I don't have cable. I just have an HD antenna and Netlfix and I use Hulu and South Park Studios for the rest. Nine dollars a month for TV isn't too shabby.
All OLED, LCD, and Plasma TVs in the US will drop in price significantly forever, after Black Friday.
If you're from Canada (like in your profile) it might be worth it to hold out till then too. I don't know if you're overstocked, but the US is majorly overstocked on TVs nationwide atm.
Many people have considered dropping the cable, and just going with airwaves and internet.
But the vast majority don't.
Why?
Study says it's reality shows, and sports. They don't want to miss their favorite football game, or dancing with the stars, or whatever.
That's assuming you're into that sort of thing. I for one am not into reality shows or sports for that matter. I think in the last week I've turned the tv on for all of maybe 2 hours. The thing is I'm not paying for the cable, other people are so it's of no consequence to me. If I was paying for it I'd drop it in a second.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
Are there still any american TV brands or is it just japanese and korean these days?
There's a few off brand cheap crap ones. But yeah, it's mostly Japanese. The best brands here are Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic. Then there's LG, which is Korean but I don't trust them anymore after I bought a few terrible products, then there's Vizio, which is a crap US brand. I think Emerson is American, but Made in China, but those are crap too.
As for the Cable and what not. I hardly watch TV, but I get all the channels and in HD for like $50-60 a month, because I split the satellite bill with my dad. (We live about 30mi from each other. Ahhh, gotta love satellite) If I do turn on the TV, it's stuff I've already recorded. I don't watch sports and I only watch 2 Reality Shows that I don't really care if I miss or not. The Colony and Pawn Stars, but I recently found out that Pawn Stars is actually done in a studio and the show has become obviously scripted in the last few episodes.
Other than that stuff above, the only thing I watch are random movies on the premium channels or my cartoons. (American Dad, Futurama, South Park, Family Guy, Squidbillies, etc. etc. etc.)
I really never watched TV since my gaming addiction as a teen back in the mid 80's
I watch a hell of a lot of movies though and sports. Even that I sort of drifted away from as I got older and nearly all the movies I saw were at the theater.
This past year I decided to upgrade TV's to a 55 inch Samsung 120hz LED and I gotta say, ive been watching a LOT more TV then I used to. I never would walk away from the PC and just channel surf but I do that now. I figured the polk audio and denon surround sound system we have needed a bigger screen, and the blu-ray player we got for x-mas was just being wasted on our old 780p television.
Right before football season started we got a sweet deal with Direct TV and got rid of our old cable provider. Basically they were giving away their top end package with all movie channels for 5 months for free if you ordered the NFL Sunday Ticket (huge football fan). So, what it came down to is getting the NFL Sunday ticket for free because it takes 5 months to pay it off and the way it was broken out the top end package was the difference of purchasing sunday ticket.
I cant believe how much better satellite is over the old cable. The HD is much better (ppv movies up to 1080p), I have more HD channels then I did with cable and the sound is also much better. It took them roughly an hour to install the dish and hook up our two HD tevelivision. I kept my cable internet of course, but if any of you have the option of going satellite like Direct TV or your cable.. dont think twice and get direct tv. Theres way too many benefits of it over standard cable.
so between netflix streaming, all the movie channels I have and my new addiction to blu-ray movies I've become a home-theater-aholic
Agree Dirct TV is better than cable. I love the surfing options as well, to be able to pull up info on what i'm watching at any moment. With a touch of a button, I can see the title, the director, the actors, etc.

Gotta love the free streaming HD-DVR to any computer on the network too.

Someone told me they were not going to broadcast non-digital signals anymore in Quebec. What are my options for a TV signal?
-cable, satelite, something else?
