Hi-Rez making a true MMO shooter in "Tribes Universe"

in text, they make it sound like Planetside 2....and I cant freakin wait!

from Hi-Rez boards:

Here is a brief update on what’s been happening at HiRez Studios.

Those of you that have been playing Global Agenda know that over the last year we have been consistently adding new features/content and releasing it at no charge to the Global Agenda community. We plan to continue doing this on an on-going basis as much as possible and over the next couple of months everyone will see new maps, raids, flair, and weapons (starting with the Halloween event next week).

As most of you know, Global Agenda is an ambitious project that incorporates many different gameplay modes (PvP, PvE, AvA, Raids, Open Zone, DA). Over time we had many requests for additional game play modes, especially larger spaces and fights. Earlier this year we released the Sonoran Desert quest zone as an area that would help players ease into the game while testing our technology limits for having large areas and many players in the same zone. Our plan for a first paid expansion was to continue on that path with Warzones which were designed as large open areas where players can PvP.

As we worked on Warzones we found too many design and programming issues to make it practical. Global Agenda was designed around 10v10 team play and there was no practical path found to scale it up in a significant way (to large scale numbers like 100 players in a single area). As a result we plan to continue releasing more Global Agenda content but only in the formats players are already familiar with. (Special Ops, Raids, Merc Missions, etc)

While we know that some players will be disappointed in the lack of warzones, we also have some good news.

We can’t transform Global Agenda to a large scale battle format but since we liked this concept a lot, we decided to create a new game based on large scale fighting. In order to develop the new game many significant steps had to be taken, including: A significant rewrite to the unreal engine servers to allow for 100+ players to be fighting in the same map, a new UI system that is more efficient, a different implementation of character visuals, a new terrain system, etc. In addition the combat gameplay required many significant changes as well.

While working through the design we kept coming back to one old and loved game that represented many of the concepts we where incorporating into the new game (Jetpacks, vehicles, large open space, three armor types, futuristic weapons, etc). Many of you will know this game as Tribes, the original on-line multiplayer shooter. As of now, HiRez Studios is the proud new owner of the Tribes franchise.

We now have two groups in the studio, one working on continuing to build Global Agenda and a new group working on the Tribes Universe project. We are also moving to a new larger office space in another month that will help us accommodate our growth.

I’m sure many of you have questions, so here are a few quick highlights for Tribes Universe:

* Three Tribes (factions)

* Full clan (agency) support

* First person view (third person for some vehicles)

* Full vehicle support (ground and air)

* Full persistent world with territory control (no instances)

* PvP focused

* Huge outdoor maps (about 10x the area of sonoran desert)

* Large scale fights (100+ players)

* Jetpacks, skiing, lots of weapons, etc

Alpha testing will begin at the start of the year (about 3 months from now) and Global Agenda players with level 50 characters will have priority in entering Alpha and Beta testing

Thanks for your support

Erez.

P.S. More information on Tribes Universe will be coming in the near future along with an Alpha/Beta registration web site."

Now that's more like it! I Look forward to seeing the outcome of this. It's been far too long for the next gen MMO FPS to show up. I hope it's going to be full on dx11 and fully Nvidia 3D ready.

Could someone with more experience with massive FPS games tell me how snipers don't ruin it? (while still allowing snipers)

Seems like in a 30 vs 30 game, you have a very limited number of snipers.  Get a 100 vs. 100 game going, and 30 odd snipers on one side would be a massive problem.

I think you should be happy its a dev with some fps experiance that has a good online game under their belt. Take this into account. Hi-Rez was able to get the franchise...that means either they made more money on Global Agenda than I thought or the former rights holder did not give a crap about the ip and simply wanted to get rid of it, so it could have ended in some really bad hands.

OMG!!!!!! Are you freaking serious!?? LOL I just pissed in my pant! A Tribe Universe!!? WOHOOOOO!

Ok back to normal...Wow, this is awesome. I've always wanted a Tribes Universe. I remembered someone made a mod with a very big map once. Had objective and all but didn't catch on with the community. I sure will be keeping my eyes on this one. Tribes 2 was my first online addiction game ever. So much memories and so many friends.

You may be thinking in terms of more traditional FPS, Counter Strike, BF2, even Global Agenda. Yes, on a small map that many would be a problem. But in a large world map with fast modes of transportation, it becomes very easy to flank or circle around snipers.

A good example is Planet Side (the only true open world FPSMMO). That game had snipers and they werent a problem, nothing like awp-whores. Mainly because they couldnt do a 1 shot kill. They were more about stand-off range. Hitting from where you couldnt hit back. Course not sure how they changed after the BFR expansion.

God, I miss the early days of PS.

In Planetside snipers were pretty worthless.  The best snipers barely achieved the rate of killing of an average player.  Most were extremely bad at moving forward to help gain ground after killing some targets.

They fell under the same category as the Galaxy shuttles: playstyles that players thought were useful, but in actual practice were incredibly inefficient at capturing bases.  Who wants a bunch of useless snipers or dropship infantry when you could mass a ton of air vehicles and have some genuine hitting power before you hotdropped?

Or well...I suppose the one-word answer is "vehicles".

You'd think this would be a good rule of thumb, yet consider:

    • Lineage was NCsoft's first MMO

    • RuneScape was Jagex's first MMO

    • Dofus was Ankama's first MMO

    • Final Fantasy XI was Square Enix's first MMO

    • EVE was CCP's first MMO

    • World of WarCraft was Blizzard's first MMO

That's 6 of the 10 most-subscribed MMOs, as of March, the four others being Lineage II, Lord of the Rings Online, Age of Conan, and Warhammer Online.

Why can't they get someone good to make it? This will flop.

If they could dig up the original design team and tap them as advisors, this could be great. I loved tribes and I still play Tribes two and the open source game Legends. If they do bring the franchise back to servers with 100+ players then this will be freaking awesome.

As for the sniper thing, they really weren't that useful on their own in Tribes. Generally, snipers would either double as flag runners or work with a heavy to "paint" turrets for mortar hits. When I played a sniper loadout, I spent more time trying to take out the other teams exposed equipment than actually racking up kills. In fact, just trying to rack up kills is a good way to lose a game since it keeps the entire opposing team in their base and more able to repair and defend.

the most valuable players were the guyes that repaired equipment and piloted vehicles. Sneak two heavies with heal packs and sheilds into the enemy base and hilarity ensues.

Ahh, thanks for the info (and thanks to the other person too).

well if it's open world and persistent like they say looks promising.

The video doesn't really go into to much detail on that aspect, you can do co-op missions but what can happen in the open world among players. open pvp and such.

So pretty much they were going to give it to global agenda for free, but now they are going to charge all of us for it.

I see what Hi-Rez did there...

GA was going to get paid expanions. With warzones and such 50v50, more open PvE zones. But it would require too much work to transform GA that they couldn't do it and so they bought Tribes Franchise and are going to make a Tribes mmo.

GA will still receive content updates. Even if they would've changed GA it wouldn't have been for free, but a paid expansion. Now stop being so fucking paranoid. GA and Tribes will both be different games each it's own style and each it's own group of people working on it and pushing out content.

So no you didn't see what hirez did there.

    nom nom nom

this is awesome news.  global agenda is a really great game and i like HiRez as a company.  i guess they're really racking in the $$$ from GA.  i just hope they don't have healers in the new game....the GA healers were OPed IMHO.

Firefall is going to be free to play so there's no reason why I can't play both.

I am not paranoid, I am just saying that Hi-Rez is finding more ways to possible get money from us. I am not even saying that they do not deserve it. This game could be worth even a subscription, which they have not annouced whether or not they well have one or not.

Well of course they are trying to make money. Intentionally trying to be unsuccessful at make a profit would be kinda stupid ya think?

If Hi-Rez wants to corner the shooter mmo market its fine by me, I don't know a dev team that has tried so hard to do so and I applaud them for that. They know what their community wants and genuinely try to deliver it. Tribes Universe? Yes please! Who knows, they may even make a MMOFPSRPG game like Neocron later on in the future that I'd love.

  • xuitonxuiton Member Posts: 133

I for one am pleased by this. I never really played GA besides the demo but this company seems to listen to his fans/player base and at least attempted to have large scale warfare.

They originally planned for a subcription fee, but decided not and still release content updates.

Its worth a try as currently the MMOFPS market is dead.

  • IvanTheFoolIvanTheFool Member Posts: 75

Yeah, nice of HiRez to ditch a feature they were promising the GA game would get and instead put it into a new game.  They do not seem to understand the difference between a paid expansion and a whole different game.

"You were already going to pay to get the expansion featuring Warzones. What's the difference, really?" HiRezDuke supports this statement.

    http://forum.globalagendagame.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=231&t=27773&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=10

Guess they don't understand splitting the playerbase and putting focus on two games instead of one is different than having one team create content for an existing game and working to increase its playerbase.

I am surprised by the GA players who think this is a good move and will mean anything but bad things for the future of Global Agenda.

  • xuitonxuiton Member Posts: 133

Why not give Hirez the benefit of the doubt when they said they actually tried to implement it.

Besides what would you rather have? tribes universe or GA with 50v50 warefare.

I can't wait.  Man Tribes 2 was some epic fun.  I have faith in these guys doing Tribes justice and am really excited about this.

  • FdzzaiglFdzzaigl Member UncommonPosts: 2,433

Tribes 2 was epic, but I hope they do this right...

And what I really hope they will do, is to ditch the damn skill / level progression.

I'm fine with that in an RPG, but its just bothersome in an FPS and it creates divisions between people that really shouldn't be there.

Some gear progression is acceptable for me, but I'd rather have it limited to a minimum.

People won't continue to pay a subcription in an MMO if there is no progression.

You could see progression based on territory, resources, ranking and so forth. But yeah most people are only interested in character sheet progression.
