RIP Paul

Yes, that sagacious octopus, Paul, who correctly predicted the outcome of every World Cup Soccer match on which it guessed, has passed on.  He died at the ripe old age of two and a half.  Unfortunately he didn't live long enough to take advantage of his fame and cash in on all the lucrative endorsements he no doubt would have received had he lived longer.

No word yet on whether or not he's going to be converted into calamari.

2.5 years for octopus longevity ,not sure about that...They need to do a toxicology, there were alot of death threats if you remember .

edit* keep in mind here we are talking about soccer fans,a vial of cyanide dropped in his tank is not beyond reason given past experiences.

With some brief research I found out that 2.5 years is about average for an octopus.  The giant North Atlantic Octopus may live as longas 5 years under ideal circumstances however most octopus species die after mating though it is not of starvation but due to genetic programing that makes some glands secrete chemicals which result in death.

For all I know Paul lived a pretty good life, assuming of course Scubie isn't onto something with his cyanide theory.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Yeah I looked and couldnt find a life expectancy. The species is common octopus.Seems very short as how advanced as they are for an marine animal doesnt it.

More importantly, you gotta see how many offspring they produce per mating session (usually one mating session due to their kill-gene as mentioned above).

Wiki:   After they have been fertilized, the female lays about 200,000 eggs (this figure dramatically varies between families, genera, species and also individuals).
