I am greatly looking forward to this game, but I am finding I am perhaps less of a fan boi then I thought. I noticed how excited fans get on the official forums on a Friday when they release something about the stories timeline. I for one could care less. The only thing I care about is how the game plays, what are it's limitations, and what are its strengths. I dont care if there are non-human choices, whether it is 200 years in front of or 500 years before the movies, what the name of the next planet is, or whether Revan was secretly cheating on his wife after she was knocked up by her neighbor. I just want game play to see the beautiful world we will be playing in for months and hopefully years to come. If there are fun classes with a lot of options, do I care that I don't get to play a wookie? No. I just want a fun game with a good story whatever that story will be. Does that make me less of a fan?

Not necessarily, I think you're just more interested in the game -- seeing the game and knowing what it will be like-- then reading or watching a video based on a timeline in which *you* will not be able to participate in.
I'm more interested to learn about whats happening with my character RIGHT NOW, what MY character will be able to do and impact rather then hear the back story for the entire timeline. I'd much rather hear about that in-game when it actually concerns me, then outside the game while I'm waiting to get in the game.
... uhmm... ya I think that makes sense...
Yes. Yes it does.
Of course not. I feel the same way tbh. Screw the story, make it fun to play.
Given that BioWare's reputation is all about delivering deeply story-driven RPG's, I doubt this game will be for you in that case.
This, it would be like disliking apples then eating an apple and complaining about how you dislike it.

Well, every update is not directed towards you. I happen to enjoy the friday updates, particularly the Timeline videos. I loved this past Fridays Exar Kun video.
If we don't seeing lots of gameplay in about 2 months, it's something we should be concerned about.
I love the timeline videos they are cool. Also im liked the comic they had to bad its finished. Hopefully they give us another comic run. While i want more info on gamply and crafting i like the other stuff also.
Oh www.darthhater.com has a nice interview up its probably old and i just found it lol with a game designer whos on the character creation side of things with maps and stuff and has some nice stuff in it. Especially on group play.
Fun gameplay > Story. If I'm having FUN, I don't need a good story. If the game sucks, the story means nothing. ME, ME 2 and DA:O all had GOOD stories AND good gameplay. Bioware's reputation, IMO, has been to deliver both.
No way. I am of a similar position. While I think the story needs to be good to have a fun and enjoyable game experience, I don;t go read, or care that much, about all the backstory and such on the website. That does not make me less interested in the game.
rabid fans might of Star Wars might hang on every piece of lore and comment on whether it is accurate or not but fans of the game and of bioware might not care as much about that stuff.
So you just wanna have fun playing, it makes sense to me
Everyone has got his preferences I guess.
Gameplay is what interests me the most as well and generally information about the game of course.
Although I enjoy timeline videos for example (I find them very well made) and the comic, I do not enjoy them in a way that would get me more excited about the actual game; I find them enjoyable in the way that I would find it nice to read a good comicbook or watch an enjoyable clip on youtube.
But I do think the timelines in particular will be interesting for potential players browsing the official site post-launch to get some idea of the setting the game is set in and to set the right atmosphere.

Stories timeline is nice, but as a sidenote, I find myself looking forward more to other stuff that's being released, like the Planets or gameplay mechanics, I usually keep track of the timeline updates to find clues for future revelations.

Gameplay and the story IN THE GAME both matter.
Updates on background don't actually say anything about what story gameplay will be like, however, so they aren't very useful in evaluating the game. They don't give you information on what sort of chocies you'll make or the consequences they will have. That said, I think we have a decent grasp of how this will work overall, though more updates on it wouldn't be bad.
We really are lacking much of any talk about game mechanics though. Don't have as much info as many would like on group dynamics for people to generally agree on how they will work (see, I is diplomatic). We don't know much about how talents will work. They haven't shown a lot of detail on what gear will be like. We don't know much about high-end force powers. We don't know much about the end-game. There are huge areas of non-story gameplay and we at best can make some reasonable inferences for some of them and at worst have very little idea for others.
Given that, I think it is perfectly sensible to unexcited when they reveal a 14th world (or whatever) or another comic. There's a lot of worlds...I GET IT. You have a nice comic -- I like comics, so ok. I'd rather have more details about how the game will play.
I just want to clarify that it is VERY IMPORTANT to me that the game have a good story...especially since that affects replayability. I just don't care what that will be in small tiny pieces each Friday along with all this other back stuff. I just want to see more game play, mechanics, crafting, side things to do, PVP and graphics/ animation improvements now. Show the game twice a month so we can see how it is progressing. People want to see videos that aren't cut scenes. These little bits and pieces of the story can wait until I am playing the game. Maybe I'm getting too impatient because Guild Wars 2 has shown so much more of the game play to date.

They need to appeal to the mass MMO market in some ways to stay competitive, so I assume game mechnaics will be just as fun since lots of gamers like to skip story elemements. But then again there is that crowd of gamers who want better story offerings, or gamers who don't know that story is actually fun and might end up liking it. In that case it will offer more, and I imagine they will cater to both skippers and lore hounds. Skip it if you don't care, sit and watch the scenes if you like.
Looko i want a fun and enjoyable game also. That said id ont think go everywhere do anything u want space constitutes fun. It wouldnt be for me if i wanted that kind of game id go play eve.
I just like the other stuff on fan friday also. Lets face it they are given us some nice lore some planets some races. Little things. They are doing so at there own pace ala blizzard.
I will say the one thing i find to be a positive. Ive seen 2-3 interviews where the actual game designers state. The game is prety much finished. Meaning they have all the mechanics and stuff in game now its all about fixing bugs and polishing the game.
they also state bioware is all about having a polished game at launch. I think they are gonna go about this the right way. Make sure the game runs as glitch free and as smoothly as they can make it.
I wanna know more about crafting and all the races that will be in game and for what class. I want that as much as the next guy but i also love the timeline and the other stuff. but them im a huge star wars fan. I even liked the prequel. except 2 that one sucked
I read all there books and so maybe thats why i like the time line stuff. But when devs are sayign we have all the mechanics and stuff pretty much done now its just about polish and u have at least 6 months till release that bodes will for this game.
It means the devs care about the quality and arent gonna rush this game to market games that have alot of issues at launch have them because they rush. Looks like bioware is gonna do this the right way.
Really?
No one is interesting in backstory? No one is actually interested in the world they are going to be inhabiting for months on end?
You guys sound like a bunch of Modern Warfare players.
If the game is story-based and that backstory isn't in the game, then that's a tremendous failure on Bioware's part. Again, backstory like that doesn't actually tell you much of anything about the game at all. Backstory seems like fluff releases to avoid releasing anything on game mechancis themselves.
I'd rather learn the backstory in the game, and more about the game mechanics before I play.
Why would I care about a backstory for a GAME I haven't even played yet?
You seem to take this game far too seriously mate.
While I also like the planetary vids and the Gnost Dural stories, yes indeed. I too want more gameplay now and not another plethora of who is who and who did what asf. as you say. I'd prefer to experience these details in the game rather.

I...I...
You guys do know the RPG in MMORPG stands for role-playing game right? I'm literally flabbergasted right now.
I don't understand you people at all..
I would like to see more game play as well. It is what many want because it is the fear of the unknown. Many want the game to be exactly what is in their mind. But atthe same time, I want to know that the story will be a well designed story. So I also enjoy the time line videos.
I have to say that a video I watched yesterday makes me feel like they will be able to do both. It was from the sith inquisitor and a starter quest. From the same ruins that we saw in the PAX demo. It showed the seamless movement into an instance. Smooth transition from VO dialogue to combat. Very well done VO acting and a heroic fight of you verse 4 other initiates that need to kill you to have a second chance to become a Sith. It make me feel better about the way the game will work well. Having both story and game play. But it is still just testing and not an official release. So I do hope we start getting official game play soon. But I don't expect it till after Cata releases.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?

RPG means different things to different people just like the other half of the term MMO. Some people think MMO means thousands of individuals running around a virtual world, accomplishing thousands of individual goals. Others view MMO to mean, a large number of groups or teams running around a virtual world trying to accomplish a common goal. Both interpretations are correct, but we the players have to depend on the devs to put in the tools we desire to support each style of play.
For some of us, RPG means a whole lot more than the devs writing a bunch of backstories for us to read. In some RPGs, the devs give the player a little slice of backstory and a bunch of tools to allow the player to then role-play and write their own little variation of the story. Bioware seems to be going down the other path of giving the player backstory and dragging the player along a guided path with little room or freedom for the individual to impact the story. Both methods work, but you can't expect everyone to praise them or agree that one is better than the other.
I agree that gameplay is a big factor, but hell its star wars... There is a LOT of history behind this IP and thusly bioware has a lot of work to do to keep it in check.
Star Wars is an epic story that i'm looking forward to being engaged in.
Can't we have both?
If your only in it for the gameplay you will be sorely disapointed, because from many things iv seen, and many others seen, the gameplay is your average mmo rehash.
