Trion Worlds featured a panel on their upcoming games Rift: Planes of Telara and End of Nations at this year's New York ComicCon and MMORPG.com's Drew Wood was on hand to get all the details.
The good people at Trion and Rick Sanchez were kind enough to come out to New York Comic Con for us and hit us up with a panel on their upcoming, highly-anticipated game, Rift: Planes of Telara, and a brief taste (if too little) of End of Nations, their as of yet no-release-date-provided MMORTS. Rick focused predominantly on Rift, and you can't blame him, as all of the enthusiasm in the room seemed to be for the forthcoming fantasy MMORPG.
Rick equated Rift right away to its brethren of the genre (WoW, Everquest) telling us that at its heart, Rift is an achievement-based MMO and a title that is intended to appeal to fans of its predecessors. He quickly listed off a grocery list of gameplay features, from crafting to guild raids, guild achievements, PvP, auctions, factions and Guild Quests, and promised an abundance of content that will keep you playing well until an expansion comes along. He then went on to claim that any MMO elements you've ever wanted in a game are going to be present in Rift: “Pick your little slice of MMO heaven and we're going to give it to you”.

My MMO heaven involves non-instanced housing, encouraged grouping and raiding at all levels, and a real player driven economy. I hope they can deliver
A correction to the bit about slotting souls...
You CANNOT mix souls of different callings.
If your primary Calling is Warrior, you cannot slot a Rogue soul, Mage soul, or Cleric soul. You can only slot other Warrior souls. That doesn't mean there won't be a Warrior soul that will provide a ranged attack, a bit of healing, etc... Just that you can't do "cross-calling" soul set-up.s

When I was in San Francisco visiting Trion to check out the game I got the idea you could indeed mix callings. Has something changed along these lines within the last two months or so?
You've never been able to do cross calling souls... I've been watching this game very closely even back when it was still called "Heroes of Telara" and as much I had wished it was possible, they are not allowing you to equip souls from other callings. I'd kill to play a paladin, saboteur, warden myself (Excellent solo class IMO) but they've never actually talked about letting that happen.
Is this what you were referring to? They seem to be mixing 3 different classes.

I was also under the impression that you could only equip souls within your calling. However, those souls will be diverse enough that you could have a warrior with minor healing or a ranged attack. This issue seems to be confusing everyone and Trion would be wise to reword things to end the confusion, if they can at this point.
Sorry for the late reply, but...
They've been saying there would not be cross-calling Soul attunement as far back as I can remember. I've been following since R:PoT was HoT, and I don't ever recall them specifically saying you could have a warrior/mage/cleric mix, or anything of that nature.
My guess is that you were shown a mix of souls that have different playstyles, but still from the same calling, and that is where the confusion came in.
No big deal, I just wanted to make sure you were aware of it so you could update your article. Wouldn't want people thinking they can make a full-healing / tanking / burst DPS class mix.

Howeverrrr, you can certainly do a full-Chloromancer/partial-Archon/bit-Elementalist though! That might be one of the better setups for a mage that wants to heal and tank, or as close as they can get to that.
I'm seeing Warriors that can heal and (obviously ) DPS, Clerics that can tank and DPS, Rogues that can tank and maybe heal, and Mages that can heal and maybe DPS. That's pretty cool.
I have a feeling i will find a good home in this game.
Very intresting indeed the mix souls thingie. Would love to play a ranger style charcter, that apart ranged attacks he could defend himself in melee as well,or a battlemage
