.

I was just not ready to put up a fight. I realize that that's how you learn to pvp better in this game, but sometimes, you're just not mentally prepared and it's just easier to eat the gank, regear and go about your business. I wasn't worried about losing anything. Had a decent R50 axe which is pretty good for me and some regs, but that's about it.

But other player realizes I'm not fighting and just gets on his mount and rides on his way. Actually, I felt sorry about not being able to put up a fight. It would be perfectly legit if he just killed me and took the regs, mount, whatever. But he was cool enough to just move on. He was just looking for a fun fight. I didn't give him that, so he bailed.

This is the second time this has happened. I don't think I've ever been ganked or griefed to a point where I ever felt like it was "wrong" or that it made me not want to play. I have been killed and been discouraged about my character's development, but that is another issue.

Darkfall is a game where once you enter the arena, you agree to certain rules. The main rule is that this is ffa pvp. I don't believe there is an issue with the community being a bunch of sociopathic pks (there there are a few of them - they are a small minority from my experience). I have had many more positive experiences with players that have killed me. If I sent them a tell and asked how I could have improved or whatever. Usually, they give advice or tell me where a good mob spawn is or something like that. Sometimes they give gear or mounts. Sometimes they don't respond. It's rare, but that's their right.

Darkfall is like playing American football or rugby. Once you suit up and step onto the field, you can expect to get tackled. I can't see any reason why people exaggerate the so-called "gankfest" as a reason not to play this game. It's like crying about getting tackled in football or rugby.

If you play, you will get ganked. You may well get frustrated or irritated. But that's about you, not the other guy.

My experience is close to yours. I was ganked, but not that often, and usually the gankers were friendly, no griefing. However, others really do get waylaid repeatedly. I don't know what they're doing differently, but it's got to be frustrating.

For instance, I was a mahirim and was around the starting cities working on trolls. In local chat, someone kept complaining about repeatedly getting ganked by the same group of PKers. People would give him advice on other places to go to harvest or tactics he could use to stay alive, but he apparently kept getting pummeled. He was clearly getting frustrated until a group of people rode out to deal with the griefers.

So while I think the amount of griefing is exaggerated, some people are really unlucky and become the whipping boy of a group of asshats. Or they choose Alfar or Human which are apparently PKer all-you-can-gank buffets.

It's the typical Kill Or Be Killed. Although the user probably doesn't like to kill new players, which is why he let you live and left. Which is not a bad thing, it's just that there's no way in DarkFall to tell if the person is new or not until you hit them.

I've seen some PKers ressurecting players once they realized it's a newb, or kill the player (for the alignement) but not steal any loot. I think most players understand that ganking new players relentlessly won't help the game, and from what I noticed and what other players have said, dry looting new players doesn't seem as common as it used to be. Although there is one Alfar who likes to steal pants....but that's a different story :P

That's funny. Gotta like the personal style there. Wasn't there a guild in AoC that did that?

I think your experince is the exeption, the population is low due to the "we have nothing to do so lets gank noobs" theory. Giving you the bennie of the doubt, even  a small number of new players can cause such...low pops not to mention the 3 month players who have been ganked countless times. It is like telling the new player, come play and get ganked for a few months then after you learn how to play you will be ganked less during quests and other activities. If the experinced players had something to do, like, oh...fight each other, the lower experienced players would have time to...get  experienced. Really, you do not need to get ganked a thousand times to learn good pvp.

Don't forget every race gets a quest to kill 3 none allied race. The easiest way to get this quest done is go hit their noob spawn area. I am aware this isn't all the ganking that goes on. I have been in clans that for whatever reason find themselves without a city or ally that has cities and we try to live in chaos cities. This is by far the most difficult life in Darkfall. You want to cry about getting ganked in the noob zones you haven't experienced the tip of ganking untill you have been bind camped for hours or days. The point is you work through it or around it. Giving up means they win. Remember they can take your stuff but they can't take your skills or personal stats and your getting skill ups every time the attack and kill you!!!
